Project Overworld

Chapter 12 - The lurking war

Sound of metal being cut kept ringing inside Keith's base.

He was constructing a sturdy workbench containing all the necessary tools for crafting.

With the space he dug up the day before, he could make a steady production line.

After thinking about it the day before, he now wanted to optimize and automatize the different crafting processes.

Currently, he was making an iron tank where metal would be kept molten during his crafting. With a small trap on the side, he would then let the molten metal flow onto his workbench at the d.e.s.i.r.ed pace.

In the process of optimizing his crafting speed, he also planned to make a few more workbench connected on to the other.

Overall, this installation would reduce the unnecessary movements by a lot, allowing him to focus on the crafting in itself and improving the total production rate by several folds.

After working for more than ten hours straight, Keith finally took a breath and admired the fruits of his labor.

'Now that I think about it, my base is looking more and more like a steel fortress... Except nothing is made out of steel.'

Iron could be seen everywhere he laid his gaze upon. It wasn't particularly sturdy, but it was sufficient for the uses he made his tools and structures for, aside from the metal cutting saw that he needed to replace every now and then and his drill that couldn't last for long before showing signs of degradation.

Hence, Keith's had the idea of creating metal alloys such as steel or bronze. Every alloy had its uses, from sturdiness to elasticity and lightness.

Furthermore, he needed alloy to optimize electricity distribution and to craft advanced electronic parts. Only, the latter was not something he could dream of for now.

He already had troubles designing workbenches and simpler versions of tools like saws and drills.

However, he would not give up for such a matter. After all, his goal was beyond what humanity was capable of for now.

Until now, Keith read online doc.u.mentation to have a global understanding on how things worked. His college physics knowledge even helped him in designing his generator.

However, it wasn't sufficient for what he wanted to do because online doc.u.mentation for electronics was such a headache to read.

Thus, he had to think by himself and resolve problems by his understanding alone.

Fortunately, the game was simpler than reality.

Provided the fact that one understood what he was making, he could be successful in everything he crafted.

There was no such things as small details that would prevent an entire contration from functionning properly.

Though, that was not the only reason why the game was easier than reality.

First, there was the inventory, accelerating the pace at which one could transport and collect resources.

Additionally, every action was sped up to the point that doing anything except than crafting would take less than three folds the time it would take in reality; as well as the fact that players would not feel any sort of exhaustion other than the food and water required by a player's avatar.

Finally, the Earth they appeared on was only divided between a few thousands people, so one would not lack any resources of some sort.

Of course, a player's knowledge of their original world helped the most in their development rate.

Nonetheless, Keith finished his various workshops during the next two days.

In the meantime, he also finished the New Dawn's order of rifles and ammunition and was going to deliver it to them directly, according to the agreement he made with Amber.

By doing so, Keith got to catch a glance at their preparations for war.

'They did a great job.' Keith thought while looking at the stone walls the New Dawn's members built with manufactured stones. It was approximately three meters high and several hundred meters wide. It totally blocked off the path between two mountain ranges, preventing a large army from invading their territory.

Enemies could climb the mountain easily, but it would be hard for an army to maneuver between the landscape, slowing down significantly their overall.

After Keith gave the firearms he crafted to a New Dawn's member, he followed Amber as she was taking him around the base.

She showed him every building as if he was a new guild member and he was a bit surprised.

They managed to build a lot during the first few weeks since the beginning of the server.

Of course, everything was made out of wood and stone, but they built a few dozen dormitories, a town center and they dug up some space dedicated to farming.

Amber then led him in front of the guild's manager, Alan. Keith heard of him in the past, but he never got to meet him personally.

He looked like a man in his late thirties, taller than the average and well muscled.

Of course, a player's avatar was entirely created by oneself, but the height was not recommended to be modified as it could cause cognitive problems to control one's avatar.

After reciprocated greetings between the two men, Keith intended to go back to his base.

Unfortunately, just as he was going through the entrance of the building, a man rushed in exclaiming : "They are coming, captain, and they are over three hundred!".

At this moment, it seemed like the lurking war was finally about to break up.
