Xing Lie’s sentence reminded me: I planned to dig a hole and plant myself back (into the ground).

He was going to settle down and get married with a girl. At that time, there would be no one who wanted me. It was too hard to be a human. I was better off going back to being a tree.

“You’re sitting in meditation here?” Xing Lie crouched beside me and asked me with a smile.

I hugged my knees and changed direction, continuing to execute my plan to turn into a tree.

Before I dug a hole, I had to turn myself back into a wutong tree.1

“Why haven’t you been speaking these days?” Xing Lie pulled my arm, forcibly pulling me in front of him, “I’m going to go to work tomorrow. You won’t be able to see me for another week.”

I struggled with all my might and pulled my arm out of his grasp.

If I wouldn’t see him, then I wouldn’t see him. After I turned into a tree, I wouldn’t be able to see Xing Lie anymore.

As I thought about this, I felt a little miserable. My nose began to run and I sniffled.

“Why’re you crying?” Xing Lie simply held me by the waist and carried me in his arms2,  “Are you scared because of yesterday?”

I wriggled in his arms, “Don’t touch me!”

Xing Lie threw me at the sofa, “Staying out on the balcony in the cold wind during the winter, you’ve caught a cold.”

“I am a tree”, I told him seriously, “I’m not afraid of the cold.”

“Sure you aren’t3,” Xing Lie bent his waist and pinched my face, “You kept getting all up in my space last night when we were sleeping. Say, wasn’t it because you were cold?”

My face heated up. I instantly had no words to say.

What did he mean I “kept getting all up in his space”? I just…I just leaned towards his side, that was all.

“Your face is red again, like a girl.” Xing Lie laughed at me.

“I’m not a girl,” I smacked his hand away, “I know, you went out to eat with a girl!”

“Who told you not to go when I called you to,” Xing Lie sat beside me, “now you’re in a bad mood about it with me?”

I hit him with a bolster, so angry I glared at him, “You’re eating with a girl, what am I going there for!”

Xing Lie caught my wrist and pressed me down against the sofa, “Little tree spirit, you don’t get it. That was me having a meal as an act of courtesy, since we just met for the first time.4 Neither of us are that familiar with the other. It’s very awkward when there aren’t a lot of people.”

“Then did you actually not want to go?” Hope rose in my heart. I asked him carefully and cautiously.

“Well, it’s not like I didn’t want to go,” Xing Lie scratched the side of his face, seeming to be slightly self-conscious, “I’m not that young anymore, and I want to find a girlfriend…”

“You just want to let the girl give birth to kids for you!” I said in a rage.

The expression on Xing Lie’s face dropped5, “What the heck?”

“Then why do you like girls?” I asked.

“Why can’t I get through to you?” Xing Lie let go of me, “Forget it, I’m not going to talk to you about it anymore.”

I climbed up from the sofa and went back to hole myself up on my balcony.

Xing Lie didn’t forcibly carry me back into the apartment. I felt a little miserable in my heart, and I discreetly rubbed my eyes.

Suddenly, there was a weight on my shoulders. Xing Lie’s arms, carrying a woolen blanket, circled me from the front and wrapped me up completely.

“Little tree spirit,” Xing Lie sat beside me, tilted his head, and asked me, “Are you worried that I won’t want you anymore when I settle down and get married?”

I blinked. After a moment, I obediently nodded.

That was one of the reasons. I was worried that Xing Lie wouldn’t want me, and I didn’t want him to settle down and marry a girl.

“Older Brother will tell you what I think,” Xing Lie’s long arm stretched out, grabbing my shoulder and pulling me into his embrace, “You can depend on me, but you can’t rely on me. At this time, you’ve just turned human and you’re still getting used to this society. I will strive to take care of you to the best of my ability. But everyone is an independent entity. In the future, you will have to live by yourself.”

‘In the future, you will have to live by yourself.’

I was stupefied by what I had heard.

I had waited for Xing Lie for so long until I turned into a human to come find him, yet he told me that I had to live by myself in the future.

What was the point of me being a human? I was much better off being a tree.

Xing Lie proceeded to say some other things. Most likely about the girl, I thought, as my brain continued to buzz.

The more I heard, the more miserable I felt.

Tepid drops of water flowed from my eyes. I know that these were tears.

Humans only cried when they felt sad.

“Xing Lie,” I sobbed, only feeling that I had drenched the woolen blanket with my tears, “dig a pit and plant me back (into the ground).”

Xing Lie wiped away the tears that streamed down my face with his large hand, exclaiming in surprise, “Damn, these tears of yours are like natural water. How are you able to cry so much?6”

I cried and he didn’t console me. Instead, he marveled at it like he had seen something that was entertaining.

I was sad and angry, straight-up opening my mouth and bawling, “I’m not going to be human anymore!”
