Project Overworld

Chapter 26 - Midgard

The journey to the spawn city was pretty uneventful. Fortunately, he did not cross way with anyone as he travelled several miles on land.

His vehicle, using refined petrol as its fuel component, was driving forward with ease.

Keith fitted it with suspensions to make sure the vehicle would not break apart while traversing uneven landscape.

Although it ressembled a rover, he was really proud of his work and enjoyed the cold breeze while driving towards the world spawnpoint.

After traveling for a whole day, Keith finally recognized the landscape and estimated that he had traveled two-thirds of the distance from his second to his first base.

He knew that he would risk encountering peoples from now on and had to hide his rover before going further.

Thus, he disassembled the vehicle before digging up holes to hide the pieces into. He filled them back so that his work would go unnoticed and straddled onto his bike.

It was more inconvenient than driving a car, but he enjoyed it nonetheless. Also, no one would go crazy from finding out he was riding onto a simple wooden bicycle, as opposed to a modern vehicle.

However, he still had miles to travel before making it to Midgard and it would take several days to cover the remaining distance using this vehicle.

'Well, I'm not in a rush.', he thought as he continued forward on his journey.

Along the way, he always hid before disconnecting because he did not want anyone mess with his avatar.

Although he did not have much that could be stolen, if someone decided to take his bike from him he would have to travel this much slower. Worse, if they decided to kill him on the spot he would have to redo all the journey from the start.

He actually set up his spawn point at his ship, but he had no spare boat to return to the coast unnoticed nor did he have another car to travel all the way to Midgard.

However, the rest of the journey went uneventful and he safely made it to the spawn city.

He first spotted more and more players as he approched it.

Afterwards, the high wooden tower on the outskirt of the city appeared before him and he could finally witness the extent of the work done by thousand of players.

Mines were established in the surrounding mountains and people were doing various activites.

Some were cutting down trees, some were building walls and houses. Others were simply exploring the area or discussing with other players.

As for the town in itself, it was magnificent.

Roads were delimited and getting slowly paved.

Various constructions were place in an orderly method while trees and flowers stood up here and there. Although, these were not human produced. It would have taken too much time growing actual trees, even though the game was sped up compared to reality.

The city was only a few months old and trees would only grow this size in one year.

However, this also showed that the city was made using plans while trying to not disturb the nature more than necessary.

'So this it the work of a community effort?' Keith marveled at this city.

He stayed there admiring Midgard from afar before noticing the gazes of the nearby players.

'Well, I must be somewhat intriguing by standing still on my bike.'

Thus, he started to pedal towards the road and resumed his visit.

From inside, the city looked orderly established. Various shops were established at regular intervals so that everybody could have access to what they wanted only a few minutes away from foot.

From the outskirt to the center of the city, everything looked different.

Houses with gardens were giving away to terraced houses while sizes and shapes were graduated to more verticality.

After a few minutes of travelling and avoiding the pedestrians, Keith arrived at what looked like the epicenter of the city.

It was a huge place build around a circular park. Benches were placed here and there so people could have a place to exchange with their fellow comrades.

The most important buildings were also surrounding the place as it was buzzing with activity from hundreds of players.

Although the town was not that large, it resembled exactly to a modern day city but with medieval looking buildings.

It was a strange but beautiful combination.

Keith was struck.

'So they did actually make something good after months of war...'

He sat down on a bench in the central park and imprited the view in his retina.

After a while, he spotted several others players traveling by bike and was relieved from not standing out as much.

After a while, he decided to visit the buildings erected around area starting from what looked like the town hall.

'Did they elect a mayor or some sort of a city representative?' He though for himself, puzzled.

The building was almost one hundred and fifty feet wide for more than thirty feet high.

A large sign was posted on its facade saying "Midgard City's Hall".

On his way to the center of the city, he also noticed several signs indicating directions in the streets and some were clearly leading new players to this place.

Quite a number of players were coming in and out of the building as Keith ventured inside.

A reception hall awaited people there. Several benches were placed so they could wait their turn while sitting down.

Keith saw the waiting line and decided to sit down himself.

After a while, a young receptionist called out to him so he stood up and approached.

- "Hello, how may I help you?" She asked.

- "Hello, I'm actually a new player and I don't know much about this city. Could you describe everything important to visit here?" Keith replied.

- "Oh, for new players it's my colleague over here who is covering the basics of the game." She pointed at another office where a large number of players were waiting in line.

Keith, who did not want to wait another few minutes in queue, quickly explained himself :

- "No need for that, I have learnt about it by watching streams. Is there no special building that is worth visiting in this city?"

- "Of course there is! You could start by visiting the modernity museum a few building on the left of the City's Hall. It showcases the latest inventions players made in this game." She exclaimed. "You could also visit the bank which is at the opposite side of the park from here and the shopping center which is a bit further down the Colosseum Road." After noticing the confusion in Keith's eyes, she quickly explained : "This road connects all the North-East part of the city. Some signs are indicating the way, no need to worry."

- "Noted. Thank you miss and have a great day." He said before heading outside of the building.

'This city does have a lot more than I actually thought. I guess my exploration isn't over yet, I have buildings to check before going home.' He thought while heading towards the museum.
