It startled Ryan to see Lumi’s expression.
Was he exposed?
If so, this wife of his was too smart.
And he would not pretend anymore.
“Yes, I am a rich kid. My family is super rich. My pocket money is enough to buy a hundred companies like yours. No one has more money than if I may say so,” he said after taking a deep breath.
He had wanted to keep a low profile at first. But since he had been exposed, he might well confess. Lumi was his wife, and she would know this secret, eventually.
Lumi looked at him and his serious expression for three seconds and chuckled. “You are a rich kid? Stop kidding me. But I am still surprised that you have actually gotten a rich classmate to invest in the company. I would like to invite your classmates for a meal later to say my thank you.”
She did not believe it?
He rubbed his nose in frustration. He was telling the truth, for God’s sake.
The Fletcher family was the most powerful family on Earth, and he was a direct descendant of it. Ryan had an elder brother. However, this elder brother of his was too guileless to lead the family. Therefore, his grandpa said long ago that his elder brother was unfit to lead the family.
As a result, Ryan became the only heir of the Fetcher family as a matter of course.
Fifty-billion-dollar pocket money was a temporary limit.
He was telling the truth, yet she did not believe him.
Fine.
He would continue to pretend to be poor.
“Stop daydreaming already. Now that the company has solved its funding problem, I can now accompany you to check out the clothes. But first thing first, don’t spend over ten thousand dollars. We might have overcome the difficulties for now, but we should not splash money unnecessarily.” Lumi was in a good mood with the company’s crisis resolved. She subconsciously reached out and curled her hand around his arm.
She did this for the first time.
They might have been living together since she was fifteen, but Lumi had not grown much feeling toward Ryan.
Marrying him was just to please her grandpa.
On the other hand, Ryan forced nothing on Lumi during their three years of marriage. And Lumi never had intimate interaction with him either.
At least Ryan respected Lumi.
“What are you doing?” He stopped in his tracks and nodded his chin at his arm.
Lumi blushed and looked away. “Can’t I even hold my husband’s hand?” There was a pause before she looked up at him. “Thank you, Ryan, for protecting me at the bar earlier. I am touched. But you lost your job because of me. How about you come to work in my company tomorrow onward?”
Women are strange creatures. A simple gesture from others can touch her to tears.
But she could also become furious because of some trivial matter.
Seeing Lumi’s expression, he knew she was starting to accept him after a long time of isolating her feelings. But he knew he still needed to work harder so he could win her heart soonest.
“Thanks. But I think it is easier for me to work at the bar. Don’t worry, I will ask my classmate to talk to the boss of the bar, and I could still continue to work there,” he said to her.
Lumi did not insist. “Well then, up to you.”
He bought two sets of dresses for Lumi, and she bought Ryan two T-shirts. They then left the mall with them holding hands.
Ryan carried the shopping bags filled with clothes in his left hand and held the gift box containing the pendant earrings for Lumi’s grandma in his right hand. As the two were about to walk towards the parking lot, a man wearing a BB cap and a mask approached from the side and swung a steel pipe at Lumi.
He quickly pulled Lumi into his arms, turning around to block the man’s attack with his back. “Be careful!”
The steel pipe scraped past Lumi, who walked away unscathed. The man with the BB cap missed. He raised his middle finger at them with a triumphant look before escaping in a van waiting on the side of the road.
“What the hell?” Ryan cursed before turning to check on Lumi. “Are you okay?”
This was the second time he had saved her. Lumi looked at him; she was almost tearful. “I am fine, honey.”
It was not out of her own will when she was married to him.
He was unassuming, an orphan, and did not seem to possess any extraordinary ability, just the kind that would blend in the crowd. She had felt that life was unfair to her because she had to marry him.
But today, Ryan had saved her again, for the second time, which tugged at her heartstrings.
She did not allow him to touch even her fingers after their marriage. He had never complained, though. Thinking about it now, it was unfair to him.
She should treat him better from now on.
“Good.” He let go of her. As he checked the shopping bags in his hand, he saw the gift bag falling on the ground, his expression crashing. “That’s Grandma’s birthday present!”
Lumi instantly frowned.
The things cost eight hundred thousand dollars.
Now Lumi had only two hundred thousand dollars in savings. She could not afford another pair of eight-hundred-thousand-dollar earrings again.
The exquisite packaging box had been smashed and torn apart.
At this time, Ryan and Lumi suddenly realized that the attacker did not come for her, but for the pendant earrings.
Ryan reached to open the broken box and found that the diamond pendant earrings were broken.
“D*mn it! Raymond must be behind this!” Lumi stomped her feet on the ground in anger upon seeing the broken earrings.
A ruthless look flashed in Ryan’s eyes as he found Raymond to be a real annoyance.
Before he could say anything, a blue BMW stopped by the roadside.
Raymond was seen poking his head out of the car window and looked at the broken box in his hand in surprise. “What a pity, my brother-in-law. The earrings that you have just bought are broken? What are you going to do now? I just called Grandma and told her you bought a pair of eight-hundred-thousand-dollar earrings for her. You two are too careless. Grandma will be very sad tomorrow.”
“You—despicable, shameless. It must be you who sent someone to break the earrings, right?” Lumi could not be angrier.
It went without saying that Raymond was behind this. Otherwise, who would want to break the gift box for no reason?
Raymond tapped his finger on the car door. “Dear sister, how can you accuse your younger brother without the slightest proof? I was just asking out of concern. By the way, it is just eight hundred thousand dollars. You are the president of the company. Amass as much money as you want while you still can.”
Raymond stepped on the accelerator and sped off in his car as soon as his voice trailed off.
Ryan was left frowning beside Lumi. “What did he mean? Haven’t you resolved the company’s crisis? Why did he say that as if you are going to lose your position as the president?”
