The Strongest Fox-Demon (8)

At this point, Zhuang Yulang had no choice but to agree with her conditions. Since he could not let them use his father’s old clothes, he carried a bundle of straw and created a nest of sorts in the most comfortable corner he could find outside the house.

Standing beside Chu Xiang, Bai Yi said while feeling moved by his actions, “Our benefactor treats us so well and looks after us with such great care. Seeing the way he stood up for us just now, he must care for us quite a lot.”

Chu Xiang looked her in the eye and asked, “Let’s say you had a child and that child spoke back to you in such a manner for a mere rabbit. How would you feel then?”

Thinking for a moment, Bai Yi replied frustratedly, “I would definitely teach that brat a lesson! How dare that brat prioritize that rabbit higher than their own mother?! Heck, I would even eat that rabbit!”

Hearing her response, Chu Xiang burst out laughing, “How fiery of you, huh? In that case, you should be glad that Zhuang Yulang’s mother has a rather good temper. Neither did she teach your benefactor a lesson nor did she turn us into a pot of stew.”

Bai Yi stared blankly at Chu Xiang and said in a disheartened tone, “How come you’re able to make things sound so serious? Well… our benefactor didn’t actually go that far, right? After all, he did immediately apologize to his mother…”

“Wasn’t his mother the one who came to a compromise with him? Haiz… if you’re really that into scholarly guys, why don’t we go around looking for other ones?”

Not finding this whole situation worth the while, Chu Xiang reckoned it would be better for them to find a home than would actually welcome them in wholeheartedly.

Bai Yi heaved out a heavy sigh and said, “But none of them are our benefactors. Neither do we owe them any favors nor would they care for us, so what’d be the point of doing that then?”

“For the fun of it all, naturally.” Chu Xiang said. “ Yiyi, we are spirit demons. Only by playing around amidst the human world can we truly find great joy, so why do something that would bind us down? We should just do whatever we want. Otherwise, what’s the point of cultivating? Let’s just live our lives as normal foxes.”

Bai Yi began hesitating. “In that case… let’s do that after returning the favor to our benefactor.”

Chu Xiang stressed, “That debt of gratitude is yours to pay, not mine. Let me make it clear that he did not do anything to save me as I recovered by myself.”

Puzzled by her words, Bai Yi stared at her blankly. “What do you mean by that?”

“I do not have any connections with that man, nor do I owe him any favors. If you don’t believe me, why don’t you find out for yourself?” Chu Xiang said as she wagged her tail slowly. Since the original host is already dead, she naturally did not have any lingering connections with Zhuang Yulang.

Recalling her memories, Bai Yi realized that Zhuang Yulang had only ever given her a helping hand. On the other hand, he was not able to help Chu Xiang at all. As such, Chu Xiang certainly did not owe him any favors.

“No wonder you were never quite fond of the benefactor, let alone calling him your benefactor. It turns out he was only a benefactor to me!”

“That’s right! Only you alone. Since that’s the case, you should hurry up and think of a way to return the favor. Don’t forget to pay attention to and recover from your injury too. After all, the group of demonic cultivators is still in hot pursuit of us.”

Chu Xiang surveyed the narrow courtyard and said with a smile, “What a coincidence, there’s just enough space to set up a formation to keep us hidden in the town. The demonic cultivators definitely won’t be able to find us.”

Upon hearing her words, Bai Yi laughed, “That’s the exact fortune brought to us by the benefactor.”

Chu Xiang shook her head and decided not to pay her any more attention. That punk must be intoxicated by the poison of her benefactor’s grace. Who knows if spirit demons such as them have special feelings towards their “benefactors” or if they have come across so many other cunning monsters that they could not help but show weakness to such common benevolence? Aside from the fact that she has basically no interest in this situation, perhaps she also  finds Zhuang Yulang to be far too weak. Since he was unable to attract her attention in any way, she naturally did not have any interest in him.

After taking a stroll around the courtyard, Chu Xiang laid down the array formation just when both Zhuang Liu and Zhuang Yulang were not paying attention, which erased any of their demonic trails in the vicinity.

During dinnertime, the pair of mother and son resumed their usual touches of laughter and conversations as if their argument had never taken place earlier. And just as Zhuang Liu went to sleep, Zhuang Yulang quietly opened the window and called out, “Xue’er… Hong’er…”

Chu Xiang and Bai Yi both looked in the direction of his calls and noticed him waving his arms at them.

“Over here! Xue’er, Hong’ er, come here!”

Upon hearing his calls, Bai Yi immediately dashed over.

On the other hand, Chu Xiang laid back down and continued sleeping.

“I’m not going. You go and play with him. I’ll be absorbing the Heaven and Earth Essence on the rooftop later.”
