The Maniacal General With His Crazy System

Chapter 86 - Never will I fail

Averill continued smiling weirdly as he retracted his aura whilst shaking his head.

[Host, the chances of succeeding the Mission has become less…] The System spoke in a quiet yet monotone voice, it never wished for its Host to fail a mission it gave out, but the nearer the required time to complete the mission came, the less of a chance the System saw of it actually being achievable.

"Ahaha, are you really sure that I will fail my mission, System?" Averill had a hint of playfulness in his soothing voice as he asked the System back.

[…] The System wasn't able to respond to Averill, no matter how much it tried to calculate, the less of a chance it came as an conclusion for Averill to be able to complete the mission it had given a while back. And the more the System thought of the punishment Averill would receive if he failed it, the less happy the System became. Because if Averill failed the mission, he would lose an arm permanently.

An eyebrow of Averill went slightly up as he could sense that the System wanted to say something about the failure chance of the mission he had taken. But it didn't matter to Averill because he would not fail the mission. He flickered his wrist slightly as a portal was made in front of him, he went through it which sent him back to his home, in the same room of where Harleen was staying in.

Whilst Averill went back, the System was still uncomfortable. Because with how things are going now, Averill will fail the mission no matter what. If Averill was how he was earlier today, there would be no chance for him to fail the mission. But due to the second memory gain he had gotten today, the System concluded that Averill has a 99% chance to fail the mission.

This was a good enough reason for the System to act on its own within reasons to help Averill. It began speaking, repeating the mission he had given Averill a while back, but this time, two people could hear it speak, and none of them were Averill…

[Host, a mission has appeared. The detail of the mission is to allow Saitama and Laura to fight against Spectre in this Universe without the Host interfering in the battle. If the Host interferes in the battle in any kind of way, the mission will be failed. Rewards and punishments will be known if Host accepts the mission.]

[The Host has accepted the Mission. If Host accomplishes the Mission, Host will receive a random Universe. If Host fails to accomplish the Mission, the punishment will be the loss of an arm permanently.]

Two people had just heard the System speak out the details of the mission Averill had taken. These two persons were Laura and Saitama.

Saitama stood still as he heard the System speak the detail of the mission Averill had taken, he didn't know why the System told him too, but there had to be a reason.

It was the same for Laura, but she didn't stop dashing through the Universe. Yet her focus now was on the System's voice that was inside of her head.

[The reason I am telling the two of you about Host's mission is due to that I believe that Host will interfere in the battle between the two of you and Phantom. As of right now, the two of you won't be able to win against Phantom, and with how Host is right now, Host would interfere to stop Phantom from killing the two of you.] The System concluded with his conclusion to Laura and Saitama, because if it can't speak reasons with its Host, then it will make a path for the mission to be successful.

'Are you joking with me, System?! Are you saying that even after all of this training that I've done, I am not a match for Phantom?' Saitama wasn't happy at all to know that he would most likely be defeated by Phantom and in the same battle that Averill would save him and lose his arm to do that…

'Averill mentioned that he would not save us if he lost against Phantom, I am prepared to face my death if I lose, I will not accept Averill's interference in the upcoming battle.' Laura replied in a slightly cold tone.

[Host managed to obtain more memories of the previous life Host has lived. With that memory, Host is now more willing to not see the two of you die and suffer from the consequences.]

'Then, do you have any way to give us a better chance to defeat Phantom, so Averill won't interfere in the battle?' Laura was indeed clever, she had no reason to discuss with the System that she didn't want Averill's help. Because Laura knew one thing for sure, that the System Averill had was one that would help Averill in any way if it could.

[…]

And as the System spoke with Laura and Saitama, Averill was now laying on the couch as he gazed towards the ceiling which was made out of marble.

"Averill, you should have noticed too, that you have slightly changed after watching the second memory of your past life… Why do you think you are slowly changing after watching the memory, and do you think it's a bad or a good thing?" Harleen asked as she was very curious of how Averill would react after getting a piece of memory that was slightly different to how as a person he was portraying himself as.

Averill's gaze didn't move a single bit when he heard her question, not a single muscle on his face moved either. He was relaxed when he heard her answer because he already had those thoughts previously. "My answer to you is quite simple, Harleen. I am seeing my own past for a reason, not because I feel like it would benefit me, but because I want to understand. I want to understand what kind of person I am."

"From the memories I have received so far, I have no regard for killing people or to be the bad person in the world. Yet it seems like I do have affection for those who follows me, who are willing to take the same path as me. The question has always been and will always be, what kind of person am I, Harleen? Am I someone that has no emotions and thoughts about others, a killing machine? Or, is there a chance that I might be a person that acts because I want to accomplish something for not only myself, but those who follows me too." Averill spoke in a clear yet soothing voice as he cleared his own thoughts out to Harleen.

Yet even whilst Averill was speaking in a relaxed, soothing voice and that he had his usual weird smile on his face, his red sharp eyes were still sharp as ever…
