Surviving Zombies One Day At Time

Chapter 53 - 53. Secondhand help

She felt tiered. Her arms hurt, her body hurt but there were still so many left. Growling of the creature's continued as they tried to reach her but their hand slipped on the shield.

Zombies changed. Their nails became longer and they lost the hair completely. Now they still had some resemblance to humans, but after this dust gets down she is sure they will change again.

Slowly she climbed down from the stones and shook her head a bit. She overused her body and felt tiered as hell. Putting another safety layer she made another safe place that will stay there as puffer zone in future.

Jacob slightly opened his eyes and saw her rubbing her arms.

Seeing him look at her she chuckled. "I'm fine. Sleep."

"Can't. I slept enough."

Looking at her watch she realized she was fighting zombies whole night long.

"Can I do anything?" He stretched and yawned.

She summoned map and smiled. "You have to use your powers as well. Try adding complete darkness around them and lead them into these two holes. They seem deep."

The cracks in earth were quite deep so his action might make at least some fall inside.

"I can help as well. I can send some light in darkness and they can go that way." Kala stood up and smiled at both of them with fresh woken smile.

"You two can play. But can't go out. Those creatures changed. A lot. Stay inside shield no matter what." Jenny felt so tiered that she hardly could keep her eyes open.

"In the trunk is a cooling box. Get some food and make sandwiches. After I wake up I'll cook something. I'm just too tiered now." Jenny slowly closed her eyes and this time just completely slipped into deep sleep.

Seeing her dark eyes Jacob felt sorry and started slowly massaging her body. Every inch of it was hard and it seemed hurt as her face showed deep discomfort.

Kala joined in and sighed. "What did she do whole time to have such muscle cramp?"

"I think she killed zombies whole night. With sword." He pointed at the sword that could be seen trough the pale light.

Light?!

He rise head and saw still dust in surroundings but some light could be seen sneaking trough it and showing the mass if zombies that attached themselves to the shield as they saw them inside.

Bold headed, long nailed and with as it seems two sets if teeth they tried to scratch or gnaw their way inside the shield. They didn't feel fear as they knew that shield would last, but nevertheless it was scary sight.

"Should we just blacken everything and sent them to their doom?" Jacob felt angry. Mother is tiered and all he could do is to blind them?

But thinking about the precious stones they needed to rise mothers system he felt unwilling. He took the sword and just poked one if the creatures heads trough the shield. As it was pressed by mass of people it couldn't escape, even if it wanted. It couldn't even fight back as it was tightly pressed to the shield.

As he pulled back the sword it got cleaned by the shield making him astonished. He looked at Kala that smiled brightly.

"This is good idea. Do we have more weapons that we could use?" She wanted to do that as well.

Jenny woke up couple hours later and saw two children stabbing here and there cowered in sweat.

"Hey, what are you two doing?" Her body felt much better and strangely these couple hours were enough to recharge her energy.

She saw them stopping and running towards her.

" Mother, you are awake." Jacob smiled as he brushed fine sweat on his forehead.

Jenny had literally wish to put him over her knees and smack his bottom. And somehow he felt incoming doom and stepped back.

"We didn't go out?"

"I can see you. Of course you didn't go out."

"I felt that we need the precious stones so I felt sorry to send them into abyss."

Jenny rubbed her head. She forgot to tell him. No wonder this child would over think it.

"Sorry, my bad. I forgot to tell you."

He looked at her searching her head and chuckling.

"What?"

"Uhm, it seems system add the stones automatically to the count after their death. All zombies that get killed, no matter if I killed them or someone else." She pointed at the few zombies that were planted to the shield.

"How far is the range?" Jacob didn't take it personally as she was just too tiered before.

"Many zombies got stomped by others and I realized that the count got up even if I didn't kill them personally. So what I did is to walk from one side if stones to other and just kill those that came too close while the others would step over heads of others and crush them."

She remember night before she saw data and quickly rising numbers even tho she didn't kill after while. on one side if the stone was deep gap in earth and she saw many of them falling inside and the numbers rose with it.

That is reason she went to sleep. She wanted to try something.

"Let us clear the zombies. Jacob, produce darkness. I will try to spread the shield and just push them into abyss."

Hundreds in one time were pushed inside the deep hole and she pulled back the shield do another group of zombies rushed in front if them. Over and over again.

Until she heard growling in Jacobs belly.

"Did you eat?"

Kala and him shook their heads making her get angry.

"I know you two are children, but food is important. Couldn't you just make yourselves sandwiches?"

"We had so much fun, that we forgot." With tiny voice Jacob explained while looking at the floor.

"Next time do what I tell you right away. Fun... sigh." She just sighed and shook her head.

Looking at sumptuous food that filled the plates the children dug in. Ravioli with tomato sauce and salad. Yes, salad. She had still some fresh food in the small fridge so she prepared fresh green salad.

Munching on green leaves Kala started laughing.

"I actually hated greens but now I am glad to eat them. Am I weird?" She slowly put the salad leaf into her mouth and snacked on it.

"No. Your body is asking for it. Before you hated it as you had too much. But now since there is not much you find it precious and interesting. Humans are really strange, aren't we?" Jenny added more salad to child's plate and smiled as she saw Kala eating greens with gusto.

The day passed and when the night came they chose to sleep comfortably as they were still surrounded by large group of zombies.

"This is going to take us days." She made separate bubble as they needed to relieve themselves and just washed her hands with water they brought.

Actually she brought quite a bit water and gasoline with her so she was not worried.

Kala saw her comfortably washing hands and face and felt weird but didn't ask questions. Especially after she saw all the empty bottles disappearing. Maybe she had another power as well?

She yawned and rubbed her sleepy eyes.

"Good night!"

"Good night!"

"Sleep well."

As they fell asleep a creature climbed up the stones and saw them sleeping calmly like nothing was going on.

"Hm. Interesting. Power user. But this one is hard to attack. Never mind, she is not the only one."

He turned his head and looked at growling bunch with despise. "Useless. Just waste if space."

With wave of his hand few fireballs were summoned and started burning the crowd. As they were pressed tightly they couldn't escape and burned more and more.

For a long time fire burned on the zombie tide and as it calmed down he jumped down to search between heaps of ash and started cursing.

"My precious power stones. These creatures were so useless not to have even one? Useless, truly useless! He was searching here and there and found only few far away.

Dusting off the few hundred stones he cursed.

" Damn, this is enough only to replenish my powers. Why did I even waste my time to do this?" He steamed on one skull that was not completely burned in anger and walked away while mumbling fierce curses against lowly zombies.

"You see. Letting others do the job is not bad idea at all. That creature is zombie as well. But he has regained dome if its wisdom. I fear he is feeding only on power users and not on normal humans. I font know is that hood or bad, but he is strong. To burn whole raid, how much power does it have?" Jenny furrowed her eyebrows and rushed to use the satellite.

"Yes?" Tiered voice could be heard.

"I fear we have bigger problem than zombies." Jenny went straight to the point.

"Speak."

"There are zombies with powers and normal zombies became harder to kill. They move in large groups, have two rows of teeth, long nails and no hair. They evolved. I am in my way to you. Stay safe until I arrive. It will take me quite a time."

"What did you just say?" His voice became awake. It seems he woke up now completely.

"Zombies have now..." She started explaining again, but he stopped her.

"Not that!" His voice became pitch higher...
