Chapter 19: Experience

Ever since getting this attributes panel, Thulhu had been trying everything to get XP.

Thulhu read common books he found in the library and worked out regularly, but knew from multiple experiments that neither of them worked.

Reading books with special powers or defeating threatening targets were the two methods he was aware of for obtaining XP.

And there were also two preconditions if Thulhu wanted to get XP by defeating an enemy: one was that they had to be matched in power, and the other was that he could only defeat the same enemy for two rounds, and the reward would be cut in half in the second round.

In fact, there was one more way: kill the enemy.

But this way was too cruel. Thulhu had only tried this on the ordinary rats in the sewers.

However, because the power of the two sides didn’t match, Thulhu got zero XP from killing some rats.

But now, the death of a mutant rat finally gained him 10XP!

It was really hard!

Thulhu was so excited that he almost cried in his heart.

Finally, he found a second source of XP after leaving the fight club!

“Good for you, man!”

Shawn laughed and grabbed the pickaxe tight. “Come on, you bloody, filthy things!”

Squeak! Squeak!

The next moment, countless rats emerged in the darkness from deep within the sewer like a tidal wave, and they were now all coming for Shawn and Thulhu!

Taking a closer look, both of them noticed that the rats weren’t mutants, but their numbers were great. Manipulated by the mutant rats, they formed a giant wave!

“Run!”

Seeing that, Thulhu instantly dropped the pickaxe, turned around, and started running for his life.

Thulhu now hated Shawn so much that Thulhu wanted to tear him to pieces!

Shawn was such a jinx!

Squeak! Squeak!

They were running as fast as they could, followed by the wave of rats.

Fortunately, they weren’t very far away from the closest exit. They hurriedly climbed out of the sewer with great difficulty.

They were both gasping hard.

Sitting beside the manhole cover, they finally sighed with relief when they saw that the rats had given up chasing them.

“So the cleaner was hurt because of the mutant rats…” said Thulhu. “To keep working, we’ll need tons of mousetraps and poison. The workload will increase by a lot! Ten silver eagles won’t cover it!”

“Damn!”

Shawn had made up his mind. “I’m going to sue him for contract fraud through the student union! No matter what, I’m not going down there again!”

He looked at Thulhu, feeling extremely sorry. “My bad… I shouldn’t have involved you in this. But I promise you that this is the end of it!”

In fact, Thulhu didn’t believe that Shawn’s complaint would be successful. It was just normal for there to be lots of rats living in the sewers; the only difference was that the rats down here were big.

That cunning employer must have thought up a way to absolve himself.

The best result they could get would be a contract termination. If they were less lucky, they would probably still have to pay some penalty.

However, Shawn decided to take all the responsibility.

“I think… we can still keep working.”

Thulhu had a different idea.

To him, the sewers had turned into a pool of XP, and he wasn’t going to waste it.

“After all, we’re human beings and we’re way smarter than those rats. If we use fire, water, and poison, we’ll kill some of them. The only thing that we need to control is the cost.”

“You’re my brother!”

Shawn was touched and almost teared up. “Thank you for your efforts, but I think…”

“No, I insist,” Thulhu said decisively.

Thulhu was even willing to pay to do the work.

They argued for a while, but Thulhu was finally able to persuade Shawn. They would take a break for the rest of the day, and Shawn would go and buy some rat poison.

Thulhu would go back to upgrade their equipment, especially their protective gear.

In the face of the sharp teeth of the mutant rats, even leather would seem vulnerable.

Seven days later, in the sewers.

Thulhu was wearing a full set of reinforced protective attire and holding a pickaxe. Behind him, it was a great mess.

He and Shawn had tried whatever they could, including using fire, traps and poison. Finally, they killed most of the rats down here.

But they only killed the ordinary rats.

Those mutant rats seemed to have intelligence. After seeing how the rats were killed, the mutant rats never fell into their traps again.

Meanwhile, Thulhu also confirmed one thing.

He had to kill his enemy directly to get XP. Using tricks and traps didn’t count.

He believed that he had gained a good understanding of this attributes panel.

Now, it was time for Thulhu to reap a harvest.

“Come on, babies! I’m alone here!”

Thulhu arrived at the location where they had been attacked and yelled out loud.

He believed that the mutant rats were smart. He wondered if they had already moved out when so many rats were killed.

Thulhu walked around but ran into nothing. He started to miss Shawn.

Shawn was such a jinx that Thulhu believed that if he were here, something would definitely have happened by now.

Squeak!

As soon as Thulhu had this thought, a huge, mutant rat jumped out at him in the darkness!

“Go to hell!”

Thulhu wielded his pickaxe and pierced right through the big rat. Instantly, blood was everywhere.

If killing enough rats would give him a title like in a game, Thulhu believed that he deserved a title like Rat-Killing Master.

He shook the pickaxe to get rid of the dead mutant rat. When he saw the box pop out, [XP +10], he grinned. But why were the rats still here? That was very suspicious.

It was in the nature of all creatures to seek advantages and avoid disadvantages. If the rats were staying, there had to be a reason for it!

When the rat showed up, Thulhu had just walked past a fork in the sewer.

He went back a few steps and saw the fork. The rat’s attack actually led the way!

Thulhu instantly cheered up at this thought and he walked further into the sewers.

He heard the sound of water flowing through the sewers.

The place appeared to be even quieter with the sound of flowing water.

The lamp in his hand could only light up a small section in front of him.

Thulhu held the pickaxe in the other hand. He was on high alert.

Suddenly, his ears caught something, and he turned around quickly. “Crane Style!”

His right hand moved swiftly and the pickaxe flashed in the air. A second later, two big mutant rats were writhing in agony on the ground, blood pouring from their bodies.

Now, Thulhu already had 40XP!

Finally, he saw the small ‘+’ again at the end of the Maga Fighting skill.

[Spend 40XP to upgrade Maga Fighting level? Yes/No?]

The upgrade this time would cost him 40XP, but it was still cheaper than upgrading the Corpse Princess skill.

Thulhu instantly chose “yes” without hesitation.
