The Unknown God

Chapter 19 - 18 Crashing the party

Simply and his two companions reached the fallen outpost of Megita. They had managed to bypass the goblin patrols. The bulk of the traps had been set on the dirt path leading back to Eternal Landing. The sun had set a few hours ago. The lively forest with songs of birds and atmospheric light rays had been replaced by a looming silence and a heavy dark fog. The darkness and the fog reduced the party's visibility. Unlike them, goblins had a near-perfect vision in the dark.

Megita had been strategically built on a hill within an incised meander, a horseshoe-shaped river. The river surrounded the fortified outpost from three sides. The only way in was through the main and only gate of the outpost. Two layers of fortifications separated the party and the outpost, semi-submerged wooden spikes breaking up the enemy and the palisade wrapping around the outpost. Simply estimated the outpost to be one-kilometre square, around ten football fields. A few goblins were manning the palisade. After a few minutes, Simply noticed the lack of sentries on the palisade facing the water. He made his way to the other bank and flanked the outpost.

Ten minutes later he came across a sizable patrol of twenty-three goblins. They were currently 'partying'. Or at least that was what Simply inferred by their behaviour.

He could hear two of them drunkenly arguing at each other to each other and the rest of the group that was trying to escalate the tension between them. One of the onlookers took out a few rocks and started swinging them at the two. The two were surrounded by three other groups who were also drinking. All of them were wearing armour, and all of them were carrying weapons with them. They were all being led by a tall woman who looked to be around eighteen years old. She was dressed in a loose, black tunic with wide sleeves and a long black skirt. She looked to be around twenty years old. At this moment, the only sound was the heavy breathing of her companion as she spoke.

"What? What's your problem?" inquired the two enemies-now-friendly goblins.

"You're not doing the thing right, dumbass."

"As I said, you be happy that you've having such a great time. And, in any case, you do not mind our having more drinking, Captain!?"

"Drink drink, fur tomor-row wehre-," the goblin leader shakily took a few steps forward before crashing headfirst into a tree.

"So what saying you then? Drinking or drink?" asked a puzzled goblin.

"Guess drinking then."

It seemed that the goblins were taking a break from raiding and hunting. As a giant bonfire crackled in the cool night breeze, the goblins started becoming increasingly drunker. A few more joined their Captain in the dirt.

Simply stealthy closed the gap, using bushes and tree trunks to mask his approach. Silently drawing his sword, he calmed his nerves, closing his eyes. When he reopened them, it felt as if an ancient predator had just awoken from a long slumber.

Dashing out of hiding Simply appeared behind an unexpecting goblin. He hit the floor before even processing the situation. Simply followed it with Slash Dash. He flickered between the goblins surrounding the campfire, leaving behind afterimages of himself. After running out of range, he chained his combo with the Five Dragons Wraith. The five projections of Narsil burst forth, impaling the soberest of them all. The unlucky fives promptly lost their lives while their corpses were impaled to the forest trees as decors. His dominating entrance, combined with the ease with which he dispatched fifteen goblins shocked both of his companions. Even the lady had unintentionally gasped at Simply's display of skills.

A few 'uncool' goblins had remained somewhat vigilant. Upon seeing the carnage caused by that single human, they retaliated. A volley of stoned tipped arrows took flight.

Darkness cloaked the flight of the arrow, making them virtually impossible to deflect. These goblins were even better compared to the ones that had ambushed him before. They hit harder and they limited his movements. Three goblins rushed to meet him with drawn blades.

Simply parried with an advanced sword technique, chambering the enemies slash with one of his own. Three numbers accompanied the silent screams of the three as they reached for their severed throats.

Three more joined the fray. The leading two launched simultaneous attacks at Simply. He blocked one heading for his neck. The other one aimed to pierce his heart was timely deflected by his trusty Modified Iron Dagger. The deflected stab penetrated his beginner jute tunic and his flesh. Simply forced his body to escape the reach of the blade but was stunned by a well-placed arrow. The goblin had managed to coordinate with each other to mount a swift and deathly attack.

Stunned, the sword-wielding goblins cashed in on the opportunity. Three attacks approach Simply, while his remain health was only a single digit:7.
