The Lost Chronicles Of Pangea: Apocalypse

Chapter 23 - Arena (e): The Birth Of A Monster

"And now ladies and gentlemen, the final act of our wondrous show. Mmmhmmm. Its quite a pity that all this fun has to come to an end, but it's our policy to give you all a blast and one heck of a time. So I say this to the fighters, those of you who still has a teammate.....lucky you. As for those of you that don't have a teammate well I guess that's to bad for you.

You could pull the ultimate offset and win of course, but if not, well I wish you a safe trip to the underworld. And now you all better be dead in ten minutes, or you all die. Start the countdown."

As soon as he finished speaking, and hour glass appeared above their heads. It was holographic, but for each fighter that was left in the arena, there was a single hour glass over their head. Of the eighteen fighters that first came into this arena, nine were dead. And only nine were left. Of the nine remaining there were only three teams intact, including David and Lilith.

The other three odd fighters were strictly on their own, so they decided to join forces. And then they attacked, but for some reason they all came for them instead. David was no fool, he knew how much both he and Lilith stood out in the fight against the frost wolf. The other fighters would have probably come to the conclusion, that they were a much more dangerous bunch than the others, and it would be in their best interests to take them out of the picture.

David knew there was nothing he could do, but move forward, so he and Lilith started running for the seven other enemies they had to face. Their sudden course of action shocked them a but, but only for a moment. It was obvious the fighters and many of the spectators expected both David and Lilith to buckle under the pressure of the other fighters, after all they were outnumbered.

But the fact that both of them would rather go down swinging rather than find an alternate way to survive cemented their image as the underdogs for everyone in the arena. But underdogs never win on Pangea, the very idea of an underdog was nothing short of a fairy tale, and a fairy tale that David did not believe in. He would much rather be a tyrant in this story, because as far as reality is concerned there was no such thing as the good guys, only guys with power or the will to take it.

David angled his body and sent all the force in his body through his right hand as he flung the spear he was holding.

The spear picked up such an astonishing momentum, but what really surprised everyone was his target. David did not aim for the smallest, or the weakest in this group, he aimed for the biggest. And as none of them were expecting such a move from him, his current target already had a hole punched through his throat with a spear. There was shock, and fear and disbelief written all over his gaze. David was sure this guy never imagined he would die like this, to die in a cage, fighting other people like a dog, and even worse to die at the hands of a kid that did not look a day over twenty.

With his aggrieved expression he fell forward, further pushing the spear through his throat when its shaft touched the stone platform. He hit the ground with a thud, and the spear sticking out of his throat like a flag completely coated in blood. His partner screamed in agony as he rushed at David with a club in hand. But before he could take two steps, a shield whistled through the air to accurately hit him on the head.

The guy fell down immediately with a dent to his skull, while his body began to convulse and shake like a chicken that lost its head. David smirked at Lilith's decisiveness and her extreme talent in killing.

A team just lost their lives barely a minute into the fight, and the hour glass over their heads faded away. it made the remaining five fighters rethink the strategy of attacking both Lilith and David together. Because as of this moment, those two released a pressure that was equal if not greater than the giant wolf they just killed about five minutes ago. But David and Lilith would not give them a chance to retreat. As David ran past the body of the man he just killed, he pulled the bloodied spear out with a squelch and reinforced his grip.

The other five had huddled together and raised the shields to create a defense against David and Lilith. David scrunched his eyebrows in annoyance, as he did not have a clear shot at this other fighters.

But suddenly he felt a whoosh beside him as Lilith shot forward with her shield in hand. Her speed was terrifying, when she moved all David could see was a blur. She stopped when she was ten feet away from the fighters and little over ten feet away from David too. She crouched down and placed the shield over her shoulder waiting for David to use it as a boost.

David did not disappoint as he stepped on top of the shield and Lilith pushed him up with a significant amount of strength. David went so high, that he got to a point where the yellow barrier began. The barrier appeared and began to glow a fierce yellow as David reached a height that would have been impossible to reach with his ordinary body. And as he was coming down, almost scared out of his mind by how close to death he almost was, when he almost came in contact with that barrier. David threw the spear. The blood coating the spear gave it an extra amount of force as it shot out of David's hands like a bullet, and down it went through the eye of another fighter.

His sudden death shocked the next fighter beside him so much that he stumbled, leaving a big gap in their shield wall. Lilith capitalized on that opening and slammed her shield on the head of another fighter. What happened next would have won an award for best kill of the day as the fighter's head, directly exploded into bits of blood, bone, brain and gore. Lilith was the strongest person here, and she just showed why she was to be feared.

Lilith angled her shield so that the edge would lie over her arm as she used it like a dagger or sword. The fighter who had stumbled previously had that shield delivered to his throat, and with an audible crunch that even the whole arena could hear, Lilith crushed his windpipe to pieces. He fell down clutching his throat in pain and horror as he tried to breath. He would be dead soon, and even if did not die on time, he was no longer a threat.

David came down from his jump with a roll, and came to stand beside Lilith as they faced the remaining two fighter. Theis guys were a team just like them, so a lot if people expected a rather juicy fight. David pulled his Gladius from behind his back, making it a slow as possible as a metallic sound rang throughout the arena. David wanted to be intimidating, and it was working perfectly. The other team were shaking fiercely in fright, Lilith and David looked liked the keepers of the very gates of hell itself. They were not just frightened, they were terrified.

David did not notice, but during the course of this entire fight there was a smile hanging at the edge of his lips. Even a blind man could see that this young man enjoyed the carnage he just caused. The feeling of taking a life had given him a kind of sick and twisted p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e. David might not have thought anything was wrong, but Lilith could see it, and deep within her eyes, she was alarmed by this recent development, but at the moment there was nothing she could do about it.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it's now down to our final four,... oh I can fe...…"

David did not let the host finish whatever it is he had to say as he threw his gladius straight for the face of one of the fighters. He never saw it coming, nobody did. The sword sliced into his face and skull, lodging there like a bizarre piece of art. And while his partner was distracted David had already pulled Lilith's sword from her back and marched up to the last fighter. The fighter looked up in time to see David coming for him, and he dropped his weapons in hopelessness and began to beg.

"Please! I beg you please don't kill me, I don't want to die. I have a son, and my brother the one who just died has a pregnant wife. Please let me go I won't tell anybody about what happened here. Please....please! No! No! Please! Arck!! Wahhh!!"

David did not hesitate one bit. It was almost as if every plea that this man had given to him had fallen on deaf ears. David took his life without remorse and to the silence of the entire arena. After all apart from Lilith who was a woman, he was the weakest person on the platform, and even then Lilith turned out to be the strongest. And then the crowd went wild as they screamed in reckless abandon, they loved him, loved his bloodthirsty nature and how merciless he was.

Then David looked at Lilith with a smile on his face, hoping they could celebrate together about escaping death. But what he saw on her face completely wiped the smile off his. Disappointment, shame and disgust. David and Lilith might not have known each other for a very long time, but they have survived a lot of things together. That look on her face cut him to the core, he couldn't understand why. But then he realized what he had done, all he had to do was look at the carnage he had caused and everything became clear to him.

He had killed, and to make matters worse he was not just good at it, he loved it. This was a part of him he did not recognize, did it belong to David of Earth, or David of Pangea. But there was no answer, his head was silent and his heart was in turmoil. This was...….he was terrifying, a killer without remorse, a monster.

"What have I done?, Oh sweet Jesus what have I done. God no! No!"

He was cracking and breaking under the weight of his guilt, his tears were pouring down and his head was pounding harder than ever. The whole arena was silent as they watched this display, none of them knew how to reconcile the fact that the ferocious killer they bore witness to a minute ago, was now nothing but a crying child.

David felt her hug him, she held him tight, anchoring him to the earth and to herself. And just before David's vision went white with pain and he passed out due to the intense pain from the energy surge and his evolving body, he heard her whisper to him.

"Still your heart David. You had no choice, and you're not a monster. It's going to be fine, you're not alone, I won't let you ever be alone. I promise."

At that moment they never knew, that the sparks of a love so powerful was born on that platform, it was born on the destruction of innocent lives to whims of insane deviants. But that love was not born alone, along with it, was born a monster destined to shake the very foundations of the universe itself. And to be honest, there was nothing more terrifying than a monster in love.
