The Lost Chronicles Of Pangea: Apocalypse

Chapter 21 - Arena (c): The Frost wolf Attacks

The frost wolf had a grey coat that was covered with streaks of pure white hair. The wolf was over nine feet tall, well above the average height of all the fighters in the arena. Its eyes were a pale piercing blue, it fangs were elongated, pushing out of its snarling maw in a manner that was not peculiar to normal wolves. The tips of its ears and tail were crystallized, which made its ears seem like horns and its tail like the stinger of a scorpion.

It was obvious this frost wolf had more weapons in it's arsenal than a normal wolf. Every time the wolf let out a breath of air, it released a stream of cold fog from its nostrils. It made for an Intimidating sight, but David was surprisingly very apathetic at its appearance after the first twenty seconds.

He was still very much afraid of the beast and the amount of damage if not outright death, it could cause. But David has had to fight a giant bat twice its size, not to mention he won. And he still had a vindictive evolved giant lizard running around somewhere, looking for an opportunity to take his head. It was a sudden change of character, but at that moment, David was not so threatened by the wolf's appearance. But he still needed to find a way to defeat the bloody thing.

The fourteen remaining fighters quickly huddled together with Lilith and David. They were all going to kill each other, but they were not stupid enough to make a move on a human, when that wolf, which had turned out to be a wild card remained on the battlefield.

No one needed to say it, but they all knew that if they wanted a chance to survive and kill each other later on, they needed to band together and fight this fuzzy overgrown wolf. Every man and a woman was needed to combat this wolf and the danger it posed to all of them.

The wolf crouched down a bit as it let out a growl that reverberated through the entire arena. David might not know much about fighting, or animals, but even he knew what position an animal took whenever it was preparing to pounce.

"Hey! Watch out..."

But David's warning came a little to late, as the wolf crossed the entire distance between them in on leap to land right in their middle. The wolf took a bite out of one of the fighters snapping him in two. The wolf immediately spit out his mangled body that was rapidly freezing at a rate visible to the n.a.k.e.d eye.

The sudden movement of the wolf had left a few people shocked as they all froze like a deer in head lights, those among them who were conscious enough had moved a few steps back, but there was not much space to retreat as their backs made contact with the gate behind them. The wolf turned it's body slightly as its fluffy tail with a crystallized tip came whistling through the air and pierced another fighter who was not able to raise his shield to defend himself on time.

David felt his warm blood fly through the air as it sprayed all over his face and those of a few other fighters. David felt the blood rapidly cool on his face, but what really made his blood run cold, was the fact that the person who was pierced was still alive hanging from the wolf's tail.

"Argh, help me!, help me please! No! No! Nooooo.....arck!"

It was like a scene from a horror movie. David watched as his body slowly froze from hanging on the tip of the wolf's tail. His wails and cries for help was completely ignored as everyone there watched with abject horror and terror at the sight before them. The spectators however screamed so loud the very ground beneath their feet rumbled.

"What a beautiful way to go everyone, I'm sure he's thanking us from heaven, or maybe hell. Or maybe oblivion, but either way we need more!, More I say, more!"

If anybody ever asked David if he knew what insanity really sounded like, he would most definitely say it was the host of this freakish execution. David would really like to leave an imprint on his face with his fist. Maybe then he might reboot the idiot's brain, and let him know the severity of his actions. Or David would not care and just beat the bastard to death, God knows he deserves it.

The wolf swung it's tail at them in a sweeping motion, Davies pupils shrunk in fright at the incoming furry whip. He watched Lilith scale the shoulder of one of the fighters and jump over the incoming tail, turning her body in an arc to slash at the furry appendage. But before David could find out the result of that venture, the tail filled his vision as he raised his shield to defend against it.

"Slam! Crash!"

That was the sound everyone heard when the wolfs tail slammed into David's shield, and whoever was unlucky enough to be in the path of the furry whip of destruction. David felt like he was hit by a truck, his body was thrown back against the gate so hard that David saw stars and was stunned for a moment. David however was thankful that the gate was so close by, if it was farther back and his throw had gained any momentum, he would be feeling a lot worse than dizzy.

David landed in a heap among the other fighters, he was lucky enough to not gain any injuries as they all landed in a heap of metal weapons and shields. One of the fighters however was not as lucky, as an incorrectly positioned spear had driven itself through his open mouth to come out of the back of his throat.

David heard the sound of vomiting next to him as one of the fighters lost their lunch at the grotesque way of death. David quickly scrambled to his feet. At that point he realized it was to much of a bad idea for all of them to be cl.u.s.tered together in the same place, it would give the damn wolf too big a target to follow.

David looked around a bit, and following Lilith's example he sheathed his gladius on his back. Apparently this suit they gave them had some sort of metallic properties as it seems to be able to hold their weapons in place. Then David turned to the guy who was impaled by his own spear, and pulled it out with a grunt.

However as he pulled it out, it was then he realized the guy was still alive, and was only slowly bleeding out as he hung from his spear. The other fighters looked at him with a surprised and horrified look on their faces. But David had no time to explain, he took the spear and drove it straight through the skull of the fighter shocking everyone in the arena. Then David turned to the rest and said.

"If you want to survive, then don't stand together in a group. And defending will not help, attack the wolf, go for is joints."

With his piece said David turned and made a beeline for the wolf that was screaming in pain and anger as it's tail was now only hanging connected to it by a tiny thread of flesh. It seems Lilith has been really busy.

David was not one for melee battles, but when it came down to it, David had a very good sense of battle. He could not use the terrain as an advantage, the entire platform beneath his feet was made of carved stone, and he knew even with how close those viewing seats looked liked, there would definitely be some sort of protection on them.

Non of them had their abilities, which meant all they could depend on was their natural body, and if strength was to be gauged by the individual body of each fighter here, then David would definitely be the weakest. But David liked to think he had experience with big monsters, which was a big lie of course. But that train of thought could at least serve as a way to comfort him, and give him the courage that he needed.

When David was ten feet away from the Wolf, he threw the spear in his hand straight for it's eyes. David might not have any of his guns with him, but he was still a guy with a frightening amount of accuracy whenever he chose to focus. The spear flew true and lodged into the right eye of the wolf. Because there was not much strength behind the throw, and the wolf probably had a higher defense than normal animals, the spear only lightly poked its eyeball and hung there for just a moment before falling to the ground.

But that was enough to cause irreparable damage to it's eye.

"ROOARRR!!"

The wolfs cry of pain shook David to his very bones as the beast raised one of its paws to cover its injured eyes while rapidly moving back. In the process of it moving back it stepped on one of the fighters standing behind it, with the claws on it's hind leg turning him to a pile of shredded meat before anybody could say hey. The body of the fighter rapidly froze, but since he was already dead no body else paid any attention to him again.

The wolf attempted to drop one of its paws so that it could use the other to cover its wounded eye. But as it dropped its right paw, one of the other fighters had already found his courage, and he swung the axe in his hands upwards with all of his strength, completely detaching it's paw from its limb.

The roar this time left David's ear ringing and his head pounding in pain. He stumbled a bit as the pain almost overwhelmed him, it took a significant amount of willpower for him to finally gain control over himself. However a scene more grotesque than expected, took place in the few seconds that David was blinded by pain.

The fighter who had sliced the wolves paw off, had been doused by a significant amount of the beast's blood. And by the look of things, it seems as if he had ingested the life giving liquid.

Under the gaze of everyone, ice crystals could be seen growing and creeping beneath the surface of his skin. The blood of the wolf seemed to be a crystalizing a freezing agent whenever it came into contact with the blood of any other living thing. David watched in horror as an ice crystal burst out of his c.h.e.s.t, he watched it expand and grow as it came out of his eyes, throat and ears, completely tearing and freezing his body. In mere moments all that was left of the fighter was a statue of ice like stalagmites and his shoes. He was gone for good.

As horrible as it looked, no body had any time to dwell on it as the wolf was now going on a rampage. After everyone saw the effect its blood had when coming in contact with organic material, they were a little careful in their dealings with the beast. But the wolf had no such qualms, it was badly hurt, and even though the wound was slowly crystalizing as the ice sealed it shut, the wolf was still in a lot of pain, and it needed to vent its frustration on someone else. And this time its chosen target was David.

"HOOWWWLLLL!!"

"Oh come on!, I'm not the only one here for Christ sakes, why is it always me."

And with his disp.l.e.a.s.u.r.e expressed, David turned around and made a run for it, going straight for the closed gate with the angry nine foot giant wolf in tow.
