Re: Death - Reincarnated Dead Into Another World

Chapter 12 - 10: Abyss Lake and its Resident

Once again, Mr. Ghost right here is travelling along the dense forest of scary looking trees. Coos of presumably flocks of scary looking birds. And rattles of presumably scary looking insects on the dry ground.

Yep. Same as usual.

Hmhm. What do we have here?

Oho~

A wild Inferior Ghost appeared!

Mr. Ghost, I choose you!

Mr. Ghost used Soul Consume.

It was very effective!

Inferior Ghost was consumed.

Nice, nice, very nice. I leveled up.

I'm getting stronger day by day. Mufufu. I now have my first hundred in my status aside from my HG and CG, which is my Physical Defense. It's 111 now.

I wonder what the maximum value is.

And to think it would be this easy to defeat a higher level monster. It's all thanks to this Soul Consume.

It's been a week since the day I defeated the Treant. Well, according to my approximation, that is. Since it's almost like it's night all day here, I still don't have any means to measure the daytime.

Anyways. As for the bored me, I've been travelling from places to places, trying to map the forest and find a way out at the same time. Never forgetting about consuming Inferior Ghosts I encounter, of course.

Well, I wasn't able to consume much because of the limit, but I consumed a remarkable number, nonetheless.

I was seriously surprised by the size of this forest, to be honest.

I used Float to observe the forest from a birds' eye view, but I can't seem to find the end. It just stretches farther into the horizon.

Now, from what I have learned so far, this Dastrientel Forest of the Deceased, or Dast Forest, has four noticeable divisions.

The Main Forest…

A huge lake…

A mountain range with one tall mountain at the center that reaches the skies…

And an actual graveyard with lined and organized tombstones. Although, it looks like it was abandoned for quite a while now. At the center of it, is a huge entrance to some sort of an underground dungeon.

The Main Forest.

It was the place where I was reincarnated and started my adventure. That place has the densest of tree population and it also has the most number of apparition type monsters that are drifting off in various spots. It's very obvious that it's different from the other divisions because of a trail, which is surrounding the forest itself.

Also, it's the only place that has its trees without leaves. The rest, they clearly are covered in leaves.

Though, I still couldn't pinpoint its position in a map, if there was one. Due to how wide this place is, I was still not sure if I was actually going north or south.

But when I got out of the Main Forest, there was a lake which is surrounded by the trees that have leaves. They're still color black though. Even the leaves are black.

I tried using Analyze on it and it displayed…

[Dastrientel Abyss: An enormous lake found in the southern part of the Dastrientel Forest of the Deceased. It was formed from an impact of a meteor.]

And I have to say, it does fit its name. It's like it will stare back at me if I stare at it long enough.

That was how I got to tell the directions, since it stated that the lake is in the southern part of the forest.

The lake is wide enough to fit a small village in it, it took me tens of minutes to travel from one side to another.

It was quite interesting to explore, so I don't have any complains. It was my first new landscape, aside from the black forest, after all.

From what I've observed so far, there are also monsters underwater but I've never tried to dive in.

Reason? It's eerie. It's all dark and I can't see anything beyond the surface. I have the Glow skill but that makes it all the more creepier, since I still don't know when a monster will pop out from the darkness beyond the light I produce. It's not about how I could get attacked out of nowhere. It's just…

… I can't handle suspense.

Especially in movies. I really can't handle suspense type movies well. You can make me watch supernatural doc.u.mentaries, but never a suspense movie. My heart will never last just a second of it. No thanks.

Right now, I'm floating above that same lake. Wandering around to memorize the routes that branches from the forest that is surrounding the lake.

I can see three routes that leads to somewhere, including the path that leads to where I came from, the Main Forest.

Since this lake is at the southern part of the forest according to my Analyze, then the northern route leads to the Main Forest. The northeastern route leads to the underground dungeon I found earlier. Lastly, the western route leads to the mountain rage with the tall mountain at the center. Each separated by quite a distance because of how wide the lake is. And when I travelled using the trails, each measures quite a distance. It took me about a day to reach the end.

The northeastern route that leads to an underground dungeon, especially, is quite far from the lake. I haven't tried to go in since I haven't tried the other areas yet. But I at least marked it with a huge boulder and used a created dagger to draw a symbol on it, to make sure I won't lose it the next time. It's just a plain X within a circle and another circle, with a zigzag drawn in between. I've been using that symbol to mark my own belongings. Mostly books.

Hmhm. Alright then. I guess, I'll try to explore a little bit more before going to the dungeon.

*rumble*

That's not my stomach. I don't even have a stomach in the first place.

Little by little, the sound is getting louder and louder. The vibrations in the air is also starting to stir. The water is starting to form ripples on the surface. And following is…

Clearly, yeah, certainly…

… I feel the terror of death before me.

*ROOOOAAAARRR!!*

All of a sudden, a huge mouth came forth, bursting out from the lake and gobbled me in one snap. The snap was loud and heavy enough to damage me, just from the force itself.

I-Intangible…!!

The huge snapping mouth fell down in the water with a huge splash, creating tall waves in the process. Its large silhouette slowly disappeared in the darkness of the lake, leaving me frozen in my place.

S-See…!?

That's what I'm talking about…! Th-That…! Aaahhh… My heart almost stopped… I don't have a heart right now, but my heart almost stopped…! If I have my heart right now, it would've definitely stopped…!

Wh-What the heck… What was that? It looked like a snout of an alligator, but the size is humongous, dang it…! The mouth had razor sharp teeth almost covering the corners. Even the tongue has spikes…!

Good grief…!

… Let's hurry out of this lake.

But…

Hmmm…

I'm kind of curious to what kind of monster it is, though.

I can at least use Analyze just to check up on it, right? They always say, 'Curiosity killed the cat.' or something. But… Just can't beat the curiosity, now can we? Mufufu. That's why it got to kill the cat in the first place, after all.

If it's easy to beat the temptations of curiosity, then there won't be any cat getting killed by it.

I just hope 'satisfaction' would bring me back if ever. Well, it's the Resurrection skill that would bring me back, though.

Alright, enough excuses. Let's just go for it.

[Author Note: Is this ghost an idiot?]

I'll just keep Intangible on and use Glow to its maximum brightness. Right, I'll also activate Amplify for emergency measures. Another, I'll continuously activate the Psychokinesis – Barrier.

Yeah. Got to make sure.

I just really hope that it's alone.

I hesitantly submerged myself in the water. In just a matter of seconds, I was already surrounded by darkness.

I feel like I'm already regretting this decision of mine… Even with the Glow skill, I can only see a few meters away. But beyond that, it's all darkness. It's all water, no impurities. But it's so dark, it's as if the light is being s.u.c.k.e.d away by the water.

Just how deep is this lake, anyway?

*rumble*

O-Oh there it is… U-Uh… It just swam right behind me… It did, it did. Calm down, me. I'm invisible right now. If worse comes to worst, I can just use Soul Consume.

It's alright. It can't see me. I hope.

… Wait…

Ah-

The light… from the Glow…

It can definitely see me…!

Followed by that realization, is a huge mouth greeting me from the darkness. It was huge enough to swallow a 15 meter tree wholly. Its width measures a bus's length.

It was as if it's a slow motion in a movie scene…

Goodness gracious!!

Analyze!

*SNAP!*

The monster passed by me and swam around, encircling me as it does.

… Nope.

NOPE.

… Nope, nope, nope.

Who's that idiot whose curiosity he can't control and tried to meet one heck of a monster?

It was me. Right.

Alright. I'm running. I'm running away. I'm actually floating away, but I'm running away from this place. I'm escaping. I'm using every means to escape. I forced the Float skill to make my speed faster as much as possible.

<Float skill advanced variant acquired: Teleport>

Oh, a skill.

Teleport this instant!

…!

… I'm back to the land. I'm not panting since I'm not breathing, but I feel like my heart is beating like crazy and I'm breathing raggedly.

Alright… No water. No darkness. No large mouths. No teeth. No unbelievably dangerous monster. No more Hydra.

Phew…

What… in the world was that…?? I know it's a Hydra. But what's with those numbers and skills? And for a Hydra, why does it only have one head? Be consistent with the common knowledge, dude!

Is that even beatable? Can someone actually kill that? It's almost ten times my average status…

There's no way I can beat that. There's just simply no way. I can use Soul Consume, but I can already imagine how I'll pass out even before I consume even a sixteenth of its soul. After that, it's all over for me. It will just recover and eat me while I'm unconscious.

It even has titles…!

Hmmm… Wait a sec. It's a monster, but why does it have titles? Out of all the monsters that I encountered ever since day one, there's not even one that had a title. Not even the Spectre title.

Then that guy appeared. And they're not just simple titles too…

Wait, there's no way that that guy's a reincarnator or something, is there? Its Intelligence Level is only 82%. I presume that for it to be a person or something, it must have an Intelligence Level of 100%, like me.

That's why, I assume it's not a reincarnator. Or so I speculate. I still can't be too sure in this world, after all.

Hmmm… Interesting. Even though it's undeniably strong, I want to meet it again someday. That, is when I became stronger. Not soon. Yeah.

Consequently so, I'll leave it alone for now. Even if just how much I want to acquire its skills by using Soul Consume, the risk is higher than the success rate. I may end up losing everything if I tried to gamble my way.

I hate vagueness. I'll only move when I see a clear victory. That's why, if I deem a situation to have more risk than its success, I'll give up. Well, that is if I have a means to give up, of course. I can't be too sure that every time I'll encounter a strong monster, I'll be able to escape just like earlier.

I also don't want to use or rely on Resurrect, for now. Not to mention, I still don't know its side effects. Also, I want to save it for emergency measures where all options leads to death.

Well, I hope I won't get there.

Thus, goodbye for now, Sir Hydra. I'll come back when I'm stronger and take your soul.

Ohhh… That was sort of a death god's line, right?

Nice, me. I wonder if I can be something like that. That would be really cool.

A soul reaper… Mufufu…
