Surviving Zombies One Day At Time

Chapter 52 - 52. The raid is there...

Jenny was so happy to have this power. The shield was perfect protection against sharp stones that they were driving over.

She thickened the shield and made her own path. Literally. The sandstorm was quite strong but for her, it meant just lesser surrounding view.

She glanced at the mirror and saw the little girl looking around curiously.

"There is nothing to see. The sand is too thick. "

"I'm just curious."

"About what?"

"How do you know where we must go? There is just sand and darkness. Aren't you afraid?"

Jacob patted her head. "What is actually your name?"

"Oh. Kala."

"Kala, having the power of black crystal made mother have special addition."

Suddenly in front of the windshield, a surrounding map could be seen. And what she saw, made little girl scared. Broken boulder mountain everywhere around them. Deep cliffs could be the end of them as well and then uneven and pointy stones.

"This place looks like one of the pictures from Moon or Mars. Earth with this kind of surroundings. Can humanity even survive this?"

Jenny sighed. The powers they got were not that simple. It seems they were given a chance to survive, but how many will really survive is another question.

"The humans survived so many things in our history. I think we will survive this as well, but real survival will come from those that can use black crystal's. We can use our powers to help humans survive this. At least those that we can help."

"So it will be our duty to help humans?"

"Not duty. We have the ability to do it. Kala, not many humans survived the zombie plague. Now, this thing fell down. The few that survive this will have to survive the next problem. Food will be less and less. Plant and animal world will change and soon the Earth we know will disappear."

"So, what do we do with our powers?"

Kala was still curious so she looked left and right at Jenny and Jacob.

Jenny looked at a few boulders that made almost a half-circular wall and drove there. The wind here was not as strong so she parked the car there and went out under the child's flabbergasted expression.

"Will she be fine?"

"Mom? She is the one with shield power. Kala, she loves to be home and just enjoy peace and quiet. But..." He saw Jenny taking out the camping gear and sighed. "... to sleep in peace you have to have a peaceful mind as well. She is worried about the rest of the humans. If she could make other cities like her own, safe, them she could calmly rest."

"But, why does she feel like she has to do that?"

"Because she is human."

"Human?"

"Humans are like that. We are quite destructive species, but when we realize that we are about to get extinct, we do all to stop that."

The little girl shook her head. "But there are many people that wouldn't do that."

Jacob patted her head. "Such people... are not real humans. Even animals try to survive and in a catastrophic situation, they help each other. Unfortunately, humans..."

"Humans have other feelings as well. Jealousy, greed, hate... and many more. Those negative feelings can sometimes bring another side to grow stronger, but mostly bring death and devastation."

"Then explain to me why do we have to save humans?"

Jenny opened the door and helped her out the car. With a smile, she sighed.

"Because humans can bring out such amazing children like you, Jacob and many cute kids that we met before in the Save Heaven City. Only humans have such power. There is an old saying that even in dirty water and mud, a beautiful flower can bloom. Among humans, many children grow into proper humans. Like you. So saving humans is actually giving a chance to the universe to bring to life such amazing creatures. Come now, I am hungry and you?"

When she descended from the car she realized it was same as in the Save Heaven City. The shield protected them from all sides and not even wind or storm could be heard. She could only see the tiny grains of sand hitting the shield and sliding away over it like waves of water in the ocean.

"Is it dangerous outside?" She truly wondered. Suddenly the huge sound of crushing winds could be heard and then it disappeared again.

Jacob patted her head and pointed at a small chair that was planted on the side of a small table. On the other side, Jenny used a propane burner to cook some finished food and wonderful smell rose from the pot.

Just now she realized how hungry she actually was. A small grumbling sound could be heard from her stomach and just when she started feeling embarrassed a plate with mixed vegetables, noodles and meat stood straight under her face.

"Eat and calm the Cookie monster in your belly, for now. Later I'll give you cookies." Jenny winked at her and Jacob pouted.

"What about me?" He patted his empty belly that resounded as well.

A big plate filled with delicious food was in front of his nose as well and he quickly started digging in.

"It is good to have healthy hunger. Let's eat and then we can go to sleep. We should sleep comfortably whenever we can. Sleeping in the car will be an option. If I find one of those multipurpose caravans, we will change into that. For now, this will be our vehicle."

Actually, she saw one of the vehicles in her trading store and couldn't wait to try it out.

And Jacob knew what she planned.

Sleeping comfortably together on the warm floor was something Kala didn't expect.

"How is it warm? Is Earth heating up?"

Jenny yawned. "No. Outside is minus degrees. Its the shield. I can control the temperature within. Now sleep. It is comfortable..."

Jacob and Kala could hear deep breaths and then looked at each other. She was asleep as she drove the whole night and the whole day. Even tho their destination was not far but she had to change her movements much time to be able to drive around many obstacles.

Way to that place usually would take a few hours by car, but in the current situation, who knows how long it might take them really. They were not driving themselves, but were awake just as long Jenny was as well. So their eyes shot close and they fell into a deep sleep.

Suddenly she popped open her eyes and looked through the shield. She could literally feel the movements. So many. It seems that the raid didn't stop as they had no feeling of pain or fear.

With a deep sigh, she stood up and her whole body got covered by that suit, from head to the toes. She went to the car and slowly took the whole bag of weapons that she prepared before, including that sword of hers.

Jacob suddenly opened his sleepy eyes. "Mom?"

"Stay here and sleep. I will be nearby. The raid is here and I'll try to gather as many stones as possible for the stuff I want to buy. Don't leave her alone. The light will be on so sleep bit more. It seems I will need to camp here for a couple of days. They are too many."

Jacob somehow knew that she would be safe. She had a shield, special gear and weapons. Those creatures wouldn't be able to even get close to her. So he just got closer to Kala and closed his eyes.

"Don't worry. I'm here. She won't be alone."

He murmured and closed his eyes, not even seeing how she just disappeared trough the shield.

On the outside, she had to show her strength but inside... Her heart was beating so hard against her ribs that it felt like it will or explode soon or burst through the ribs out.

As soon she was outside the small bulb she made her outer shield was automatically constructed but she let the sounds come in.

The sounds of strong wind and growling of zombies made the gloomy atmosphere even scarier as it is.

Inside her helmet was the clear picture of every zombie so as she started firing the whole raid changed their direction towards her. She was standing on top of those huge boulders and was at first shooting with guns, then she used arrows and bows and on end, she started using the sword.

And among all those, the sword was most useful. She could just cut off the heads as the zombies couldn't climb up. Like a mower, she used the sword to cut cleanly the heads of standing zombies that tried to touch her but couldn't.

More and more zombies appeared and she just continued doing so. Suddenly a noise could be heard nearby. Fireballs, water balls and earth balls were sent her way bit just cleanly slid on the sides of her invisible wall.

They couldn't hurt her, but they were quite loud and made her eyes hurt. Suddenly another set of protection glasses were summoned and now she could actually even see them clearly.

Not thinking about anything further she continued used with her killing and as the bodies started piling up more and more zombies tried to get closer to her, stepping on the dead people bodies without care.

But she stood high above them and just looked at the waves of creatures that long time ago were humans. Why fearing to kill, there is no more soul in them. No more compassion, even for their own. Just cold creatures of the night...
