Adventures Of Bayek: Through The Void And Beyond

Chapter 24 - Cocoons and Stalkers(Variants)

"What's happening to them??"

"Bayek said this how you know they are evolving. It's the same state we found Maggie in"

"When are they going to wake?"

"It should be soon..."

Bayek heard the voices of Miranda, Cesar, and April. Opening his eyes to tell them to shut the hell up, his body felt stiff. And his eyes refused to open. With a quick flex he broke free of his cocoon. Dragging his hand across his faced he picked of the harden black substance that caked on his body. Now able to see. The face of Miranda, Cesar and April were of utter shock. Looking around at the evolving people on the floor of the LMTV, Bayek had and epiphany.

"Cesar, did Hershel give Maggie a bath after you found us" Bayek asked him

Cesar though t for a moment and nodded his head in affirmation. "Interesting," Bayek replied "Where are we now?"

"Were still on interstate 20, its been mostly clear so far, beside some of the cars we had to move. But, had to change course and settle for Jackson instead of Montgomery. Every exit leading that way was backed up" April answered without hesitation. For the couple of hours that Bayek was down she had been driving the lead vehicle.

"That was a good call. But I meant specifically, Truck stop, in the middle of the interstate, what?" Bayek clarified his question

"Truck stop. We're refueling and resting." Cesar answered this time. "Do you want people on the bikes again. There's been a couple of people volunteering to be scouts.

"Yeah, use all of the bokes. And send them 30 mins in advance. We don't want them to get far ahead. But its enough to give us and early warning" Bayek pushed him self and then asked for a jug of water.

Power the water on the evolved people. The black cocoon started to soften, and the first person moved the arms to break free. Bayek did the same thing to the remaining five evolving people. Pulling his Ka-bar knife from his t.h.i.g.h Bayek was ready to kill.

It took a while, but they finally started to break through. Bayek concluded that their cocoon was much thicker than his. Three broke through one after the other. The last to still struggled. If Bayek followed the concept of butterflies. There was always a possibility that a person would die in their Cocoons. Bending down to cut one open. Cesar and April had pistol pointed at its head. Skillfully gliding the blade across the face of the cocoon. Bayek placed his blade on the bed of the LMTV. With on hand on its throat , the other hand pulled open the cocoon at the incision. The person struggled to move as Bayek pressed his waited. Down. Feeling the strength, Bayek applied more pressure.

Ripping the cocoon open. A woman's head jerked up. Here eyes wide and mouth fulling open taking in as much air as possible, in the shortest amount of time. Looking at her eyes, Bayek saw another anomaly in this world. Her eyes were now silver. Looking at the other three from the cocoons, Their eyes were silver as well. Making another mental note Bayek moved on to the last cocoon that need extra assistance as well. Before he made it. The cocoon shattered and a bald woman with pale skin, moon eyes, and solid physique. Jumped out of the cocoon over the railing of the LMTV

This proved one of Bayek's theory. The variants aren't stupid.

"I thought you could sense those things!" Cesar asked, more like screamed

"The cocoon's, they mess with my readings. I sense death, but once they emerge, I sense life. " Bayek explained

"So, what do we do now?" Miranda Asked

"We hunt it." April answered with a frown on her face.

Bayek assigned people to guard the new evolved. While hi, April, and a team went out.

"This way, we need to hurry!" Bayek could out. And the team started to pick up the pace. Variants were fast. But not faster than eyes could see. Especially in open area. You could see them running at in human speed crossing the land. And a.s.s a new variant, she was weaker.

It took about 20 minutes to catch up to the variant. When Bayek and his team found her, she was throwing up parts of herself.

"She needs to eat, the one I saw the FEMA camp had walker bodies every. It was devouring them like it was trying to curve an insatiable hunger." Bayek told every

"Then that's good, they can kill each other off" April chimed in

"No, only a few were eaten to death, it looked like over time the hunger died down and the variant eat just enough to keep its lesser kin functional."

"That's f.u.c.k.i.n.g sick, man." Bayek turned to look at the guy that spoke. He was young whit boy. Looked about 18 years old. Meeting eyes with Bayek shook him a little "I mean, Colonel..." he corrected himself

"That's not why I'm looking at you. You have balls. Hunting a variant at such a young age. Not like we've been doing this for a long time. But older men choose not to come. Well done" Bayek turned around to kill the sick variant, then put the body over his shoulder to take it back to the convoy.

Ten minutes away a deafening gut filled roar charged through the air.

"Now that's a healthy variant, at least one more than capable slaughter every human not evolved. . we need to get back now!" The team jump into overdrive and sprinted as fast as they could. While Bayek revolved his qi and shot off into the distance.

The truck stop that the convoy had stopped at was just off the interstate. The were starting gear so they could get back on the road as soon as Bayek and his team got back. Cesar had already sent on the scouts on the motorcycle as Bayek instructed. With everything stowed away, the convoy waited.

RRAAAAAHHHHHH! The sound of the beast sent a bolt of lightning through people's body, coming down from the sudden shock, the experience soldiers exited the vehicles and posted with their weapons ready to go. Every angle around the convoy was covered. If it was anything else. The convoy would have been safe.

Never did they expect Two of the fabled variants to be walking down the exit from interstate 20. A couple of them thought the same thing 'They've been stalking us.' The two variants were n.a.k.e.d, their skin appeared tough to the touch yet smooth. They were a pale grayish color with black burn scares running across their bodies and were hairless from head to toe.

The woman's b.r.e.a.s.t were firm in pert. Ye,t no a.r.e.o.l.a or n.i.p.p.l.e, their s.e.x.u.a.l organs were there. But sealed off, mother nature obviously did not intend for them to reproduce. The female had a smooth mound and male just a rod as if they were both made from clay. Their moon eyes observed the convoy. It made the humans feel like ants. Insignificant beings.

The variants backs curved as the lurched forward. "RRAAAHH!" , stepping off they sprinted towards the convoy like linebackers

"KILL!!!!"
