Chapter 30: Compensation

“An extraordinary, hiding on campus?!”

The right amount of anger was on Lyme’s face. “What is she planning? No filth should be allowed before the glory of the Goddess of Light!”

St George’s University could be seen as private land owned by the Goddess of Light Church. No extraordinaries from the outside were allowed to sneak in.

“I recognized her. I learned about extraordinaries from my family. But I have no idea what the solution is!” Thulhu pretended to be helpless.

“I completely understand. Ordinary cops won’t believe you. And by the time she does something terrible, it’ll be too late!” Lyme agreed.

“Luckily, I know Donald, and Donald knows you, sir!”

Thulhu said this, but had yet to mention the name of the extraordinary.

“You’re very brave to decide to stand up for the safety of the campus! You should be rewarded!” said Lyme, who was aware that this young lad wasn’t going to tell him the woman’s name until he made an offer. “What about a good scholarship?”

“Thank you for your generosity! But… I’ve always been interested in the world of extraordinaries!” Thulhu hinted.

“Well… This can be difficult…”

Lyme frowned. “That world, and its mysterious knowledge, is dangerous. According to Donald, the woman can manipulate shadows. She deviated from the bright path shown by the goddess and fell into darkness. Her power should be taken back and the mysterious knowledge should be kept safe…”

Hearing that, Thulhu glanced at Donald, who forced a smile in response.

Well, it seemed that Donald had leaked quite a bit of information.

Thulhu paused for a moment, then said, “What about a compromise? Say, some gold dragons and some books that have to do with that world?”

Lyme was hesitant, and he glanced at Donald. “Alright. If it’s not something very important that you’re looking for, I’ll get some copies for you. That’s the best I can do. Now, tell me her name!”

“Katherine! She’s a teacher!” Thulhu took a deep breath. “I obtained some clues from Molly; Katherine’s dangerous. I think she’s still hiding something…”

“Katherine…?”

Lyme nodded and stood up, obviously ready to see his guests off.

Thulhu and Donald had to go.

Lyme sat back on the couch for a while longer, tasting his tea. At that moment, he suddenly asked, “So, what do you think?”

A wall decoration opened up and a man walked out from behind.

The man was in his early thirties and looked very serious. He said in a cold voice, “There’s nothing special about him – he’s only an ordinary, and not an extraordinary yet.”

“I knew it. A declining, insignificant family… They can’t even teach their own descendants now…” Lyme smiled and shook his head. “Are you going to take care of that Katherine?”

“Not necessary. She’s just a rank one [Shadower] – she can’t even control more than three shadows at a time. The police can handle it,” said the man.

He then continued in the same cold voice, “Inform the police department and have them take care of it. This isn’t the reason why I’m here.”

“You’re here for…”

Lyme looked very serious. “You’re here for Beatrice Tyler?”

“That’s right. She’s growing at an incredible rate. It’s horrible!” said the man. “She killed a law enforcement officer.”

“What?!” Lyme jumped up, feeling shocked. “She… killed a law enforcement officer?!”

Law enforcement officers were from a special department in the union. All of them were outstanding extraordinaries responsible for taking care of cases that had to do with extraordinary power!

“The department adjusted her rank to ‘hazard’ on the list. But we haven’t figured out where she got the ‘inheritance’ from! The department sent me here to look into it.”

The man looked baffled as he pondered and murmured, “We have to look one by one into the people who were close to Beatrice. I did think this young man named Thulhu was suspicious, but now it turns out that he’s just an ordinary!”

“Then… why…?” Lyme was curious.

“No idea… This will be the biggest change the world will have seen in three hundred years. Those unknown, powerful and mysterious beings will gradually wake up during this great change, and their shadows will stretch into our world…”

The man’s voice dropped as he spoke.

“Sorry…”

After they got into the coach and closed the door, Donald suddenly apologized. “I didn’t know…”

“It’s okay.”

Thulhu shrugged.

Thulhu didn’t have anything other than a name to strike a bargain with Lyme.

But Donald might have known all this time that this would be the case. Then why had he still chosen to help Thulhu? Maybe Lyme had promised him something else.

For example, would this be a great merit for Donald, when he tried to get into the church?

Thulhu knew how tricky the human mind could be. Compared with wild and unstable extraordinary power, the power given by the church was obviously much more reliable.

However, Donald’s yearning for extraordinary power also seemed so genuine.

“So… what are you going to do? Just watch?”

The coach soon brought them back to campus.

When they got off, Donald asked the question hesitantly.

“Sure, I’ll watch. But it’s not like we’re gonna get a reward for watching,” said Thulhu.

The police would take care of it, so everything should go smoothly.

The only risk was the other witch that Thulhu hadn’t told them about.

Thulhu had kept it from them for his own purpose.

From his negotiation with Katherine, Thulhu was certain no one knew what happened to Beatrice as well as in the sewers, unless Thulhu himself were to confess.

Thus, by not telling Lyme that there was another witch, Thulhu left some room for error, which could be beneficial to him!

For example, Katherine might escape since the police had the wrong number of criminals.

Thulhu could then bide his time and reap the biggest profit.

Of course, what was most likely going to happen was that the police would be prepared well enough to catch them both. Then, while there would be nothing for Thulhu to gain, he would at least have killed two birds with one stone.

“This is what I think!”

Donald looked quite excited. “We’ll very likely see extraordinaries fighting! We have to be there!”

“You know when they’re gonna do it?”

Thulhu was interested.

“I can take a guess. If you got your hands on some important information, and you were much more powerful than your target, what would you do? Would you wait?”

Donald said in excitement, “No, you wouldn’t, right? The cops won’t wait, either! They’ll take action as soon as possible to eliminate all unknown risks!”

Thulhu nodded. “I see. Then, it’s very likely that they’ll take action right away! Tonight!”
