The Lost Chronicles Of Pangea: Apocalypse

Chapter 47 - David vs The Evil Dead (iv): A Dungeon

The feeling of a blade slicing through flesh was somewhat nerve wracking, and for zombies, it was even more so. Even though the zombies left were no longer much, David was still reeling from Vidi's previous attack, the fact that his ears were ringing and his head was pounding, made everything extremely difficult for him.

But he was able to push on, after all his opponents were just ordinary zombies, and apart form their numbers, there was nothing really dangerous about them. They were slow, brittle, and weak. In no time at all, David was able to cut down the last zombie. He had spent quite a significant amount of time in the tunnel, but he had fun, relatively.

He turned to look back at the piles upon piles of corpses he had left in his wake, of course hid work was not perfect, as he could see some of them still moving their bodies and attaching lost limbs. David could do nothing but shake his head in frustration, after all; this was magic, and that particular brand of power never followed common logic. It was very annoying.

But when David turned to look at the wooden door, he was surprised by the amount if bones he had to walk over to get to it. There was no way in hell that this bones were kept here by the military just for show, it was quite unsettling, but it made no sense. But these days, nothing ever really made sense, and that was nobody's fault but nature.

David made his way towards the door, taking care to step carefully over the bones, so that he would not set off any traps or alarms. But he should have reconsidered careful steps when he had a hulking animal the size of a sofa with him. Vidi had no idea what the meaning of the careful or sneak meant. With every step the huge tortoise took, there was audible crunch that just seemed to reverberate through the tunnel. David turned to look at him and said.

"can't you be a little more quiet and careful. You're going to get us killed!!"

Vidi on the other hand looked at him as if David was nothing but an unimportant piece of trash, and then proceeded to take the biggest step that he could possibly could in spite of David, while thinking. 'who the hell does he think he is, I will step where I want, when I want, and however I want humph!'.

At first it was not the sound of Vidi crushing through ten inches of bone with his rather powerful stomp, it was the audible click that came next, and with was the shower of metal bolts that somehow just fell from a rock ceiling with no opening. Somehow David's danger sense kicked in, he saw every bolt before they made contact, a d knew exactly where they were going to land.

He pushed his body to the limit and threw himself forward hoping to escape the hail of metal that was sure to poke him full of holes. But his senses aside, his agility was the weakest stat he had, and it was almost too late for him.

He was able to escape, but not completely, however some sort of lucky streak seems to have been activated, as whatever bolts that actually touched him, had only left shallow scratches on his shoulder, t.h.i.g.hs and calf.

David looked at the trajectory of the bolts and realized how lucky he had been, it was as if the bolts outlined his entire body structure as he was laying down on a pile of bones. It was strange, but David was very thankful for it. Vidi had redrawn his head and limbs back into the confines of his shell at the first sign of trouble. And when everything was over he solemnly pushed his head out the shell and gave David a look as if to say 'what.'

David was pissed, but he had no actual idea how to deal with this guy. He felt the urge to just run over and throw him around, but with his current strength that was an impossible venture, so David did the next best thing...… the silent treatment. With a rather powerful glare, one that David would consider one of his best, he huffed and turned his head away. Putting his focus back to the task at hand. He heard Vidi make sounds indignantly, and then stomp his foot down again in anger.

"CLICK!!"

"Oh f.u.c.k!"

"SHIINNNGGG!!"

David moved, more by instinct than anything else, as he set himself in a ballerina pose. One of his hands were spread wide, his right leg was balanced on the knee of the left, his c.h.e.s.t and back were pushed forward, and his head was turned sideways to the left. Spikes?, spears?, poles?. Whatever they were, there was thousands upon thousands of them in the cave, and they were so closely placed together that it was nothing short of impossible to dodge them.

The spikes came from beneath the floor as opposed to the metal bolts that came from the ceiling. David could feel his body precariously leaning on them, as his rather awkward pose had save him from certain doom. David was very, very angry at the moment. But he could not just help but to thank God for his pitiful life. Should he get the chance to live this tunnel alive, he was going straight to the first church he see's to give a testimony and sow a seed.

Except of course there were no churches on Pangea, so maybe a temple or something. David had to stay like that for another twenty minutes before the spikes retracted back into the ground, just as suddenly as they appeared. David exhausted from holding such a pose for quite sometime fell on his a.s.s, and carelessly laid down in the bone covered ground, not giving a damn for whatever happens next.

As he was catching his breath, the reason for his previous two misfortunes came over, and attempted to apologize, but David was having none of it as he turned his head sideways, still choosing to ignore the tortoise.

Between the two of them, they would see who was more arrogant and stubborn today, 'the stupid tortoise and his stupid head, with his stupid shell and his stupid face....he tried to kill me!'

And David turned hoping to deliver a hefty slap to the face of the crazy and bratty animal. For the first two seconds all was well, as David could not wait for his hand to give Vidi his just due, a very good slap to the face. That is until.

"OWWWWW!!! F.U.C.K!, F.U.C.K!, F.U.C.K!, F.U.C.K! MY HAND!"

Note to self, don't ever slap the scale covered face of a tortoise with a defense strong enough to withstand the explosion from a tank's shell. It hurts, it hurts a lot. David swore under his breath as he clutched his throbbing hand, throwing all manner of glares and a few finger gestures that would be considered rude and improper. Vidi on the other hand looked at David as if he was saying 'what did I do'.

The innocent look he had on his face sent David into even more of a frenzy and cursing galore as he imagined a variety of ways that tortoise soup could be prepared. His angry tirade went on for about ten minutes, then he suddenly got up, looked around to make sure no one was watching then picked his battle blade and made his way over the floor of bones as he headed towards the strange wooden door.

Vidi despite being a tortoise had his jaw opened completely surprised at the sudden turn of events. It was to his knowledge that he had tried to annoy David on purpose, of course he didn't think this place would be booby trapped to the brim. And when David ignored him, he wanted to annoy him by making more noise, but then there was more booby traps, and this next one hurt a lot. The spears could not penetrate his shell, but the impact alone rattled his brain and his entire body.

And now David was ignoring him again, maybe he should stomp his feet on the ground again, he wondered what sort of trap would come out to his time. David was not paying any attention to his beautiful self, and he did not like that. Besides who was going to blame him for misbehaving, he was only a kid, no one ever blames the kid. But maybe it's best to play it safe, that one spear had hit to close to the forbidden fruit of the back gate.

And so Vidi followed behind David, also carefully picking his steps. To an onlooker this would be very comical, tortoises were naturally slow and quiet animals, but this dude had way longer legs and feet that were more gecko than tortoise. He was built for speed, even with his bulk. But watching him awkwardly move slowly, made him look like a lizard that's learning to use all eight legs for the first time.

David now had an idea why there was so much bones in here, it was probably to prevent anybody from springing the traps placed here. But why would they use the corpses of people, none of the cities were close by, and for this much amount of people to go missing, somebody would have seen or said something. It just did not make any sense, if this really was a military base, there wouldn't take measures like this, unless of course the Division had something to do with this.

David knew the military sometimes played dirty, very, very dirty. The fact that there's a secret Division of dark magic users should be more than enough proof. However this was too much a stretch even for them, and he doubted that they went digging graves for this ridiculous amount of bones.

It was baffling, and David tried to look closer at the bones as he moved towards the door. They were old, and some of them still had pieces of decayed clothes and flesh on them. Then David noticed something, there was eyeball just underneath his feet, exactly two feet from the door.

He almost fell back in shock until he remembered he had to be careful or there would be consequences, really painful if not outright death consequences. He bent down and moved a few bones aside until the eye and the head it was still attached to was exposed.

It was another zombie, but unlike the others this one was older, its skin was gray and leathery, it was then that David realized the military did not just get bodies to cover the triggers of the traps, that would be stupid and completely impractical, this was the military for God's sake. There were all professional and tactical about their shit. Which meant, they were either not the first people here, or the people they sent used a different approach.

And David bet his balls(maybe not) that the division got here first. They encountered a prior wave of zombies, and took them down, then they used them to cover the triggers for the traps, effectively disabling any scenario of them getting hurt. It was a rather simple plan, but completely ingenious in it's own right. And after they were done getting what they wanted, they left, and created new zombies in the process to protect whatever was left here.

So which meant that the only question left was whether the Division did this when they were still with the military, or after they left. The answer to that question brought up all sort of problems that David would rather not think about. But it also came with a knowledge that this place was a real honest to God dungeon. Places like this had become extinct or completely cleared from Pangea thousands of years ago. The technological age sent a lot of things extinct, and one of them were dungeons and the monsters within them.

David moved towards the door now wary about what was to come. From his memories he knew dungeons were existences not to be trifled with, the traps were just the least of the dangers they were capable causing or creating, during the era of their existence, they gave great rewards, but also great danger.

David looked at the rather normal looking wooden door, there was no handle of any sort, and the door just looks as if it was just placed on the face of a rock, or to be more exact like it was part of the rock wall. David could not find any hinges, it was just rock-door-rock.

He placed his hands on the door and it lit up in a bright flash of golden light. Then words appeared on its surface.

I COME AT THE BEGINNING.

I COME AT THE END.

I TAKE WHAT'S EXPECTED

I TAKE WHAT'S NOT

WHEN I TAKE I LEAVE YOU HOLLOW

WHEN I TAKE I LEAVE YOU EMPTY

WHEN I TAKE I LEAVE YOU BROKEN.

WHAT AM I?

"Err.... What?"
