Chapter 20 - The Unexpected Meeting In The Plains

After a peaceful night with no attacks, Bella woke me just as the sun was rising above the horizon. I desperately wanted to go back to sleep, but she kept poking me in the ribs with a stick and forced me to get up. Once I finally opened my eyes, I saw why she was so adamant about waking me up. She had made breakfast.

The meal consisted of some roasted meat and cooked vegetables we had brought with us. Food was always a good way to wake up. I thanked her for making the meal, and we instantly dug in. Almost as soon as we started, we were done. I let out a long sigh and just relaxed for a moment, before jumping to my feet.

While Bella cleaned the utensils we had used for eating, I started taking down the tent. It was quite simple to my surprise. The frame was like an umbrella. I just needed to take the cloth off, and pull down on a piece of metal connected to the center pole. All the other ones would fold up, and that was it. Best tent ever. When I lived on Earth, I had gone camping a few times, but it always took forever to set up a tent. I really liked this one.

Anyway, we finished packing up and set out toward the village that was our destination for today. We descended the hill we had set camp on and continued our way across the grassy plains. Before we left Desil, I was worried about tics in the grass, but when I thought about it, I'd yet to see a bug, even a fly a since coming to this world. When I asked around in Desil, I found out that it was only in the big cities where monsters never came close, that you could find bugs. It seems most monsters could kill bugs just by living. There was something about monsters that naturally killed bugs, and I was grateful for that.

A few hours into our second day of travel, Presence Detection picked up a strange signal. Whatever it was, it was staying still and seemed to be injured. I looked at Bella and she nodded in agreement. We would check it out.

Once we got closer, I noticed a small clearing in the grass up ahead, right where the presence was coming from. Bella wielded her staff and I unsheathed my sword as we crept closer. We bent down so we were level with the grass, making it harder for others to notice us.

We finally got to the clearing and to my surprise there was a man passed out in the clearing. From our side, he appeared to just be sleeping, but when I got closer, I saw he was bleeding from his shoulder and upper back.

I quickly took off the bag from my back and took out a potion of healing and quickly poured it over the man's injuries. Before our eyes, his injuries closed up. It was creepy to watch. His skin crawled like it was alive and slowly connected with itself. The blood that had hardened around the injury slowly peeled off and the raw skin quickly changed to a healthy color.

Bella and I decided to stay a bit and find out what kind of man he was, so we took out our pot and started making a small fire so we could cook lunch. We made the clearing where we had found the man a bit larger but cutting down the grass, and found some stones to surround the fire with so the entire plains didn't catch on fire. It was my turn to prepare the meal, so Bella was on watch to make sure nothing came near while I was cooking.

An hour later, we had a nicely seasoned meat roast with some minced vegetables mixed together, somewhat like a salad without dressing. We had both just started eating when the man finally twitched. He had probably smelled the delicious scent of the roasted meat. We cautiously raised our weapons and I tried talking to the man.

"Hey. Um, sir. What happened here?" I lightly called out to the man who was finally trying to sit up. It was then he noticed us. His eyes widened at us for a moment, until my words registered in his brain.

In a hoarse voice he said, "Do have some water? I'd appreciate it if you could lend me some." I was surprised at how dry his voice sounded and took out a cup while Bella kept an eye on him. He hadn't answered my question so we were just being safe.

I used water magic to fill the cup, and passed it over to him. He greedily drank the water and let out a refreshed sigh once he was done. "Sorry for not answering your question right away. My name is Tenda Jovian, and I'm an adventurer, rank B. As for what happened here, I'm not sure myself. The last thing I remember was sensing something rushing at me very quickly through Presence Detection, and then I woke up to you two eating next to me." Tenda explained his situation as he took out his ID Card and Status Card from a pocket of his pants to prove his identity.

It seemed most people used their ID Card as proof of their name, while the Status Card was just used as proof of being an adventurer. It made sense, since the Status Card didn't show any information without opening the overlay.

"Wait, are you THE Tenda Jovian, the one who has the alias of Flamehand?!?" Bella jumped up like a little child after hearing his name. I nearly laughed out loud at that, but stopped myself before she noticed.

"Yes, that would be me." Tenda readily admitted to her question.

"We are headed to the nearby village. Would you like to come with us?" Bella asked, clearly hoping he would join us.

"That's perfect. I was on my way to Gryffon before I was attacked anyway. If you are willing to have me along, I'd greatly appreciate it." He replied with a smile.

For an adventurer ranked B, he was a nice guy. I didn't get the feeling that he was one of those adventurers that would pick on others just because he had a higher rank.

In the end, Tenda joined us on our way to the village. To pass the time, Bella asked him to tell us stories of his adventures, which he accepted after a bit of prodding. He was quite the adventurer in all honesty. The fact that he had an alias should have been proof enough of that, but I didn't know how that worked until he explained how he was named Flamehand.

Many hours later, the village entered our vision. It was already dark as we entered the village of Gryffon.
