Adventures Of Bayek: Through The Void And Beyond

Chapter 33 - Battle Louisiana: Before the Sunsets

Worried about the unusual behavior of the walkers, and the fate of Louisiana. Bayek got his convoy back on the road. While April handled her responsibilities, leading the convoy. Bayek lead a newly formed Omega squad as scouts while the evolving personnel were kept under Commander Coffee's supervision.

Although, 20 miles of road had been cleared by Bayek, he still took appropriate precautions. Now traveling in what is known as a wedge formation. Omega squad was traveling at a fast speed to get ahead of whatever impending danger that was awaiting Bayek's gut.

Tuscaloosa, Alabama....

Meridian, Mississippi....

Jackson, Mississippi... The convoy finally stopped. Silent the entire way and with any obstacles barring their path. The convoy was on edge. Reaching Jackson, Mississippi in record time. Bayek stopped the convoy and called a commanders meeting while the convoyed took a beat.

"Huh... Coffee, brief me on the evolved." Bayek ordered

"Well, what can I say. They're nothing like us. The trip was a quarter after an hour, so it's not enough time for them to complete their transition, but the cocoon has already formed-- The three wounded are stable, no signs of evolving, they missed the breaking point when they went down in battle. I'm also not clearing them for battle. They each underwent amputation. Fortunately, there is no presence of Z-bacteria in them at the moment" Coffee took a seat after she said her piece.

Nodding his head, Bayek pressed his hands against the table and rose from his seat. Pulling out a marker, Bayek began to draw on a large overhead projector sheet. "Okay, from Birmingham, we had to double back to Jacksonville, Alabama. As you all know it was a wonderful stay and I had the chance to make great progress in a war against our extinction.

It's now spring, so we're back on the road. From Jacksonville, we went around Birmingham, Alabama. Some ways down the interstate, we encountered sporadic herds, displaying unusual behavior. They seem to be heading south, where? I have no idea. The Omega squad lead by me. Engaged the herd, pulling them from whatever trance had control over them. We fought, and have the team died and you all know the rest." Bayek took a breather and looked around for anyone that had questions so far.

"After I leave you all in the commander's tent. I went out and cleared approximately 20 miles of road." The commanders around the table dawned shocked expression and their c.h.e.s.t became heavy.

Bayek continued "Yeah... If there was a f.u.c.k.i.n.g army of walkers, I'm sure you all would feel much better. Oddities are our enemy in this world, that's why I stopped the convoy. We travelled to Tuscaloosa, then to Meridian, finally stopping here in Jackson, Mississippi. That's about 185 miles walker free."

"But I thought you said, the walkers were traveling south in large numbers?" a commander asked Bayek, a little confused

"I know what I said, and that's why I'm worried as well. We have over 100 miles to reach Louisiana. And I believe, whatever is guiding the walkers to south is strong and intends to use the breakthrough strategy. It's allowing us to advance. When we were in too deep, hordes will attack from the rear blocking our escape, forcing us into whatever war zone it has prepared for our arrival. "

"General! We have to turn back! Abandon Louisiana!" the commanders protested in unison.

Bang! The sound of April striking the table resounded throughout the commander's tent

"All of you shut the hell up. Do you really think that little of the General? haha do you actually think, that our lives are our own? It's not. it's all barrowed time, given to us. By the grace of General Bayek. So, sit down, Shut up, or kill yourselves. So, that my General can reclaim his time. " Everything about April in this moment sent chills down everyone's spine, and the temperature in the tent fell at breakneck speed.

Bayek watched, expressionless as the commanders regained their composure and took their seats. "I have no plan to get us all killed. That is why Louisiana in our best bet. as we speak, scouts are gathering intelligence. And I plan to send Coffee and a team to Shreveport, Louisiana with communication specialists to set up towers along the way and gather more information. I'm officially putting the convoy on standby until both teams return." Bayek rose from his seat, and all the commanders rose in response as Bayek left the tent.

Meanwhile, in Georgia, USA

A blonde-haired girl could be seen running through woods at top speed. She was quick and nimble, as if she had spent her life as a running through the woods. In her right hand, she clutched a knife while her left hand clutched a conch shell. On her tail were five walkers giving chase.

The sound of labored breath could be heard as she weaved her way through the trees. Coming to a complete stop. The young lady climbed a tree, gathering air in her lounges, she put her small lips to the conch shell and blew. The sound of a horn reverberated throughout the woods. The conch shell was a natural made horn.

Attracting walkers in the area to her location. About a mile away, her group was preparing to leave an old house they had taken shelter in. During the night, the group had woken to find themselves surrounded.

"That's Beth... She made it, when the rest of the walkers begin to move, that's when we escape this shit hole. Daddy, you and Carol stay with Lori. Rick and Carl, to the left . Alexandria and Glen take the right. Daryl and T-dog can lead the way, Andrea and I will take the rear. It's called a diamond formation. The pregnant lady is in the center. Got it?" The woman issue orders was Maggie Greene, now evolved, she is the strongest soldier. This took a lot of weight off of Rick's shoulders, though the apocalyptic world still took its toll on the once kindhearted man.

"Then you'll go back for Beth." Hershel replied as he grabbed his bags.

"Of course, Daddy. She's my sister..." Maggie replied a little offend. During the winter months, things got hard for their group, Maggie became noticeably callous

Soon the walkers began to move in the direction of the horn. Maggie and her group shoot out of the house and to the vehicles that they traveled in, dropping walkers one by one. Safely in the vehicles, Maggie sent the group on their way while she went to Beth's aid.

Sometime later in Georgia...

"We'll stay her tonight. Hershel, if you and Daryl don't mind hunting before the sun goes down, it would be much appreciated." Rick spoke while he set up camp.

During the hunting trip Hershel and Daryl stumbled upon the Meriwether County Correctional Facility, For the first time in a long time, they saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

Jackson, Mississippi: The General's Convoy

"General Bayek, the Omega squad is back, and they look scared shit less." A grunt informed Bayek.

It's been two weeks since he sent that squad out. Bayek wanted a very detailed report, so the team decided to take their time.

When the Omega squad entered the commander's tent, they briefed Bayek on everything they saw. And what they saw--was hell on earth.

"Thank you, soldiers. Go get some rest" Bayek replied and produced a deep sigh when he was once again alone.

According to the scouting mission. Louisiana was the war zone that Bayek figured it was. The presence of an enemy was becoming all the more obvious. Hordes were gathering in Baton Rouge, only a few scouts made it through to push for New Orleans. The rest were forced to return. The walkers seemed to be forming a large perimeter around Baton Rouge, as a result it gave survivors the impression the Louisiana was walker free until they got too deep into enemy territory and realized their mistakes.

All the way in Shreveport, Louisiana. Commander Coffee had was setting up the final communications tower.

"Omega. This Alpha-1. do you copy?"

"Omega. This Alpha-1. Do you copy?"

"Loud and clear Alpha-1. Congratulations on your delivery. Over"

"Thank you, Omega. The pillars are standing tall. Awaiting orders. Over"

".... Alpha-1. based on intel. There should be no activity in the port. The Eagle wants that nest. Over"

"Roger, Alpha-1. Over and Out"

Commander Coffee and her team spent the next week getting every tower up and running, turning Shreveport into the General's new communication hub.

During the convoy's time waiting, tension was at an all-time high. The evolving soldiers had yet to complete their transitions. Unknown to Bayek, the Goddess Gaia was purposefully suppressing their evolution. It was her way of crippling humanity once again. She could not directly kill them, but she could make it harder for them to survive.

When the cocoons of the evolving finally begun to crack. Bayek felt a cold energy spread through the camp. And at that very moment, Shreveport Communications hub activated, and the convoy received a distress signal.
