Warlord Of Chaos

Chapter 9 - Straw Dog

Under normal circ.u.mstances, one's life would be much more comfortable if one made money in big cities and then spent it in small towns. In this sense, though Han Jin had spent ten pieces of gold coins as bait, and one gold coin to change others' impressions of him, the remaining nine gold coins was still a large amount of money in Radon Town.

Thus, Han Jin's life now was very comfortable as he ate and slept in a hotel, and the townsfolk's attitude even started to shift. They started greeting him with a smile when they came across him in the streets, and since Han Jin was also a polite person, he always smiled back in response, regardless of whether he knew them or not.

One day, Han Jin and Moxinke had returned to their room after breakfast as usual. Han Jin leisurely sat in a chair, while Moxinke seemed heavyhearted. He hesitated for a while before saying to Han Jin, "Are we going to stay here like this? It's boring, and..."

Hearing this, a glimmer of a smile showed on Han Jin's face, He knew what Moxinke meant. Staying in the hotel and doing nothing but spending money was by no means a good decision. What's more, Moxinke was not a man that liked to take advantage of others, so he often fought with Han Jin for the bill. Now, he was worrying about his future.

But just when Han Jin was going to speak, Steelberg suddenly opened the door and hurriedly ran inside. "Young Master, Miss Keeley has moved away, and there were some thugs that seemed to be looking for her!"

Han Jin was stunned. "When did she leave?"

"Don't know." Steelberg shook his head. "I waited downstairs this morning for a long time and no one came in or out. Just when I was planning to go back, a group of people broke into her shop, but it didn't seem like they found what they were looking for."

"Raphael, is that why you sent Steelberg out every morning..." Moxinke said in an understanding tone.

"She must have gotten a message last night and left immediately!" Han Jin did not have the time to talk to Moxinke. He stood up and pondered for a moment. "What do those people look like?"

"Young Master, they... they looked like nobles - the kind that we shouldn't trifle with!"

"Are they still there?"

"I suppose so."

"Let's go and see."

"Young Master, we'd better not..." Steelberg timidly said. Strictly speaking, he was not worried about himself, but about his master, Han Jin. Judging by his experience as the household slave of a noble family, Steelberg knew that those people were either rich or of a high status. Even when his old master, Raphael's father, was still alive, he wouldn't have dared challenge them. If they somehow offend them in someway, there would be no one to save them.

"We are going!" Han said in an indubitable tone.

Some time later, Han Jin and his servant, Steelberg, had arrived at Miss Keeley's building They stood nearby, with Moxinke following behind them. As expected, the group of people were still there, standing in front of the building, and discussing something in a low voice. Behind the building, there were ten tall war horses, all of them with white and pure manes. Even if he didn't see their owner, Han Jin could guess these people's status just by their horses. The man in the lead was in his thirties, with thin cheeks, and wearing a set of red armor. His eyes glimmered with aggressive lights. Manhanna, the mayor of Radon Town, was standing beside the man, stooping down and nodding with a flattering smile on his face.

"Raphael, they have four high-grade knights. We should definitely avoid them!" Moxinke said word by word, "And the guy in the red robe, I can't even tell how powerful he is; do you know what that means?"

"I do," Han Jin replied. Compared to Moxinke, Han Jin was calmer. He had been expecting them before they had even arrived. The men that could force Miss Keylee, a famous lady of Holy Crown City, to such a desperate situation, were definitely not people that a mere baron could deal with.

"You knew? You are not going to fight? Then why are we still here?" Moxinke was surprised. He had thought Han Jin had just come here to teach those people a lesson in order to impress his crush. Moxinke had come along to help Han Jin, but when he saw his potential opponents, his courage disappeared immediately.

"Who said anything about fighting? I told you, violence isn't always the answer." Han Jin tapped his forehead. "Sometimes..."

"You have to use your brain. Yes, yes, I know!" Moxinke rolled his eyes.

Just then, the man in the red robe noticed Han Jin. He whispered something to Manhanna, who also took a glance at Han Jin before whispering an explanation. A look of disdain appeared in the man's eyes as he listened, and he promptly started to ignore Han Jin's presence from then on.

Two knights galloped along the side of the street and arrived in front of the shop in a flash. They reined in their horses simultaneously in a single uniform motion as if they had been trained to do this a thousand times. One of them said in a low voice, "My Lord, we found some clues to the west of the town."

"Mount up!" the man in the red robe roared.

Moments later, the group of unwelcome guests disappeared into the distance. A greedy smile finally appeared on Mayor Mahanna's face. He waved his hand, and several members from the law enforcement team stepped forward and sealed the door of the shop.

Manhanna hesitated for a moment before eventually walking up to Han Jin. "Good morning, Young Master Raphael."

"Mayor Manhanna, long time no see. You seem to be getting younger every day," Han Jin replied politely. "May I ask who those people were?"

"Oh... Powerful men from Holy Crown City - real noblemen," Manhanna said in a mysterious tone.

"Ah." Han Jin nodded. He knew what Manhanna meant. If they were the real nobles, then who was the fake? Obviously that was a hidden insult directed at Han Jin, but he didn't plan to insult back anytime soon. As the saying goes, it was better to deal with the man in charge, than the executives. It wasn't yet time for him to pick a fight with Manhanna.

"Young Master Raphael, I've got other business to take care of. Please excuse me." Manhanna grinned.

Han Jin nodded again with a smile, which remained on his face until Manhanna disappeared out of sight. Then he sighed and asked, "Steelberg, did this old bastard always have such a sharp tongue?"

"Yes, Young Master, that old man is a good for nothing. Old Master always disdained him too."

"Disdain?" Han Jin immediately sensed something. "Did my father not worry about him causing trouble?"

"He wouldn't dare!" Steelberg said proudly, "Old Master gave him a solid scolding one times, but what could that old man do? Nothing! All he did was stand there and smile like a dog!"

Han Jin sighed. He used to think Mayor Manhanna disliked them just because Steelberg had tried to peek at his daughter taking a bath, but it seems that he had missed something. Though it was normal for everyone to give a falling wall a shove, there were also specific reasons why some people particularly enjoyed humiliating someone during their lowest point.

"Raphael, I know you like Miss Keeley, but... And please don't get angry if I tell you the truth, but..." Moxinke uttered haltingly.

"Where did you get that from? Who told you I like Miss Keeley?" Han Jin did not know whether to laugh or cry.

"Who are you trying to trick here. You think I'm as dumb as that dwarf?" Moxinke narrowed his eyes at Han Jin contemptuously. "If you don't like her, why would you ask Steelberg to spy on her every day?"

Han Jin was speechless. He did care about Miss Keeley, but that was not out of love. He had planned to help Miss Keeley get rid of her trouble and teach those men a lesson. That way, he could firmly establish himself as a friend of Miss Keeley. Since she had money, and Han Jin believed he had above average intelligence, it would be a beneficial relationship. Under the current circ.u.mstances, becoming an pseudo-advisor was his best option. It would at least allow him to earn money and change his life for the better. But man proposes, God disposes; he had underestimated the dwarf Villar's temper, and now that one of her subordinates had died because of him, he had completely offended Miss Keeley.

But Han Jin hadn't given up yet. He wanted to do something that would put him back in the favor of Miss Keeley. It must be admitted that Han Jin was an honest man. Otherwise, he could have very well contacted Miss Keeley's enemy and made up some story about her to get what he wanted, but that thought had never even occurred to him. After all, it was his negligence that had caused the death of Miss Keeley's servant. He owed her a debt, and it must be paid back! Also, from the perspective of human nature, it was natural for a man to valiantly attempt to help a lady as beautiful as Miss Keeley when they were in distress.

"Forget it; let's talk about more important matters." Han Jin changed the topic and said, "You said they have four high-grade knights?"

"Yes, and?"

"How strong are you compared to them?"

"You mean, who is better at fighting?"

"Yes."

"I'm high-grade swordsman, and they are high-grade knights, so we are at the same rank. But as to who is better, we can see only after a real fight."

"Are there many men as strong as you?" This question was quite important to Han Jin. He had always considered Moxinke as his goal to surpass. If his plan went well, he was confident that he could achieve this goal within one or two years.

"It depends on the place. In a small town like this, I'm this." Moxinke held up his thumb. "But in Holy Crown City, I am just this." He then held up his little finger.

"Ah..." Han Jin smiled. Only this time, his smile seemed a little bitter.

"Have you ever heard of Lord Dismark, the Lord of Holy Crown City? He is a supreme knight focusing on the element of light! He's so powerful he could go toe to toe with a giant dragon!!" Moxinke exclaimed. "A high-grade swordsman like me is nothing to him."

Han Jin waved his hand, indicating that he had heard enough. Needless to say, his confidence had just suffered a cruel and inhumane blow, but deep in his heart, there was a fire burning more and more brightly. Moxinke had told him about the general landscape of things outside of the town. The continent was in every way disintegrating into chaos, torn by chaos as dozens of lords fought wars against each other. Compared with the outside world, Radon Town was a fictitious land of peace. Radon Town was a peaceful heaven compared to the outside, as neither bandits nor professional armies wanted to invade a place with no profit. However, just because the town had always lived in peace didn't mean it would enjoy the same peace in the future. If something catastrophic happened, the whole town, including Han Jin, would be as defenseless as straw dogs. At that point, all they could do would be to wait for death! He didn't care what others thought about that, but he, himself, would never accept such an ending.
