Dream Life

Episode XIV: The Value of the Samurai

After I finished asking Byron, the mercenary, about the Norton Chamber of Commerce, he asked me to talk to him.

Byron corrects his absence and turns to me with a strange face, "I also need to speak to Master Zacharias from my side, will you listen to me?"

"Oh, I don't mind," I nodded, wondering what I was talking about.

Byron, who saw it, also nodded and looked me in the eye with an even more serious look. And with a quiet but powerful voice,

"Is it possible for me to serve the Lockhart family, Master Zacharias"

I didn't know what his question was intended to be.

"I'm not the man, I'm not the man. So serving the Lockhart family means absolutely nothing to me."

"I know that. But I'd like to know if I, a man named Byron Seedorf, deserve to serve the prestigious Lockhart family of Wu, or even Master Zakarias himself."

(That's a tough question. If I say I deserve it, Byron will have hope. But I don't have the authority to admit to the Lockhart family, and I don't really think about hiring people myself. That's why, speaking of no, it would hurt his pride. In fact, this man can do enough as our squire. Especially given the growing population of villages ahead of us, there is an absolute need for a well-thought-out squire. If I'm a man, I can tell you to come visit me whenever you want. but......)

I had trouble judging and sent Guy my gaze.

Guy takes my gaze, but he showed no more will.

(That's not what you should ask Guy. He's just in trouble. If you only serve the Lockhart family, if I recommend it, you won't see him or your father. So far, there's nothing wrong with more squire, so look at the arms and the crowd, it's likely he'll be hired. But that's not the problem. The problem is that you want to serve me, my second son...)

I returned the question to Byron the other way.

"Let me check first. Why are you at the Lockhart house? And why would you want to serve me? Besides, in my opinion, Byron, you used to serve some country. That wasn't a soldier of Ping, either, was it in quite a position?

He gives a slightly surprising look and snorts.

"Again, you can't hide anything. As I said, I was in the border guard of the Kingdom of Kaum, Fort Toa. civilians, but this still served as a captain with a hundred men. But with the invasion of the Demons five years ago..."

Here's what his story was.

As an officer of the border guard of the Kingdom of Kaum, he was guarding the border with the demonic land of Kwaedam Tenebre, Fort Toa.

He had complained to his superiors about the need for reconnaissance to Kwaedam Tenebre. But he was crushed by the commander of maniacism.

And five years ago. Following an ambush by the Demons, Fort Toa fell. That's when he managed to get his allies away while losing half of his men.

After the fall of the fort, colleagues and men who found out he was complaining about the need for reconnaissance tried to sue the commander's demise to the upper ranks of the army. But the high-ranking commander sent his men and colleagues to the battlefield, along with Byron, to hide his demise. As a result, many of his colleagues, his men, scattered on the battlefield.

In the end, the Kingdom of Kaum succeeded in gaining reinforcements from various countries to attack back and defeat the Demonic Army. But even in the showdown that decided the victory, the Battle of Acree Chain, he lost many of his people, and questioned being in the Army.

Troubled he decided to quit the army and began to lead a second life as a mercenary. And in just three years he became a mercenary headed by fifteen men.

"... I thought at that time. Trying to serve someone I can trust. I always think you're the one who grows up. But that's not what's important to me."

He cuts his words there and smiles.

"You also responded well to my men the other day. He didn't even look disgusted by the familiar attitude of his deputy, Curtis, and he shared my thoughts with me, thinking about his pride. That's when I thought. If you're this guy, you'll have to betray your men."

I shake my head in haste for his overrated.

"I'm not who I was able to be. Besides, that's not what you say to a 10-year-old."

"Age doesn't matter," Byron shook his neck sideways.

"Besides, I'm the second son. My brother sincerely congratulates me on succeeding the Lockhart family. So there's little chance I'm going to succeed the Lockhart family. There's nothing good about following me like that."

Byron doesn't break his grin on my words, he shakes his neck even more.

"It doesn't matter what that is. Because I just want to bet my life on you."

I was cramped with answers.

(I'm honestly glad you bought me that far. But I'm only ten. Besides, I have a God-given mission. Given that, it is difficult to respond to this man's thoughts......)

"Okay. Let me ask you one more thing. What are your men going to do now, to make you my subordinate? If the admiring captain quits, he'll have trouble. Besides, don't you have a contract with Lord Norton?

"That's not a problem. I'm only going to pull my hand, at least after I've made Curtis a one-man captain. Because I believe that's the responsibility of those who have men."

(Surely this man can't be used by incompetent commanders who are just high stature. But can you use it on me? Just to be clear, I've always been bad at using people. Now is the time for Nicholas and Guys to help, but that's just because they have the name Lockhart too. But that name doesn't make sense if my brother inherits the trace...)

And again, keep a close eye on Byron.

(But you've really done something without your body, the Kingdom of Kaum. This man would admire his men, and judgment would be accurate... but why are so many men captains of about fifteen mercenaries?

"I'm sorry for so many times. Let me just ask you one last thing. You would have bound more mercenaries. Why are you satisfied in this little neighborhood of fifteen?

"It's a buyout," Byron laughs as he shakes his neck sideways.

"I just gathered at my place before I knew it. Besides, I can't handle any more men than I left an organization called the military. If you want to keep an eye on each person, this is the limit."

I was surprised by the answer and lost my word.

(If I lost my adorable men, I would never think of having one again... with all this care, even if I were a servant of the Lockhart family (of ours), I would soon show my head)

I decided to return the answer to Byron's question.

"The answer to an earlier question…"

To my words, Byron squeezes his expression.

"I've known you for days. Still, it's hard to say that I understand who you are. But..."

To the words he drops his shoulders slightly.

"... this is just my intuition, but I think a man named Byron Seedorf is a man worth serving the Lockhart family..."

Byron said, "Bye!" and shines his eyes. But I'm going to ignore it and move on.

"... but I say no to serving me personally. You know why?

"Master Zacharias is your second son, and you don't want to have a wave wind in your parents' house..."

I nod, "Yes." And I'll explain what I think.

"My brother is kind, and he is a wise man. If you declare to serve me personally and say you want to be a servant of the Lockhart family, you won't disagree. My father or grandfather may not admit to that. But my grandfather and my father are buying me for some reason. Admit your strength, your personality, after I've recommended it, and you're likely to take it up with your squire. Besides, my grandfather would say this to my brother.“ Show this man his own skill. "..."

Byron says nothing and listens to me in silence.

"… even if my grandfather said so, a hero called the Lion Heart, there should be a quarrel with the young squire who gave birth. Indeed, our squire is in unusual awe of the Lockhart family, especially my grandfather..."

Guy nods small at that word.

"... so even more, you shouldn't want to admit a man who scorns his brother, who is a man. And I'm not the one standing in the meantime. It would be my father and my brother. My brother, in particular, should try to be recognized by you. [M] You'd think a lord's man would do something strange to his squire, but that's the kind of man he is."

Guy nods and Byron shakes his head sideways small.

"Then I cannot serve Lord Zacharias."

As I was about to say, Byron said with a bulky, and slightly lonely look, "Okay. Let's give up," he said.

I nodded small, but when I saw his expression, I accidentally said, "There's only one way".

"First, get recognized by my grandfather without giving me my name. Meet my grandfather Govan Lockhart on his own, and make him recognize that power."

And stabbing a nail at Guy asking beside him, "Don't talk to me, either," he said.

"Squeeze your wits and meet Lionheart Govan. And make them recognize their power. In that case, stand in the same position as Guy. But being recognized by my grandfather is not a living thing. Hey, Guy?

Guy replies with a nostalgic expression, "It took me about a year, too," he said.

Byron mutters, "Is it a year......"

"If my grandfather recognized me, my father would take it up with his squire, too. And be a squire and take a good look at the Lockhart family, the village of Rasmore. You know what it means to serve me and what I'm thinking. If you still want to serve me on top of that, I'll think about it. That sounds great, but now I can only say yes..."

Byron was nodding small to see if he had anything to think about.

To be honest, I don't know Byron very well.

I do think he's an excellent mercenary and a good commander for his men. But I don't know where his thoughts lie, how far I can trust him to really bring my story in anticipation of my future.

To be clear, I don't think I have eyes for people. But I can trust my eyes to dive into the training grounds and see my grandfather, who has struggled in a small pioneering village. Even for my father. Hiding in the shadow of my grandfather is hard to notice, but I don't think it compares to those lords there.

I have no words to give back if you say round toss, but I thought I would ask my grandfather or father to look at a man named Byron. And I don't care what kind of thoughts you have, if it's a talent recognized by both of you, it'll help you develop Lockhart territory.

If you become a servant of the Lockhart family, you will know who you are now, and who you will be next. Now Byron is just looking at the Lockhart family through the presence of me. That's why I wanted to save you some time.

Then we chatted for about thirty minutes before breaking up with Byron.

Head to the Norton Chamber of Commerce and apply to see Henry Norton, chairman.

I went into a Chamber of Commerce building, but just having two employees in a small office space makes me feel like a normal private home. Norton arrived as soon as he was led to the reception room by an employee of the Senpai.

"Welcome," he said, welcoming all the rubbing hands.

I immediately got into business and started talking about transporting Scotch.

"... so I want you to pick up our liquor in the city of Kilnarek and transport it to an inn called the Nest of the Arid Eagle in the South End. What do you think?

Norton nods loudly, "Let's accept it".

"For once, I would like to visit the village of Rasmore and say hello to your lord, your predecessors to cover transportation costs, etc."

I didn't even bother to go to the village of Rasmore, and I said, "If it's just my father, I'll ask Kilnarek to leave."

Norton was surprised by the words and fearlessly said, "Your lord will work hard… it is all I have to do to get out…"

My common sense doesn't seem to be adapting to this world's identity system yet. Even in inns and shops, I'm going to use polite language, and I can't calm down enough when I speak to the first older person in a great tone.

In order to change the subject, I asked about the cost of transporting goods to and from Kilnarek.

"By the way, if you give me Kilnarek, how much will you need for transportation?

"Right. Depending on the size of the barrel, did I just say 100C (krona) per barrel (= 100,000 yen)? However, even if the barrel is damaged, it cannot be compensated."

(That's pretty cheap. Aren't you going to barely go up profitably?

"As for this one, it helps, but doesn't that make less money?

"It's certainly more profitable to carry a sword. But for our Chamber of Commerce, we think it's worth more than that, so we want to accept it..."

After all, it seems that Norton's aim is to create a relationship with the Lockhart family and to better the hearts and minds of the Dwarves of Ars. Exactly. I didn't tell you about the transport of Scotch to Ars on this occasion, but if I go to the village, I guess I'm going to tell you about it.

"By the end of August, Guy is scheduled to be back in the village. I'll write to your father so he can go to the village whenever he wants."

(Now “Scotch” 's entry into Periclitle is going to work out. After that, Father and Nicholas - Nicholas Garland, the housekeeper - will do well)

By the time I left the Norton Chamber of Commerce, it was past three p.m.

I tried to head south with the intention of going straight back to the inn. Liddy grabbed my arm.

"I haven't had a look at shopping yet. It's taken me a long time to get there."

Guy and I gave up on each other's faces and headed to the garment store so Liddy could pull us off.

Eventually, when I returned to the inn, it was after 6 p.m.

I'll report to the innkeeper, Yoan, that night that the transport of Scotch is likely to go well. I said the answer was fine ahead, but it seemed to have already come to a conclusion and he promised to put the scotch down at any time.

And the next day, almost a day, they accompanied Liddy's shopping. Guy had a tired look on his face, but Sharon had a pretty fun look on his face, so maybe he fitted in for some shopping pleasure.

(Speaking of which, you used to go out with your broken up daughter-in-law shopping. They pulled me around all day then, too. Maybe this is what women are like in every world...... but why are you so tired when you were supposed to be able to rest your body in Periclitle......)
