The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 5 - That’s Not How It’s Supposed to Happen

"Do you believe me now?"

"Yes! Yes I believe you! Just- Give me the knife!"

"Oh! Sorry, here."

*schlock*

"Ah!"

Rhaxtyx calmly pulled the knife out from his gut and handed it to Angeline. She screamed and took it with a shaking hand. She hurriedly wiped the blood with a fallen leaf and sheathed it.

"And don't do something like that again!"

"Fine. I won't. So? You promised me y'know. Show me them spells!"

"Okay okay. I'll show you. But before we endanger any kind of wild life around, we have to find a suitable place. We also need a place to rest. So we should go. Plus the blood might attract ferocious animals. I also don't think they would just give up chasing me."

"Oh right who were those guys? They seemed fun!"

"I'll tell you when we get there so let's go."

They journeyed through the forest, under the calm of night. Angeline was walking in front of Rhaxtyx as she knew this area better. They were careful not to leave any trail behind. While they were walking Angeline seemed to remember something and stopped.

"If I remember correctly there was a cave nearby. I remember that tree, there's a scar from a spell on it."

"Really? How do you remember it so vividly?"

"I've been living outdoors for quite a while now and lived in this forest for a month before entering the village. There's a cave that way not too far away. I camped there."

"Let's go there then!"

The cave was not too far just like she said. They reached it after half an hour of walking. There were charcoal on the ground towards the inside and there were also some leather pieces lying around. It was obvious that this cave was a camping spot at some point. Angeline cleared a small pit that was full of ashes with practiced movements and went towards the wall of the cave. There were some stick there and she picked them up and put them inside the fire pit. After collecting some firewood from the forest she sat down in front the fire.

Rhaxtyx sat opposite of her and was peeking at her time to time. Angeline noticed this and sighed.

"Haah. Speak. Your gaze is irritating."

"You said they wouldn't quit following you, the mercenaries I think, and they were clearly there to kidnap you. They even started a fire in that small, remote village. What's up?"

"Even though I would like to tell you, it is a loooong story. I'll tell you later if I have time."

"Oh come on!"

"Plus, we have a more urgent situation. If I don't teach you some magic you'll be more of a burden."

After Angeline spoke up to this point Rhaxtyx's eyes began shining with excitement. He pulled his fists to his face and talked with a high pitched voice.

"Teach me please!"

"I said I would so get your face away from me!"

Angeline fixed her posture and pushed Rhaxtyx's face away. Then she started explaining.

"First, I have to tell you about chanting. Your understanding of chants is totally different from mine. Probably because of the different world situation.

Chanting is directly connected to your understanding or you can call it comprehension. As you continue to research about magic and increase your comprehension, you can use more complex and powerful magic. Of course you'll be able to control mana more efficiently as well. The easiest spells are comprised of one word chants. A level above that is a line. A magician can only cast a spell up to nine lines, that is the highest recorded level of magic and that can only be accomplished by Gods.

Us mortals can only see seven lines and that is only reserved for the mortal race that has the strongest aptitude towards magic, fairies. Humans can reach that level of comprehension potentially but only one or two individuals were recorded since ancient times."

"So there are Gods here as well. What are these 'Gods' specifically?"

"I say Gods but they are just really powerful beings that have left their mortality behind. Every species in the world have a number of them, fairies being the most because of their aptitude towards magic. Humans, on the other hand, because of our low aptitude, have the lowest number of Gods with 9."

"So humans are the weakest?"

"You can say that."

"I like it! It'll be more challenging that way. As I'm a real God, I have to be the most powerful being in the world!"

"I don't know about that. You still have almost no mana."

"You will see. If not now, then soon."

"Back to topic. I presume you have a better understanding towards chants of this world so I'll be teaching you a simple one word spell. It is [Disguise]. It easy as it is useful, especially in your shoes as you look like a demon."

"What's that demon business anyway?"

"White hair and crimson eyes are the most typical characteristics of demons. Most of them have pale skin as well but it is not so uncommon to see a demon with a human-like skin color. They are always hunted and killed on sight. The Adventurers' Guild also offers rewards for every demon head brought. They ascertain the mana level and pay accordingly. So in your case, it would be the lowest level demon because of your low mana level. You would at most be 20 silver."

"What?! That low?! Well it is still pocket money so if I get my hands on a cloning spell then who knows…"

"I suggest you don't get your hopes that high as it is a really hard spell to learn and a very rare one at that."

"Sh*t. So how do I use this [Disguise]?"

"You just imagine how you want to look and stimulate your mana to change you appearance."

"Seem easy enough. Let's give it a try. [Disguise]!"

Rhaxtyx did as Angeline told, imagined how he wanted to look and stimulated his mana accordingly. The spell started correctly and took effect. When he opened his eyes though, he saw Angeline's wide open eyes and a crooked smile on her face. He couldn't help but ask.

"What's the matter?

"What are you supposed to look like?"

"I don't have much reference so I tried looking like you."

*Zbam!*

"Do I look fat, you blind dog!?"

"OW! Fat? What do you mean? I felt the spell initiated correctly and changed my appearance?"

"It did change yes! But your eyes cannot see properly can they?!"

Angeline turned her head while pouting and crossed her arms. Rhaxtyx was rubbing his forehead, where she hit him and was questioning what he has done wrong. Seemingly disappointed by something, Angeline let out a forceful breath and lay down.

"I'm going to sleep so don't disturb me! Also take watch!"

"Haah fine. Sorry."

He got up and walked towards the entrance of the cave. He sat cross legged and thought up of something.

'Wasn't there a meditation that helped me plenty of times during the Ancient War? I think I haven't used it since it ended. Maybe it could help me again.'

He closed his eyes and started to breath in a unique way. This meditation technique stirs the mana around the body and calls it towards itself. After a moment Rhaxtyx could feel the mana around him drawing closer.

'Yes! This is it. Come to me my little mana particle.'

After meditating for a couple of minutes, he felt his mana supply was filled to the brim. But he still felt so little amount.

'What the hell? How is this possible? Why do I have such little amount of mana? I'm sure the meditation worked and I feel quenched. Let's try depleting it.'

"[Disguise]"

He felt a little usage of mana.

'This can work I hope.'

Thus he started a cycle where he used disguise until he felt it was enough and then filled his mana pool with the meditation. This went on until dawn but he still didn't feel any increase to the size of his mana pool.

'This doesn't work. And frankly I'm bored! I need something else. What about [Fireball]? I'm pretty sure I remember the chant so let's give it a try.'

He left the cave a little and looked around. The coast was clear of any living creature so he could practice to his heart's content. He lifted his arm and aimed forward, then he started chanting.

[Flames that came from the deep, awaken!]

*BOOM*

As soon as Rhaxtyx finished the first line, mana exploded right in front of him, sending him flying inside the cave and hitting the back wall. With the sound and shockwave, Angeline was woken up from her sleep with a scare so she jumped to her feet immediately and looked around and at the back wall of the cave, among a pile of rocks, she heard a sound akin to a whimper.

"That's not how it's supposed to happen! Ugh!"
