Chapter 37: The Training

Family… demon hunter… the career path… extraordinary…

In his bedroom, Thulhu’s mind was full of these thoughts while he held the black piece of paper.

[XP +100]

As he read through the book page, his XP increased.

Thulhu once got 50XP from reading up on how to use Corpse Princess. This ritual was clearly more advanced!

Thulhu pulled out his attributes panel again:

When he finished reading the book page, a box popped up:

[Rank two occupation information: The Ill-Fated, detected! Required occupation: rank one Apprentice; 2.5 Spirit required! Requirements are not met! Occupation acquisition failed!]

As Thulhu expected, there was no way for him to skip rank one. Even if he could, he didn’t have enough XP…

Thulhu quickly worked out a plan in his mind.

To become a specialist, he had to first acquire a rank one occupation.

Currently, the only complete path that he knew was [Demon Hunter]. However, he didn’t want to go anywhere near that terrifying demonic power.

He also didn’t think that he could get any information about Katherine’s power from Lyme.

His only choice was to join the church or the union.

However, Thulhu didn’t want to become a follower of anything, nor did he want to be an agent.

In his past life, Thulhu was an atheist. However, in this world where gods truly existed, he didn’t dare lie in front of them.

Work for the union?

Thulhu shook his head.

Although the union government would certainly have a lot of information on extraordinary career paths, it probably had very strict restrictions when it came to extraordinaries, and treated them like tools. If the government controlled its extraordinaries like soldiers and gave Thulhu an extremely dangerous and risky mission, he wouldn’t be able to reject it.

Thulhu wondered if he should wait a bit longer before making a decision. Maybe some new solutions would pop up.

He curled his lip.

He was quite patient in most cases.

However, when he thought of how fast Beatrice was growing in power, he got very anxious. He couldn’t just sit around waiting.

Even if Roald could find more exceptional rank one occupations, who knew if they were safe or had a future.

Time had proven that occupations like [Apprentice] and [Soldier] were sustainable, and they had produced many masters. Thulhu should trust these occupations.

If he chose some secret and unpopular inheritance with only very limited potential, it was very likely that it would be impossible for him to make any further progress in the future!

That was why Roald suggested he choose [Apprentice]. However, he didn’t know about Thulhu’s attributes panel. As long as Thulhu had enough XP and could avoid conflict between different occupations, picking up multiple occupations wouldn’t be a big problem for him at all!

Thulhu was pretty confident in this.

Thus, Thulhu had to learn how to acquire a rank one occupation as soon as possible in order to gain an edge over Beatrice.

At that moment, he thought of the body in the sewers.

That could give him some valuable information as well.

He still had to decipher the parchment pieces, which required Professor Alannys’s notes on Old Ram.

Thulhu wanted the materials so bad!

Thulhu didn’t have to worry about Roald’s safety at all. His elder brother was a rank two demon hunter.

Thulhu offered to find Roald a place to stay, but Roald refused. According to Roald, because of the demonic power inside his body, living in a spacious, tidy room would make him uncomfortable.

However, Thulhu believed that this was just because Roald was already used to being poor and wouldn’t spend money to rent a proper place. For Roald, living under a bridge was cozy enough.

They were now in an abandoned factory.

A shaft of sunlight shone through a broken window. There was a thick layer of dust on the ground.

There was trash scattered everyone, but nothing metal. The homeless had taken all the metal items and sold them for money.

This place had once been a textile mill and the owner had amassed great wealth. At its peak, a great number of female textile workers had been hired.

However, after the first steam-powered spinning wheel came out following developments in technology, the price of textiles plunged and this place went broke. All the machines were sold, and only this empty shell was left. Only the homeless and some animals dropped by now.

Roald regarded this factory as an ideal place to stay for the time being and for training.

Roald and Thulhu cleaned up an area for the training.

“…So, most of the things I know are about the demon.”

Roald started the training with a brief introduction. “The world is too big. Besides the demon in the abyss, more evil powers will wake up during Dawn of the Gods. Their subordinates are different, but they all have one thing in common: They all hate humans!”

“So… because the Seven Gods are nice to people, humans regard them as the righteous gods?” asked Thulhu thoughtfully.

“No!”

Roald corrected him. “What is your view on gods?”

“…What do I think?”

Thulhu didn’t expect the question at all. “Well… They’re mysterious, powerful, almighty… And they need followers? Right?”

“Wrong! As human beings, we can never understand the gods!”

Roald shook his head. “They’re totally beyond our ken! The Seven Gods are regarded as the righteous ones because they aren’t hostile toward most humans! Humans built the churches of the Seven Gods to worship them, or in other words, to please them. That’s where their so-called mercy comes from! Therefore, faith is important, but it isn’t essential or indispensable!”

“Not hostile…? That’s it? There isn’t any good will… Humans built the churches to… please them?” Thulhu murmured as he repeated the words.

Then he looked up at Roald. “If a religious zealot heard you, you would be burned to ashes!”
