Carnage In Another World

Chapter 10 - 10: New Discoveries

Adrian became slack jawed. This was something completely unexpected. [To think, there were even more features that I haven't unlocked yet!] he exclaimed to himself on the inside.

[map] A map, showing all of the faldor region, was displayed in front of him. Adrian began playing with the map features. He learned he could zoom in and out, plot way points, and save locations with different icons. He could also see buildings, including his current location. The only thing he could not see were non living things, no people.

When he finally closed the map, he was reminded of how useful the pause feature was. Adrian had been toying around with the map, for what seemed like almost an hour, except the world only moved when the interface was closed. It was unlikely it took even a nanosecond in real time.

"Hey Martin! Do you know where I might be able to find something like a training manual, would you?" Adrian asked.

"Do you mean technique manuals? hmm..." Martin replied while scratching his beard. " You might be able to find some at the bookstore if you're lucky?"

"Really? Where is the book store?" Adrian asked, his eyes gleaming in excitement.

"In the back of the marketplace.. It's a little worn down. People don't read too many books around here, you know."

"Thanks again,Martin" Adrian praised, turning to ran out of the guild hall in search of the book store.

"Funny, kid" Martin laughed as he watched Adrian run off like he just won the lottery.

Elain had just arrived in town after being gone for nearly 3 days. As she walked into town, she spotted Adrian running past, brimming with excitement. She couldn't help but shake her head and giggle internally. Heading down the road, she stopped by the guild hall to see if there were any interesting missions. As most of the missions were just basic bounty missions, "Of course there's never any good missions around here.." she sighed to herself.

After deciding not to take any missions since there were none she would find worth her while, she left the guild hall. "I might as well just head home for now I guess." she shrugged her shoulders and took off on her way to her house. Upon arrival, she headed straight up the path and walked through the door leading inside.

"Young miss, there was a person from the demon hunters guild who came by earlier," the young maid from before informed her as she walked in.

"Oh, really? What for?" Elian asked

"I'm not too sure, but he left a message with your father, miss." the young maid replied.

"Well, I was heading up there anyway to check on the old man. Has he been eating right? Whenever he has his head stuck in those books, he neglects his health." Elian asked.

"Yes, young miss, I have made sure to pester him to eat until the point he threatened to fire me." the maid replied, with a laugh.

"Okay, thanks Jamie, and don't worry if father ever really does fire you. I'll beat him up until he changes his mind." Elian said jokingly as she flexing her muscles.

"Young miss, you shouldn't joke like that." Jamie scolded while trying to stifle a laugh.

"Well, I'll let you get back to work then . I'll go check on my father." as she ran up the stairs.

Standing in front of the book store, Adrian had a smile full of expectations. [I hope I'm right] he thought to himself, as he entered the shop. The book store was fairly dusty, with a thin layer on most things. "Excuse me is the owner here?"

"One moment, I'll be right there." a frail sounding voice said. Soon followed by a little old lady came, around a corner. "how can I help you?"

"I was wondering if you had any technique manuals for sell here." adrian replied.

"Actually, I do have a couple around here somewhere, let me see,'' the old woman said as she pulled out a dusty rolodex. "Ah, yes just over here young man." she then shuffled her way around the store until she found the shelf she had been looking for."Ah, here we are. It seems I have two sword arts and an archery skill."

As the archery skill was pretty much useless, he out right ignored it. However, the sword arts on the other hand made him quite happy. "How much for both the sword arts?" Adrian asked.

"4000 pieces each" she said out right.

Hearing that number Adrian almost lost his balance, [4000 my ass], he thought."Ah.. Well in that case, I'll take my leave"

"500 each!" the old woman shouted.

Hearing that, he nearly fell over again "50 each" he countered.

"50 each?.. Why do you wish to pick on this old woman.. 400 that's my bottom line" the old woman said dramatically.

[This lady is obviously a con-woman, but I can play her games too.] Adrian thought confidently, [I may have manners, but I to have a bottom line]

"25 each." he told her, yielding a blank stair.

"2...5.." she coughed, clutching her heart, pretending to have a heart attack "Don't say such things again, or you may kill this old woman! Do you want that on your conscience? 300 each" She demanded.

[4000 , 500, 400, 300, what happened to her bottom line?] Adrian thought steadily losing his patience. "100 each, take it or I walk out"

"Deal... no take backs!!" she shouted.

[Why do I have the feeling I got ripped off still?] Adrian thought to himself. He tossed the money on the counter and left, knowing if he stayed any longer he really might strangle the old bat.

Once he was out of the shop, he opened his inventory and as soon as the books touched the interface, they disintegrated.

<you have unlocked the ability menu>

<you have gained a new ability: Fury>

< Fury: lasts for three attacks after the first. Each swing while fury is active is 1.2 times stronger than the strike before >

<you have gained a new passive ability: Skull crack>

< Whenever you strike an enemy in the head with the flat side of your blade, you have a 25% chance you stun them for a short time, as well as a 5% chance to score a double critical hit.>

"These abilities would be better suited for striking someone with a brick, or a baseball bat" Adrian grumbled to himself, looking at the skills he spent nearly all his current money on in disappointment
