Project Overworld

Chapter 23 - Promised land

Each day, when connecting to Project Overworld, Keith was greeted with a vast and deep blue ocean.

He usually began his game session by checking every nook and cranny of the boat, making sure nothing was damaged, before going to the stern of the ship to admire the view.

He stayed there for at least an hour, listening to the sound of waves on the hull.

Afterwards, he habitually went and checked the direction the ship was following by looking at the position sensor. After making sure everything was perfect, he spent the rest of the day by building various computer parts.

It has been over a week since he stepped away from the continent, and this has been his typical daily routine.

Although the trip was long, it was not an inconvenience to Keith. He loved seeing how his creations worked as intended.

He was notably amazed by seeing his ship, which he has been working for weeks, floating at an unbelievable speed on the ocean.

However, what left him awestruck was the fact that it was fully automatized. Since he started developing electronical parts, his efficient time inside the game was skyrocketing and his boat had been traveling hundreds of miles while he was away.

For him, who could not play all day long, it was a lifesaving concept. It would have taken weeks, even months to travel the same distance on water if the ship was not forwarding all the time.

Though, the boat was not moving at full speed while Keith was disconnected.

In fact, he could not risk losing his boat, and his avatar at the same time, by crashing on reefs.

To prevent that, he installed a strong sensor on the lower front of the boat to totally stop the vehicle once it detected something.

It was not all because even if the sensor detected the shore, it would not slow down in time and still crash on land. Thus, the boat was moving at a peaceful pace while Keith was away.

It was the only solution he could think of and even if the ship sometimes stopped in the middle of the ocean for no reason, it had yet to crash. Well, part of this was also the fact that land was rare to randomly come across.

'Better safe than sorry I guess.' He asserted while thinking about his security system. His mind then slowly drifted off to his others machines and to what he had done until now.

Thinking about all his past and future projects, Keith was happily humming while looking at the horizon. He came a long way, and even witnessed a full on war, but was now peacefully navigating through the ocean with not a single soul around here.

'Huh, the horizon today seems a bit off. Is there fog over there?'

He let out a yawn before scrubing his eyes.

'Wait, this line... it's not the ocean!', he rhapsodized.

He took his binocular and quickly confirmed his suspicions.

'Looks like I've finally found a suitable island... nay a continent.'

After several minutes, he landed his boat on the coast and set foot on this uncolonized paradise.

The shore was white from the sand that covered it. Large rocks littered the landscape and mediterranean trees stood tall in the distance.

Keith made sure his ship would not move an inch and started exploring. He wanted to check wether he had access to everything in this place before settling down.

Although there were lots of plants and trees, this scenery was pretty boring to him. In fact, the landscape was rather plain and it repeated itself over several dozen miles.

After several hours, Keith decided to postphone his exploration as it was nearing the end of the day, both inside and outside of the game.

He came back to the shore and disconnected from Project Overworld.

He was not afraid to disconnect in the middle of nowhere anymore, because he knew it was impossible for someone to have set foot in here before him.

The next day, he resumed exploring before finally deciding to settle down on a small hill a few mile away from the ocean.

It was the perfect place for him. In fact, he spotted a small mountain three hours of walking from the shore and he could use the enormous amount of water of the ocean to cool his various machines.

Keith returned to the ship and landed a ramp linking the deck to the shore and started pushing down all of his resources.

It was a long and tedious task. Unfortunately, he also needed to reform the 'train' because the hill he chose to settle on was not that close and he had to transport lots of trolleys.

Before doing so, however, he needed to resupply his stockpile of wood.

Thus, he started cutting down the local trees and hunter for a bit to resplenish his food at the same time.

The whole operation took him a few days because he also had to intend university courses in the meantime, but he was finally nearing the end of his preparations.

Keith installed the engine at the front of the cart procession, and started his precious machine.

After over three weeks of traveling through water, he was finally greeted by a familiar buzzing and he drove off to the promised land.
