The Little Calamity

Chapter 8 - 8: Inheritance of ancestor

While the sword was quickly being built inside of Rayne a woman that was completely covered in armor was running around the city looking for him. She seemed to be straining herself, using all of her strength to find him more quickly.

" I knew I should have left this place a lot earlier. If I don't find him soon they are going to find me, at worst I might have to run away alone and hope they don't go after Rayne."

Her voice was filled with urgency, she was hoping that nobody knew her relation with Rayne. During all of these years Rayne never let any assassin run away, killing absolutely anyone that even though of harmed her so there was a high chance nobody could report him.

" But there could be some video, if they managed to connect to the internet in some way..."

She hastened her pace, each time she jumped there was a small ripple of light under her feet.

….....

It didn't take long for the great sword to be finished, once this was done Rayne was immediately sent out of his soul with no way to look back.

' This sword posses every type of elements apart from earth, was there a problem in the building process?'

He didn't really think about it since he couldn't change it. The place was still shaking so he started to look for an exit. He saw the one at the end of the bridge but there was a high chance it wouldn't be safe. He looked back at the hole that he made, the ceiling was over ten meters tall so he would need to climb on the walls to reach it.

Just as he looked around for the best place to start climbing he noticed the small path that appeared. He used the bridge to reach the wall before crawling toward the hole in which he instinctively went in, the tunnel went unexpectedly deep, slowly going down. Rayne had to crawl all the way until he arrived in front of a break wall.

He hesitated for a second, unsure of what would happen if he smashed it. That's when his omnipotent view activated again, letting him see past the brick wall, the size of the ability was a lot smaller this time it simply showed the room in front of him. There was only a small square that seemed to block this weird vision in the room.

Seeing that things were safe he smashed it without a care. He didn't even question this weird power he just used as he entered the laboratory. He looked at the inside blankly, it was identical to what he just saw.

He went toward the biggest book in the room that was held by a pedestal. He didn't take it, instead he simply started to read it. It started with a tale that felt strangely familiar to Rayne.

*A man was born loved by the heaven which gifted him everything, talent, look, a strong body and comprehension beyond humans limit. He was an unparalleled genius that had the purest soul, that soul was precisely why the heaven loved him so much.

The earth became jealous of the man and started to play with his fate, although she couldn't break the heaven's protection she made sure that he lived a tragic life even if she couldn't kill him.

As soon as he found love she robbed it from him, soon after the man started to lose anyone that was close to him in the most gruesome ways.

" Let's see how pure his soul will be after this."

She told the heaven, desperate for his attention. Still, she underestimated the love that the heaven had for this simple mortal. War erupted between the two and in the middle of this the genius slowly turned mad, anyone that he started loving would die and he could never do anything about it.

He started to look for ways to calm the earth, to gain her recognition, all in hope of living a peaceful life. After years of study and dedication he finally created what he wished, a pill that would grant him the highest affinity with the earth element.

Although it succeeded it was the result of an entire lifetime of study, it was too late for him to start his peaceful life so he continued working as an alchemist, deriving eight other pill from the one he just created. Each of these 9 pills represented one of the nine elements. After creating them the man finally realized the true purpose of the so called highest affinity, it granted him complete immunity to the corresponding element.

The earth element was a little too subtle for him to notice but it was different when it came to fire, he couldn't feel the heat anymore. After this discovery he tested with multiple source of damage and he realized that nothing could even hurt him anymore.

He became a god and the very next day he died in his sleep, he had accomplished everything that he could and couldn't accomplish anything that he truly wanted, the tragic tale of a genius.*

Rayne turned the page only to be met with blank pages. He was a little confused, this giant book didn't even have 2 pages of content.

' I have the feeling that something bad is happening.'

He couldn't afford to stay here for much longer, or so his instinct told him. He turned around, ready to leave without a second though.

Just as he was about to reenter the hole a weird tentacle of light flew towards him, he could barely react in time to evade. The thing seemed persistent as it flew towards him again.

' What is this speed?'

It was easily a few time faster than he was, he could only twist his body a little to let it fly past him before jumping away. It was as if it had a life of it's own, it fully took advantage of the fact that he was in the air to try and grab him yet Rayne twisted his body in an impossible shape, causing it to miss again.

' Oh come on, stop evading already, I don't have the power to play with you.'

The tentacle stopped mid air and finally caught Rayne who immediately tried to tore it with brute strength.

' Goddamn monster, stop struggling.'

It brought him back in front of the book, when he noticed that there wasn't any danger Rayne calmed down.

' Does it want me to read it?'

' No, I want you to burn it, of course you have to read it.'

The alchemist's soul was watching over Rayne with frustration. He had prepared a few riddles for his successor to solve and yet he tried to leave without even trying. He could only give up and directly give him what he needed.

' Are you so eager to suffer the same fate as me kid?'

Rayne couldn't hear him however he still reopened the book, new pages appeared and the first one seemed to be a message addressed directly to him.

*If you read this you are the same as me, born with everything yet unable to hold what is dear to you. Although you might able to save your lover for a few time misfortune will constantly fall upon her. You must have noticed it, right? That's why, as your ancestor, I left you everything that you needed.*

The book then started explaining the plans that it had for him, in condition for lifting his curse Rayne had become his apprentice and learn alchemy with the help of his legacy. It explained the first step which would both grant him the earth immunity pill and make him his disciple.

' By knocking on the wall three time a small c.h.e.s.t will appear, inside of it is a few earth embrace pills. Only take the necessary or you will fail my test. Not only will the pill grant you immunity to earth and protect those that you love it will also grant you immunity to poison and diseases.'

Rayne did as he was instructed, the light tentacle was still on him but it stopped restricting his movement. He knocked on the wall, causing a small part at the bottom to fall. He dragged a small box out of the hole and opened it. This was the same box that was blocking his special vision.
