Chapter 36: Ill Fate

The dark side of this occupation, [Demon Hunter], was totally out of Thulhu’s expectations.

He didn’t know what to say when Roald told him the horrifying origin of the occupation which their family had engaged in for generations.

Thulhu had indeed been interested in the family’s inheritance, but now, he just wanted to stay as far away as possible from it.

No matter what path he picked, he had to first sign a contract with the demon in the abyss if he wanted to become a demon hunter.

This didn’t sound like a good deal to Thulhu at all, and he could easily anticipate the costs and consequences.

Even those decent hunters who stuck to their beliefs had to turn to other gods later as they couldn’t control the demonic power within them!

Thulhu believed that such a powerful contract was a great blow to a human soul, but it was twice as hard for an outstanding demon hunter, who first had to sign a contract with the demon, and then sign a second one with a god! A human soul could be torn in half!

“Wait a second!”

Thulhu suddenly interrupted Roald. “You said that because of a ritual, the old guy is now somewhere far away?”

To become a [Demon Contractor], one had to go through the ritual called Staring Into the Abyss, in which a person signed the contract with the demon.

Of course, there was no way that an ordinary human could sign the contract with the actual demon, so the contract was in fact signed with the demiplane where the demon lived, known as the abyss, and a very small fraction of power would be bestowed on the human.

The ritual was extremely dangerous. Doncaster had failed once, at the cost of his wife’s life.

It seemed that their father had done something unwise again.

“Yes… our father has been blaming himself all this time. He blames himself for losing our mother to the abyss!” Roald looked grief-stricken. “He tried all sorts of ways to get our mother back, and finally, he made some changes to the ritual. Honestly speaking, I’m not sure if the ritual really worked or not, but there’s a chance that our father is now in the abyss where the true demon holds sway!”

Or the ritual had failed and the power had devoured their father’s body… Thulhu thought to himself.

But he still nodded. “I don’t think the demon will enjoy negotiating with our father though… He might not even be able to get to the demon…”

Of course, they both had hope.

They hoped that Doncaster was indeed now in the abyss and fighting the demon in order to bring back his wife.

Both of them remained silent for a while.

Finally, Thulhu was the first to speak. “I see – so, you want me to become a specialist, but not a demon hunter.”

“Exactly.” Roald nodded.

“Good, that’s not what I want either,” said Thulhu.

Thulhu took a deep breath and asked, “So, do you have more information about other rank one occupations?”

Speaking of this, Roald looked a bit embarrassed. “I’ve been training hard since our dad left. I’m now a rank two [Demon Hunter]. I’ve defeated quite a number of demon subordinates and dark groups. Among them, the most dangerous and influential one was the secret group which worshipped death. Apart from that magic book page that I found, I did get some incomplete information about an occupation. I can’t really understand it though. Maybe you should take a look!”

“Incomplete?”

Thulhu didn’t know what that meant until Roald finally opened the black suitcase he was carrying.

It contained strangely shaped machetes, iron flying claws, rope, and even a revolver.

Roald rummaged around in the suitcase and finally pulled out a black piece of paper. “Here it is!”

Thulhu took it and felt surprised. The piece of paper was also a page from a book.

It was written in ancient Heber and described a ritual called “Descent of Ill Fate,” which could change the constitution of a rank one [Apprentice] and accustom the person to the power of death and misfortune. As a result, the person would become a rank two [The Ill-Fated]!

Thulhu remembered the occupation, which was the condition for upgrading [Corpse Princess]. This page might have come from the same book as the first one, as Roald had gotten them both from the secret group!

Thulhu just realized that [The Ill-Fated] was a rank two occupation.

“It’s about a rank two occupation. I have to become an [Apprentice] first. How do I do that?” Thulhu asked.

“No idea…” Roald scratched his head. “If I knew, I would have already told you.”

But before Thulhu said anything, Roald hurriedly added, “But [Apprentice] and [Soldier] are the two most common occupations. Some major groups, such as the churches of the Seven Gods and the union government, must have the information! Our family historically had a close relationship with the Goddess of Light Church. Well, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to get the information from them through a proper trade.”

In other words, because Thulhu was from a decent family, he could pass the background check relatively easily.

Thulhu was a bit speechless. “But if I can talk to the church and even find a way to trade with them, I might as well just join the church, right? There must be far better options than becoming [The Ill-Fated]. Why should I bother picking this dark occupation if that’s the case?”

In Thulhu’s eyes, the occupation [The Ill-Fated] sounded just as evil as Katherine’s occupation.

Also, based on his personal experience, he didn’t believe that the Goddess of Light Church would be nice to an extraordinary.

If Thulhu had his way, he would rather stay away from the dark side of the world, or stay neutral at least.

Making an enemy of the church and even the entire world as a single individual didn’t sound like a lot of fun to him.

Picking the right occupation was clearly just as crucial in this world as in his past life.

“Sorry… I went off-track…”

Roald patted his head. “It’s true that the group wasn’t anything good at all. Its members were like rats in the sewers, hiding in the dark. It’s by no means a good occupation. However, even if you could join the church, it would still be hard for you to win their recognition and earn enough credit; it’s the same with the union government… What I was thinking was that… if you choose to become a necromancer and learn more about the power of death, it might be easier for you to deal with Beatrice in the future…”

Right, Beatrice… Thulhu almost forgot.

He was lost in thought.

If he became a necromancer, he would probably have an edge over Beatrice.

Looking at it that way, becoming [The Ill-Fated] now was much more acceptable to Thulhu.

However, he still had to figure out how to become an [Apprentice] first.

“I… I still have to think about it!”

Thulhu was cautious in his reply.

“I see. You do need more time to think about it. The system is very complex… You can never be too careful. Plan for your future well!”

Roald nodded. “You’re not taking classes anymore, right?”

“Yes?” Thulhu replied.

“Then, I have to find a place to properly give you the family training you missed! It’ll be very useful to you in the future!” said Roald seriously.

So, Roald was going to have Thulhu make up his missed lessons?

Thinking of the horrifying tools in Roald’s suitcase, Thulhu didn’t think it was going to be a pleasant experience.
