Chapter 5: A Date

When Thulhu woke up, he felt utterly refreshed.

Thulhu pulled up the panel first and decided to earn some XP to start his day.

A hundred sit-ups, a hundred push-ups, and then jogging…

Thulhu totally exhausted himself in the morning. Gasping hard, he pulled up the panel again hopefully, but saw zero increase in his XP.

Thulhu was quite unhappy about it. He wished he could give the cheat code a bad customer review.

But there obviously wasn’t any customer service. His stomach started to feel really empty, so his priority now was to eat.

There was a nice dining hall in the university, where fried chicken wings, pork cutlets, fruit salad, mashed potatoes, fine bread, meat pies, and creamy roasted lobsters were available. They all tasted so good!

Thulhu first went back to his dorm to change his clothes. Searching in his pockets, he only found a handful of copper and silver coins. He smiled bitterly.

White Eagle Union adopted the copper, silver eagle, and gold dragon as its official currency, and they were all coins. A copper was the smallest. A hundred coppers equaled to a silver eagle, and ten silver eagles equaled to a gold dragon.

To put it simply, different coins were made of different metals.

No matter what world it was, human beings were always greedy for gold.

Due to industrialization and the scarcity of precious metals in the last decade, however, the union had introduced paper money to replace the silver eagle, but people in the countryside were unwilling to accept it just yet.

Even Thulhu preferred real coins to thin paper sheets.

A plain sandwich cost three coppers in most cases. According to the union, an individual’s lowest cost of living was ten coppers a day, which was roughly three silver eagles a month.

The salary which Green Tree Fort was offering hence was pretty decent. Thulhu would instantly become a member of the middle class if he took the job!

However, Thulhu had yet to accept the job offer. For now, he only had five silver eagles on him. He couldn’t spend all of it on food, or he would soon starve to death.

So he wouldn’t pick the lobster. He would get himself a hotdog.

Thulhu muttered to himself and headed for the hotdog stall.

There were quite a number of people downstairs. Young couples could be seen everywhere, which was a huge blow to Thulhu, who had been single all this time – a “single dog,” as people like him were called.

Being an extraordinary didn’t feel any different. Well, this might be because Thulhu wasn’t a real extraordinary yet. He only knew a single black magic ritual, and hadn’t tried it out yet…

Thulhu stopped in front of a hotdog stall.

The hotdogs sprinkled with black pepper, as well as the soft and hot buns, smelled really good. The fresh lettuce and homemade ketchup looked appealing as well. It was time to give his thoughts a break.

A single dog could always enjoy a hotdog. Nothing really mattered other than eating well.

He took out a couple of coppers and was ready to grab one. At that moment, someone pulled on his sleeve gently.

“H- hi, Botley!”

The voice was shy. Thulhu turned around and saw one of his classmates. She had a round, slightly freckled face and a big pair of glasses, and was wearing a simple dress. Her eyes were pure and bright. She did look cute.

“Hi, Molly!” Thulhu greeted her.

He wasn’t really showing much enthusiasm, as he was starving right now.

Again, food came first.

Thulhu knew why he was still single to this day, but it was just so hard for him to change.

Molly lowered her head and handed him a note.

“Beatrice… wanted to give this to you, bye!” Molly stammered.

Then, she ran away.

Congratulations to Thulhu, for pushing himself further along the path of a single dog.

Thulhu finally got his hotdog and juice with a poker face. After taking a big bite out of the hotdog, he unfolded the note.

“Seven this evening. Room 303, White Tower Cafe. Wanna tell you something. Beatrice.”

Thulhu could smell the sweet scent from this pink note. His heart thumped. He wondered if his spring had come.

Very possible.

Although he wasn’t very good-looking, he knew what Shawn was like. Given the latter’s big mouth, he must have told people about the offer Thulhu got.

As a research assistant, Thulhu would soon make more money than a lot of people, and he had a very good chance of becoming part of the upper class In the future.

Although Beatrice had rejected him before, maybe she had changed her mind? Thulhu didn’t mind.

Thulhu knew that a girl like Beatrice, who came from an ordinary family, had to be very scrupulous when it came to her marriage, which would decide her future.

Also, two people dating didn’t necessarily mean that they had to get married in the union.

Thulhu decided that this was a date!

He still had some time, so he immediately went back to his dorm and pulled out Shawn’s suit.

White shirt, suit, bow, a decent hat… He looked good!

Adjusting his bow a bit in front of the mirror, he walked out of the dorm and headed for the cafe.

White Tower Cafe was located very close to the university. It only took Thulhu about ten minutes to get there. Their coffee was very popular among the students, and the place also offered private rooms, which was just perfect for young couples in love.

Although it was just a normal date, Thulhu’s heart kept beating fast on his way there. Soon, he saw the white, three-story building.

“Welcome!”

Thulhu walked through the revolving door and a waiter in a tuxedo greeted him.

Thulhu looked around. In the soft light, the place’s decor was quite lovely. There were long couches which formed a circle in the middle of the lounge. The aroma of coffee and soft music lingered in the air. Thulhu had to admit, this was such a romantic place.

“Hello, sir. How many, please?” asked the waiter.

“303, please. My… uh, my friend will meet me there. We have a reservation,” said Thulhu, with the poker face which he always had on.

“Please follow me.” The waiter politely led Thulhu to the third floor and showed him the room.

“Sir, the basic fee has been paid. Do you want anything to drink right now?” asked the waiter.

“Thanks, I’ll wait for my friend to get here,” said Thulhu.

After the waiter left and closed the door, Thulhu looked around the place.

The couch was big and soft. The purple curtains looked fine and thick. When they were drawn shut, they would definitely be able to shut everything out.

Why did Beatrice want to see him? Was she going to apologize? Did she want to be his girlfriend? Or… was she going to borrow money off him?

Thulhu didn’t like the last possibility at all.

Thulhu waited and waited. Finally, at seven fifteen, the door opened, and a young lady walked in.
