Daily Life Of A Ponytail Girl

Chapter 20 - The Fourth Challenge

"I think we are nearing our destination!" Yūi spoke as the girls walked through yet another hallway. "The letter said we'd have to get to one of these classrooms I think"

As the girls were walking, Aoi suddenly spoke up.

"Hey guys, would any of you mind letting me take care of our next opponent?"

The other girls stopped and looked at Aoi with questioning expressions.

"Any particular reason for that?" Yukkuri asked.

'Well. . ."Aoi began. "So far all three of you have taken down one opponent for us. I would really like to also prove my worth to us."

"Hmmm. . ." Yūi gave thought to Aoi's words. "You don't really need to prove your worth to any of us to be quite honest, but if you'd really like to take on our next opponent, then we'll count on you!"

At Yūi's words, the other two girls nodded. With determination in her voice, Aoi spoke.

"With the next opponent, I will make sure to bring us victory"

"Speaking of opponent, that must be our next one." Akane spoke as she pointed at a girl laying on her back on a table. The girl had short black hair, and above her white blouse, she wore a choker around her neck.

"So. . ." She said as she slowly got off the table. "I am Yoru Mari from class 2-B. You must be my opponents."

Aoi replied, staring straight into the girl's purple eyes.

"Y- yes we are. I am Aoi Kami, and I'll be your opponent during this match."

"Well, the thing about this match is. . ." Yoru slowly started walking forwards.

"Prez said that I was supposed to put a stop to you guys, but to be honest. . . I don't exactly feel like trying."

Yoru started casually making her way towards the exit of the hall and passed the four girls.

"You four can see this as a free win or a forfeit on my part. Oh, I'd prefer if you don't tell Yaruki about this, I'd probs get in trouble with her if she found out I just let you pas-"

"Please wait!"

Suddenly, Yoru got interrupted. When she looked over her shoulder to see who was speaking, she saw Aoi standing there looking at her with serious look in her eyes.

"Please give me the opportunity to be your opponent!" Aoi spoke out loud.

Surprised, Yoru replied. ". . . Didn't you hear me? I said I won't put up a fight."

"But you can not just do that! I have totally prepared myself to take you up on a challenge!

Suddenly, Aoi bowed deeply towards Yoru. "Please do not let my efforts be in vain!"

There was a few seconds of silence. Then, Yoru replied. "Heck no."

At the harsh reply, Aoi jolted back as if the words had struck her like a dagger in the stomach.

As Yoru started walking again, Aoi threw herself at Yoru's legs and grabbed on tight.

Caught off guard, Yoru tried to reply quickly. "H- hey, what are you doing you weirdo! Let go!"

"Fine, you want a challenge, you can get one! But only to get you off my back, 'cause you're so persistent!"

In delight, Aoi let go of the girl and stepped back.

"I couldn't ask for anything more!" she said with a big smile.

At Aoi's smile, Yoru looked a bit surprised.

"You want me to challenge you that badly? But why?"

Aoi balled her fists. "So far I have let myself be carried by my teammates, now I want to prove myself as useful to them."

"You realize that by forcing me into challenging you, you're only hindering your team right?"

". . . That's beside the point." Aoi swiftly replied.

Yoru let out a sigh.

"Well, if I have to then. . ."

"Hmmm. . ." Aoi observed Yoru.

"You know, you almost come over as a bit of a tsundere when you are behaving like that."

Yoru started blushing at hearing that.

"S- stop saying such weird things already! You want a challenge right, and I'm preparing one for you!"

As Yoru stuck her hand into her pocket, Aoi asked several questions.

"So what are we gonna do? Which skills are gonna be test? You are not planning on cheating, are you? And on that note, don't you dar-"

"Head or tails, choose one."

". . . Eh?"

Yoru's hand had returned from her pocket holding a coin.

"You know how a coin flip works right? Now choose quickly or we won't do this challenge at all."

In a panic, Aoi quickly replied.

"Ehr ehr ehr. . . Tails!"

Yoru flung the coin into the air, and when it landed on her hand again, the winner was. . .

"Head."

Yoru said it in a completely monotone voice.

"I. . . Lost. . ."

In disappointment, Aoi sunk to her knees.

"You sure did girl, now as prize, I get to go as far away as possible from you and you won't follow me, got it?" Yoru replied as she started making her way towards the exit again.

"You. . . Not gonna make us leave for losing the challenge?" Yūi asked with a questioning expression.

"I already told you several times that I couldn't care less about what transpires here."

Yoru started walking again.

"By the way, blue hair."

Aoi looked up at Yoru back. Yoru rotated her head to look over her shoulder.

"Try to keep up that determination you have. You make for some. . . interesting company to say the least."

As Aoi was looking at Yoru, she could swear she'd seen a slight smile, but before she could get a good look, Yoru had already returned her head and started walking again.

Aoi let out a short sigh, then proceeded to smile a bit herself.

"Oh, and a few parting words."

With her thumb, Yoru pointed at a door behind her.

"Behind that door, you'll find Yaruki and with her your final challenge. Toodles."

With those final words, Yoru made her way out of the hallway.

All four girls stared at the door.

"So we're finally here. . ." Yūi said.

"Our final challenge. . ."
