The Liberal Assassin

Chapter 59 - Light in the Darkness

"You're late!"

A very haggard Khronos appeared nearly twenty minutes after the time we agreed on. I allowed the man some time to catch his breath despite the burning questions I had. Other than the clothes on his back, the scientist didn't appear to be carrying much. Then again, he came alone.

"Where's Nash and Sable?" I never thought I'd sound so uncollected but the thought of Nash being taken in by Luna Security froze my blood.

Khronos waved his hand. "He made it out somehow. They were closing in too fast so he bought time for me to bring all the evidence over. Sable was taken in by Luna Security though."

I felt the air leave my lungs as if the impact of the news had punched my right in the gut. The scientist seemed to realise what he was saying and then explained further. "She's not harmed. We just lost our hold over her against Arvin. Luna Security has taken her in to guard. Nash played the part of her kidnapper and they now suspect him as the Night Walker. He did a number on their guards after all."

That certainly was something. How did all my plans fall through?

"And where is Nash?"

Khronos looked guilty at that. "He's on the run and probably in hiding. He couldn't come here because they're chasing him."

My knees folded beneath me, unable to support my weight with the shocking news. We were cut off from Nash with absolutely no means of contact.

"Don't worry," said Khronos. "He'll be back before you know it. Have some faith in him. Meanwhile, we have a job to complete."

With a grin, the scientist produced a small chip held between his thumb and index fingers. A small spark of hope grew.

"How did you…?"

The green haired man laughed. "I told you Nash was buying us time, right? I had this disabled not too long after finding it. They might know our base but we can use this to track them down too. I've put jamming on it temporarily so that you can work on it if you want. We might have lost Sable and that spy but we got something even better."

Lady Luck doesn't entirely hate me after all!

"Thank you."

"No, thank you. You're going to be the one doing the work. I have to track down all our scattered members."
