The Little Calamity

Chapter 21 - the final trial

Rayne looked at the dark cloud, he could tell that they were much more powerful than earlier. While the lighting was preparing itself he was able to take a look at the room around him, Arisa still seemed like she wasn't there even if her body was present while all the spectators were looking at him with shock.

It's not because of the second heavenly tribulation, rather the black aura around him shocked everyone. That's when Luther arrived, with a single wave of his hand he forced everyone out of the building, even the head elder Serah wasn't spared. He quickly started to build a barrier to prevent anyone from spying on what was about to happen.

The news of a black talent was already leaked but the fact that the black aura was still there gave him a hint that something might happen again. He looked at Rayne take the first three lightning bolt and just like the first time it didn't even tickle him.

The fourth one was as thick as an human, Luther looked at Rayne, curious of how he could endure something like that so easily. He knew that it was a question of willpower but he felt like it was cheating for someone to not even feel anything.

' Most people die at the second bolt you know?'

Still, the fourth bolt hit Rayne, it tried to invade his body and mind but it was like he didn't even have any hole in his defense. The giant bolt hit him and then snake-like lightning crawled over his body, trying to find a way in without any success.

This time the bolts were much darker, turning from a pale blue to a purple color and at the same time it was more concentrated, reducing it's size back to something more normal. When Rayne was hit he felt a little ticklish but he could still shrug it off. As if angered, both the sixth and the seventh bolt came at the same time.

' Is there a need to make such a big spectacle? If you are just trying to distract me there is better ways.'

He felt like someone was playing a prank on him, this time a purple bolt came along with two royal blue ones, scaring Luther who was watching. The size of this attack would probably harm everyone around.

' Arisa!'

He looked at his daughter that was on the side, he immediately tried to put a barrier around her but could he be faster than the heavenly lightning? Luckily his actions were enough to alarm Rayne. He instantly removed the barrier around his body, accepting the lightning directly inside. He could feel an incredible pressure on his organs but with a single thought he subdued the raging power, the heaven defying lightnings were like obedient dogs in front of him but with no way to absorb them he could only release them on the ground.

He saw the clouds disappear then he looked at Arisa who was completely safe, satisfied with himself he went back to the trial. Luther was looking at Rayne, truly realizing that her daughter brought back a monster.

' This was a royal tribulation and he dared to remove his defense just to protect Arisa..'

…...

Rayne looked around him, the entire space was black. Even while he was taking in the lightning nothing ever happened. He could only walk forward but as soon as he took a single step he felt like he forgot something extremely important.

He shook his head and looked around, he was in blood city like always and he was carrying a type of bear-cow monster for Arisa to cook.

' I never forgot anything, it must be my imagination.'

He was 15 years old and he lived with this lady for more than a year now, he loved her more than anything.

' Love? When did I learn this word?'

He shook his head again, he loved watching Arisa cook. Although she always looked kind he likes the way she put so much care in her cooking just for him, he felt like during those moment he could monopolize her kindness.

At this thought his usually blank face had a very small smile. He started rushing to his home a little faster. He opened the door filled with expectation, with luck he would be able to see another smile from her.

' Danger.'

He barely opened the door when he was greeted by a shotgun tied with a rope. As soon as he opened the door it shot at his face, luckily he was able to duck in time but now he felt something coming from above. He was about to kill the person attacking him but he completely froze when he saw that it was Arisa.

' Kill her!'

His body was screaming at him, although she was holding a sword he could simply jump and crush her neck. This was the most efficient way to save himself yet he jumped away.

" Arisa, is this another way to show affection? Like a pat?"

He was confused, how could someone as gentle as her attack him like this.

" It's not, I am going to kill you Rayne!"

This simple sentence caused Rayne to puke blood, he looked at Arisa with tears in his eyes.

" Why? If I did anything wrong I can try to fix it, I am sorry, please don't hate me. Not you."

His mind was in a mess yet his word didn't have any effect. Arisa's face was twisted in rage and desperation.

" Can you revive the dead?"

He shook his head, he didn't have any special power after all.

" Then you can't fix it. Do you remember when we met?"

" You were surrounded by enemies so I wanted to help your group. I remember your smi..."

" Did you forget what you did after saving my group?"

That's when Rayne understood what she meant.

" That man was filled with killing intent if I didn't kill him he would try to kill me later."

He never killed innocents, as long as they didn't wish to kill anyone Rayne would leave them alone. Still, even if that was the case Arisa didn't seem to care.

" He was my lover, you killed him based on what? Your instinct? You think you can kill everyone because you are the strongest in here?"

She ran at him, swinging her sword with all of her strength.

' Kill her! If you don't she will kill you.'

His instincts were whispering to him, he was conditioned to kill anyone that attacked him but he was able to hold himself back.

" I never killed an innocent."

He tried to explain himself while ignoring the fact that she had a lover but it only enraged her even more.

" He never harmed anyone! If you didn't kill him he would have been able to run away from this cursed place."

She started swinging faster and faster in anger.

" This cursed place that you forced me to stay in for a year now. I tried so hard to kill you, poison, sending assassins, I even faked being in danger hoping that you would get hurt for me!"

Each of her words pierced deep in his heart.

' Was all the happiness that I had a lie? Kill her.'

Each time she attacked him he had to fight his instinct to not kill her and now his reasons to stop were slowly disappearing.

" Arisa.. I .. I love you."
