Second Chance: An Heiress Reborn

Chapter 14 - I'm not Afraid

"...so there will be no permanent damage, once the drug is completely washed out of her system. She should be waking up soon."

Voices started streaming into Alessia's system as she started to regain consciousness. When she tried to open her eyes, the light in the room was much too bright, and when she tried to speak, she found that her throat was so dry, that all she could muster was a weak groan.

" Here."

A smooth, deep voice spoke, as large hands gently helped her sit up in the bed, before passing her a glass of water. Alessia was still very shaky and weak, so she allowed the person to help her hold and drink from the glass. But, as her eyes began to readjust to the light, all the memories of the night began to flood back.

She remembered getting drugged and running for her life. She remembered feeling hopeless and scared. She remembered hiding somewhere before finally passing out, but she couldn't remember

anything else that happened.

Her eyes widened in terror as she jerked away from the person helping her, making herself as small as possible in the corner of the room. she looked around wildly trying to make sense of her surroundings. Only the calm voice next to her managed to calm her down.

" You're okay. You are in the hospital right now, and your brother is on his way here to bring you home. You are safe."

She peeked at the man sitting next to her. Although he was seated, Alessia could see just how tall he was. His shoulders were broad making his figure seem imposing, and unapproachable. Her eyes made their way up this man's frame before landing on his face. Her heart stopped.

It was him.

He looked younger, and his hair was longer, but it was him. His eyes were the same, dark and deep, almost unreadable.

"Ahem, young lady, there is no reason to be afraid of Mr. Conti. He's the one that brought you here."

The young doctor in the room interrupted the staring contest between Matteo and Alessia, trying to comfort her. Matteo regained his senses, and expressionlessly began to get up. He knew that he looked scary to most, especially with the scar that ran across the left side of his face. But for some reason, the thought that she would be afraid of him didn't sit right. As he began to move away, he felt a small soft hand grab his.

"I'm not afraid."

He froze, not completely believing what he heard. But as he turned around and got caught up in her eyes again, he could see that she wasn't lying. All of a sudden, he felt like laughing. He came closer to Alessia, towering her, a slight smile on his face.

"You sure about that? You don't know me. I could be a bad person for all you know."

His tone was light, almost joking, but there was some element of truth to what he said. He searched her eyes for doubt, for fear to finally crop up. But it never did.

Her eyes were still red and watery, her face pale, but there was no fear. Matteo looked down at her hand in his, feeling her soft skin lightly pressed up against his rough palm. Alessia's eyes followed his, and blushed before hastily pulling her hand away, and finally looking away.

She must have looked like a crazy person!! She might have known him but he definitely didn't know her. She racked her brain, trying to find a way to salvage this situation.

" W-well since you saved me, there isn't a reason for me to be scared of you." Alessia stammered, her face still red. She turned to the doctor, who was awkwardly watching the entire interaction, not knowing whether or not to leave the room.

" Doctor, when will I be able to be discharged?"

While Alessia discussed the details with the physician in the room, Matteo took some time to look her over. He was right; she was even more beautiful when she was awake.

When the doctor finally( and very quickly) took his leave, the room fell into an awkward silence. Matteo sat, blatantly staring at Alessia, while Alessia, red faced, tried her very hardest not to look in his direction. After a moment, she cleared her throat.

" Um, t-thank you for your help tonight."

Still staring into her face, he hummed in acknowledgement, making Alessia feel even more self-conscious. He finally spoke, his voice heavy, his face reverting to an expressionless state, thinking back to when she was passed out under the table.

"Do you who did this to you?"

Alessia's face also got serious thinking about the dire situation she was earlier that evening. She never expected Caterina to be that smart. Honestly, if it wasn't for the man next to her, Caterina would have succeeded in ruining her life a second time.

" I let my guard down, but never again."

Matteo looked into the face of the young lady, trying to figure out what she could have possibly gone through to make her like this. Her eyes were full of fury and wrath, her hands in tight fists. He wanted to comfort her, but he wasn't sure what to say.

"Good."

His response was short, but as Alessia looked up at her savior, she felt like he was encouraging her without saying the words. She smiled at Matteo, her eyes full of gratitude. If it wasn't for him, she would have lost her second chance. Alessia was so distracted by her thoughts, that when she tried to sit up some more, her legs got tangled up in the sheets, causing her to tumble out of the bed.

She closed her eyes expecting to feel the hard ground underneath, but it never came. Instead, she felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her body, preventing Alessia from falling onto the ground.

Matteo had pulled her onto his l.a.p, checking if she was okay and that the IV in her arm wasn't dislodged.

"You need to be more careful" Matteo's deep voice was flat, but Alessia could hear the underlying concern in his voice. Alessia beamed at Matteo, eyes unbelievably bright. To her, he was a superhero, her savior in more ways then he realized, and because of that she would never be able to see him in a bad light, not in this life or any other.

He felt almost uncomfortable with the strength of the smiles being thrown his way and the way her big eyes shined when on him. Something didn't feel right.

Why did he feel like an idol with his number one fan?

"Hey! What are you doing with my sister?!"
