The Little Calamity

Chapter 2 - 2 City of blood, damsel in distress

The city of blood, in this world where cultivation reigned supreme it was an anomaly. Every advantage that a cultivator had was sealed whenever they came close to this place, their ki couldn't be used no matter what they did and their physical strength that was usually enhanced by their cultivation level returned to that of a normal man.

Even those at the peak couldn't resist this effect, many normal human went to this city thinking that they would be able to live a more just life but after nearly a million people came to his city the owner announced the goal of this seal. When you kill someone the seal would transform a part of the victim blood into physical strength that the killer would automatically absorb.

What was weird was that this blood energy would only be refined by your body once you left the city of blood and this was a one time thing. In other word, the longer you lived in the city the stronger you would become once you left and once you left there was no point in coming back, it was made like this so that more people would come.

After all if everyone in the city was already a monster it would be useless to come, it would be the same as anywhere in the world. The owner simply wanted more blood, nobody knew why but he encouraged everyone to kill each other. What was ironic was that the very first victim of this hell was the very man that created it.

Even he couldn't resist his own creation and it was impossible to endure the rage of a million people. This was the story passed down for over 500 years, during this time many came to this place in hope of having a better future but few could even benefit from it.

Cultivator were good at fighting with their ki but once they entered this place they were barely better than a normal human, there was also other ways to strengthen a body which wasn't as dangerous so true genius would rarely come to a place like this.

That's why only a beast born with superhuman strength like Rayne could become a nightmare in this city. He was silent, deadly, patient and his fighting instinct was above everyone in the city, the worst thing was his emotionless eyes that didn't even seem to care when he slaughtered someone.

Normal people couldn't endure such bloody scenes along with the constant threat to their lives, that's why most people wouldn't even stay for a year in a place like this, only the little calamity was a constant threat.

And this little calamity was out of the city, still looking for anything related to the alchemist, the seal affected everything in thousand kilometer radius so it could be everywhere. During his little adventure he found a boar that was roaming the field, eating wild mushroom.

Although he never hunted in his life he immediately knew that this was food. His instinct told him that it would be a good reserve of food so he stalked it and waited until it was full to make it lower it's guard. Once he saw an opening he pierced it's right eyes with his fingers before kicking it's chin, he grabbed the two horns on it's head and threw it on the ground before going for it's heart but before he could reach it the beast swung it's head, using it's tusks like a sword.

He grabbed on it's horn and jumped with them, using it's momentum to break it's neck. He plunged his hand in the boar and immediately ate it's heart.

" … tasty."

He had a small smile while he ate it, he could feel his body warm up simply by eating it. Once he was done he started to drag the body through the field. The sound of battle soon entered his ears, he instinctively walked toward it and he saw a large group surroundings a small group while outside of the seal a single man was holding more than 40 cultivator by himself without even breaking a sweat, stopping them from joining the smaller group inside.

One of the man at the back of the big group started laughing.

" Haha, you though that using small fries trained in melee combat would save you but it's useless if they can't even enter this pla..."

a hand suddenly pierced the man's c.h.e.s.t, it came out from the front while holding a still beating heart. The last thing the man could see before dying was his heart being crushed.

Without any warning the huge boar body was thrown into the group, crushing a few people with it's weight and speed. Rayne started running through the group, dodging every attack with ease. Every time a weapon came towards him he simply shifted it's trajectory toward another enemy before killing the man that attacked him.

The green field was now turned red, Rayne glanced at the small group of 10 people, just as he was about to leave he felt the killing intent of one of the man. He crouched so fast that it was as if he disappeared into the ground, the next second the skull of the man was already crushed.

He looked at the group, there was 8 men and a single female wearing baggy clothes.

" Anymore.. fighting?"

He couldn't articulate well which made everyone scared of him, just as the man said they were all small fries in the outside world, they were training for close-range fighting and sacrificed their cultivation for that that's why their confidence was so low. Luckily it was what saved their life. The woman was the only one to act normally.

" Hello sir, thank you for saving us."

Although she wasn't particularly beautiful, she could even be called a little ugly, her warm smile caused Rayne's heart to speed up. She had black hair, brown eyes and it was impossible to tell her body's shape through her clothes

' What is this look?'

He knew that smiling meant they wanted peace but he felt like her smile meant something more, he tried to replicate her smile but his mouth barely moved. In the end he couldn't endure looking at her anymore and ran.

" Boar is .. a gift."

He talked a little more recently since he moved more through the city so he wasn't as bad as when he gave food to the man however he still couldn't yell making it impossible for them to hear him.

" Is that a human?"

" He killed Frid without even bathing an eye, or rather he caused such a bloodbath without a care."

The eight men looked at Rayne running away then looked at their comrade outside of the barrier. They were saved yet they were still trapped. The woman looked at them with a sad look, sadly all of these men knew that they were a sacrifice, even if she went out to fight the guy outside of the seal he would kill them before she could even do anything and her only opportunity would be wasted.

"... You guys are free to do what you want but you can't follow me. If you make it back I will make sure to compensate each of you for your sacrifice."

None of them said anything, they knew their role. They accepted this role because of their low talent, this would ensure a bright future for both their kids and wife. At least they had a chance to survive but those guys outside...

The woman walked towards the city, doing her best to make it so no one would notice her, the image of the man that just saved her played in her mind, although others didn't notice she knew that the only man that was killed on her side leaked killing intent.

' He might look like an emotionless killer but he only killed those that wanted to fight and that boar..'

She believed that she heard the word gift from him but she wasn't sure. She couldn't help but smile a little when she though of his attempt at a smile.

' What did he go through to have eyes like this?'

…....

Rayne was hiding beside a box, melding into the shadow while he looked at a group of people, with time he learned a few things about this city. The meat that was brought in the city every week was put there by the mayor of this town, one of the descendant of the creator of this place. The meat that he brought was high quality meat that would nourish the body, this was yet another bait to bring more people in this place.

Rayne had no idea why the mayor went through so much trouble to do this but that meat was simply too delicious to pass on. The problem was that he wasn't the only person thinking like this. The effect of killing someone was pretty minor, although it was good for the body the meat was even better for a cultivator that's why nobody yielded even when they knew that Rayne was there.

Apart from that meat most people used outside currency to trade normal food, although it was common for people to kill themselves for it there was still a semblance of society. It was actually rare for anyone to kill as much as Rayne.

Everyone was standing still, looking around to see who would make the first move. People used to rush at it without a care but the threat of the little calamity weighted them down. Still after a few hours they grew restless, a few left unable to endure the pressure anymore but soon the first person moved toward the food.

*bang*

a bullet hit the man on the c.h.e.s.t, creating a bloody hole on it but he ignored it and continued running as if it was nothing. This was the signal for everyone else to start. A few bullets flew towards the first man, one hit him in the head and killed him.

Every person that was in the lead became the next target, bullets were a little weak and didn't cause much damage unless they hit on the head. Spears and arrows on the other hand were based on the person's strength and dealt much more damage, they could kill someone simply by hitting the body so they were more popular even if they were less accurate.

' Guns are hard to avoid but unless they hit my eyes they can't kill me.'

He just threw his boar away so he needed something to eat. Fear wasn't something he knew, he simply knew how to survive. Bullets weren't strong enough for him to ignore food, in this world where everyone is born with a strong body guns simply didn't have enough power on their own to cause serious damage, much less handguns like the men had.

Of course normal people would still die if they were shot in the head, meaning that it was quite deadly in this city, Rayne was the only one in this place that could survive something like that.

People used guns as a type of staff by infusing their ki in the bullets and activating a skill with it, it was a quick weapon that could be charged in advance but this option was impossible to use here, there was only normal bullets. He looked around and sneaked towards those that had guns, ready to finish them first.
