Chapter 19 - the gibsons

"They are here." Samuel states after a moment of listening to whatever sound he can hear. I too try to grasp something but all I can hear is the monotonous tick-tock of the clock hung on a wall.

Nicholas sighs heavily and strolls to the main door not before passing me a deadly glare. I return by rolling my eyes which makes a muscle in his jaw twitch. Hah!

"Play along," I hear Samuel whisper. He takes me by surprise when he wraps an arm around my waist, pulling me closer. I almost jump at his touch. Looking up at his face, I see a nasty smirk plastered upon it.

"What are you-" I begin to protest while trying to push him away but I'm interrupted by the doorbell.

Nicholas opens it immediately and in enters a young girl of around my age followed by a middle-aged man with greying hair holding a lot of bags. On spotting Nicholas, she immediately encloses her arms around his neck and pulls him into a tight hug. To my surprise I see his face bloom into a wide smile which I must say is equally charming when compared to Samuel's.

Behind them the man who I suppose is the girl's father clears his throat which makes Nicholas let go of her but the girl still keeps one of her arms around his neck. "Mr. Gibson, how was the trip?" Nicholas questions in a cool voice to which the man answers with a happy smile, "It was great, Nick! You would've loved the place. It's a pity you couldn't accompany us but you see it didn't really feel like you weren't there since Penelope couldn't stop talking about you!" They all laugh and I watch the scene with my eyebrow raise by an inch.

He keeps the smile for the whole conversation and I can't help but notice it doesn't look as genuine as it did last night when I talked to him for the first time.

Who is this girl?

My eyes instantly snap to Samuel who is standing beside me, an arm still wrapped around my waist. Although I'm tempted to ask him to let go, I don't because it feels way too comfortable and nice.

"So they're like… umm together?" I whisper to Samuel who is watching the pair smile at each other with heart-eyes. He nods, not taking off his gaze from the couple.

"So she is a vampire as well?" What are the odds of meeting three vampires in a single day in a town with a total population of only about 3000 people? God is being way too generous to me today.

"Penny!" Samuel exclaims as he ambles towards the pair, still not letting go of his arm which held my waist securely thus dragging me along as well.

The girl glances in our direction and when she spots Samuel her smile widens even more. "Hey Sammy!" She greets with equal enthusiasm and I just stand watching the two talk rather awkwardly.

My eyes move to Nicholas and I see he has his own fixed right on my waist. It's probably just the effect of the evening sunshine but I almost see his smile flicker for a milli-second.

When I move them back to the brunette beauty standing in front of me, I notice her looking at me with a nervous smile playing on her plump lips. Samuel takes his time to realise but when he does he chuckles nervously and states, "Umm well, this is Penelope aka Penny and this is uh…" he hesitates.

He doesn't know your name yet! He should probably introduce you as 'human blood-bag'!

"I'm Diana." I answer with a fake warm smile before it gets very awkward.

Samuel chuckles nervously yet again. Tightening his grip, he pulls me even closer and then with a coy smile announces, "Yes! Diana. My Diana… er- my girlfriend."
