Chapter 50: Misfortune

Shawn looked very excited. “I’m here just to take a look before taking the job. Who would have thought that you’re also here!”

Thulhu rolled his eyes. “What a surprise!”

Meanwhile, his spiritual perception spread out and he scanned Shawn up and down.

It was too much of a coincidence. Thulhu felt it was rather suspicious.

However, his spiritual perception didn’t detect anything.

“You never told me you have a shop in Niah!” said Shawn. “I’ve decided. I’m staying to work for you!”

Thulhu was a bit speechless. Shawn had basically told them that he wasn’t going to stay long since he was going back to university.

So Thulhu rolled his eyes again.

“I know what you’re thinking,” said Roald. “We don’t know how long this shop can stay open anyway. At least you two know each other.”

Obviously, Roald had no confidence in running this business.

Thulhu also knew that sooner or later, they would have to sell this place. It was still possible that he would go to Green Tree Fort, and there was no way Roald could stay in the same city for too long as a demon hunter.

Thulhu had been procrastinating. He still hadn’t made up his mind whether to take the job in the lab or not.

He rubbed his face. It was such a tough decision.

If he stayed in Niah, he could at least use the shop to make a living, and take on missions from the church to accumulate XP.

Also, he would have enough spare time to look for Beatrice and Kila.

However…

Just like what Donald had said, the lab in Green Tree Fort might be a military department. Thulhu had done some of his own research and came to that conclusion.

In such a powerful department, there might be a greater chance for Thulhu to meet more extraordinaries.

Perhaps the lab even used extraordinaries as security guards!

Also, it was very rare for a graduate to get an offer from the lab. Thulhu was the only one from St George’s University this year to get it!

Thulhu’s Basic Physics was at level 4 because he had learned physics in his last life, which was the main reason why he had gotten the offer.

If he turned it down this time, it would be almost impossible for him to get a second chance.

Thulhu wasn’t willing to work for a powerful department of the union because of the strict regulations and the immense risk and danger he would have to face. Working in a lab, however, was different.

Researchers were the most valued people in the union, and were always well-protected.

Even when two countries were at war, the country which won would first take away the other country’s researchers and scientists and make sure that they were safe.

That was the reason why Thulhu had applied for the job.

Now, since he was already an extraordinary, Thulhu believed that there would be more chances waiting for him at Green Tree Fort.

The union had to know much more about extraordinary power than any other individual or group.

Maybe the union even had information on high rank occupations!

“So I take it that it’s a yes,” said Roald.

Roald had no idea what Thulhu was thinking. He turned to Shawn and said, “If you don’t have any more questions, we can sign the contract now so you can start working here right away.”

“No problem!”

Shawn nodded excitedly.

Thulhu found a chance to follow Roald out. He found a quiet corner next to the shop and asked Roald in a low voice, “What’s going on?”

“Well… In fact, keeping a close eye on Shawn is the latest mission from the church. The church believes that he’s been caught by some ‘misfortune,’ which is the reason why Shawn and the people around him all have a very tough time.”

Roald explained the situation to Thulhu.

“So his misfortune brought down a big trade company?!” Thulhu was shocked.

Although Thulhu knew that Shawn could be quite the jinx sometimes, the power of Shawn’s misfortune had now surpassed Thulhu’s expectations.

Thulhu felt very insecure. “Then why did you still hire him? Our shop might have to shut down because of him!”

“The church will compensate us and pay the salary!” said Roald. “Also, he’s your friend. We should help him.”

“You’re right.”

Thulhu took a deep breath and nodded.

It was just a shop. And they would receive compensation from the church, so there was nothing to worry about.

Maybe the church would give them an even better shop!

Thulhu thought this to himself.

All of a sudden, he felt guilty.

His roommate was in danger, but he only cared about his own wellbeing. Wasn’t he being too cold-blooded?

“Speaking of misfortune… What can manipulate misfortune? Not the demon, I suppose…”

Thulhu thought hard as he searched for leads.

“Fortune is the most unpredictable thing in this world, even for extraordinaries. Any existence that can control fortune would be unbelievably powerful,” said Roald.

Roald then shared his thoughts with Thulhu. “Therefore, I think Shawn was just somehow touched by misfortune. The Goddess of Light Church has secretly purified him. It’s not very likely that he’ll bring us trouble…”

“I see. So we’re just observing him.”

Thulhu understood, and heaved a sigh of relief.

“That’s right. We’ll keep him for a while to make sure that he’s been completely purified,” said Roald.

But Roald still emphasized, “There’s no such thing as permanent safety in the extraordinary world. He better learn how to protect himself.”

Thulhu nodded.

“Then, there’s another mission.” Roald looked more serious now. “It’s a paranormal case. I think some cursed spirit is involved!”

“We don’t really have to take on that kind of mission…” murmured Thulhu.

Even his teeth started to hurt when he heard Roald’s words.

Thulhu loved gold dragons and XP, but he didn’t want to die.

“I actually asked for the mission myself. You remember Molly?” asked Roald in a deep voice.

“Katherine’s student who went missing after the siege? Molly Apple?” Thulhu nodded.

He confirmed, “If you’re talking about that Molly, yes, I do know her.”

“She’s been found!”

Roald’s eyebrows knitted together.

“Where?”

“In a gallery. She showed up there, and bad things happened. The survivors lost part of their memories, but they’re certain that they saw a spirit in the gallery!”

“Spirit…”

Thulhu knew it wasn’t a simple case.
