The Maniacal General With His Crazy System

Chapter 55 - Saying bye whilst no one is looking

A smirk slowly appeared on Averill's face as he gazed at Harleen before responding slowly. "I can't deny that. Yes, they are on my side for now." Averill didn't blink or anything as his sharp eyes glared into Harleen's eyes. "And for your earlier question, Jack is someone who calls himself Joker, whereas Selina calls herself Catwoman."

The eyebrows of Harleen shot up, she had never thought that the crazy Joker and the burglar Catwoman would work for anyone from what she had read upon them. But Harleen quickly came to a conclusion. "You. You gave them an ultimatum, didn't you?" 'From what I can tell, everything is under Averill's plan. He could have killed the Justice League members whenever he wanted, but he didn't do so. He brought Catwoman and Joker into his side, but for what reason?'

As Harleen was deep in her own thoughts, Averill turned his head towards the window and spoke in a soothing voice. "I only needed to do that for Selina. Jack was quite more willing to follow my commands as long as his own goals could also be accomplished." Averill didn't bother hiding anything from Harleen, as since the moment he brought in Harleen to his home, he had regarded her as his own chess piece that could be useful.

But Averill also knew one thing about the chess piece whose name is Harleen, that Harleen would need enough information and detail to begin working. This was one of the reasons Averill was telling Harleen about everything without any second thought about hiding anything.

And he wasn't afraid that Harleen would run away or tell anyone the information he had told her. Because he had her under his aura, anything she does or says will be known by him.

"But… that doesn't make any sense." Harleen shook her head as she felt a headache appearing. In her view, no one would be able to change the psychopathic mind of Joker. If Averill had forced them with brute force, then she wouldn't have any second thought about it. "But Joker would never agree that easily to such things! Are you sure that he is on your side and not aiming for your life when you least expect it?" Even if Harleen knew how strong Averill was, Joker wasn't just any normal human being.

"Let me ask you one thing, Harleen Quinzel." Averill's soothing voice could no longer be heard, his voice wasn't cold nor mocking, it was an emotionless voice that was way scarier than any other tones he had used before.

Harleen, Laura and even Saitama flinched when they heard Averill's unemotional voice.

"If you had one wish, and that specific wish was something that you knew you could never accomplish by yourself. Would you or would you not agree to do anything and everything in order to accomplish that one wish?" Averill slowly turned his gaze towards Harleen, but his eyes didn't stop on her, he also gazed at Saitama and Laura in turn. There was a small smile apparent on Averill's face, his eyes weren't sharply gazing at them either, just a neutral expression that didn't express too many emotions.

Saitama went lost into his own thoughts and dreams. 'I… I only wanted to never feel helpless any longer… I was alone for so many years, with no parents or friends, the strength I got was the only thing that calmed my mind. But even when I had that strength, I was still feeling lonely and helpless, no family nor friends…'

Even Laura went into her own thoughts. 'What am I? Am I man-made or am I a normal person? I never knew my father and my mother wasn't even able to help me. I was lost in the pain that surrounded my entire life. That was until I met the light after the long dark tunnel.' Laura had Averill in her gaze as she continued thinking. 'He reached out his hand to me, he saved me. I only had one wish, and that was to escape the painful and dark life I lived. And Averill was the one who took me in and showed me so much more.'

Whilst Laura and Saitama were lost in their own thoughts and memories, Harleen was thinking about something else. 'Averill isn't wrong… If someone had one wish that they could never achieve, they would give their everything to that one person who could help them. They wouldn't care about their own lives any longer, only to support the one person that could accomplish their wishes. Joker, is the first clear one in my eyes. But, aren't Laura and Saitama nearing that point too? How about me? What do I d.e.s.i.r.e? What are my wishes?' Harleen was also deep in her own thoughts as she subconsciously gazed at Averill as her heart began beating faster.

"The three of you can rest for now. I will be away for the next few days until their next attack. Remember what I mentioned, Laura and Saitama; heavily injure them, but do not kill them." Averill's voice was once soothing to their ears and clear to hear.

Before Laura, Saitama and Harleen could fully comprehend what Averill had said, they couldn't see him any longer, he had vanished into thin air.

"NOoOooo!" Saitama yelled out like a maniac as he ran towards the window. "Come back Averill! Don't leave us for a few days!!! I'll die of hunger!!!"

*Bang!*

An explosive booming sound could be heard as Saitama was kicked through the window and onto the ground like a meteor.

Laura had appeared on the previous spot where Saitama stood, she coldly gazed at Saitama. "What kind of rare pet are you? Go buy some food in a restaurant or something if you are hungry!" Laura could barely control her anger in front of Saitama due to his sheer stupidity.
