Fenrir: The Wolf Overlord

Chapter 10 - Giving Up

Cipher was at a loss of words. Things really never seemed to work in his favour.

"I am sorry."

After hearing the voice, he looked down at the girl who he didn't want to see ever again. She was grabbing onto his arms and stopping him from going anywhere.

"...Are you serious right now?"

"Yes. I am very serious."

She spoke out immediately. Cipher sighed, a sign that he was already close to losing his composure. He could have just freed himself forcefully but he didn't want to hurt this kind and naive girl, not again.

"Let go of me."

Cipher spoke out in an annoyed tone. He had tried his very best to sound neutral but a little amount of annoyance could not help but leak out from his tone.

"No, not until you promise to not leave."

He sighed once again. At the same time, he couldn't help but regret his decision of opening the door. But it wasn't like he was allowed to do anything else.

This girl just didn't know when to give up and kept on ringing the doorbell for a goddamn long time. Of course, he would be forced to open the door at some point.

'Annoying girl. Please just leave me alone.'

Cipher couldn't help but laugh at himself internally. He could have said all of his thoughts directly to this girl but he would basically be admitting to his fear. All in all, his foolish pride stopped him from saying anything that would lower him down.

The guilt present in his conscience also didn't fade away easily. And this feeling became his obstacle from pushing this girl away from him for another time.

After all, he knew that she wasn't thinking of hurting him but she was doing this for probably none other than him. Moreover, he realized that even though the girl was still a little expressionless, she had already taken down the fake mask she was wearing, surely because of what he said at that time.

So he felt even more guilty. He wore a mask to hide his real emotions himself but he criticised her for doing something similar. How can he not feel guilty?

'Argh!! You are really annoying. Just leave me alone.'

Cipher decided to stop thinking anymore as he even found his monologues really annoying. He sighed, probably for the last time and glared at the girl.

"What did you want to say? Do it quick."

"Let's be friends."

"....."

Cipher wavered at her words. He had already expected this response from her but hearing it was surprising in it's own way.

"...Friends, you say?"

He questioned out unsure and the girl nodded her head lightly. She then released his hand and formed a soft smile on her face.

"Yes, I want to be friends with you. I know you must be angry with me about what happened two days ago. I am really sorry for that.

I just realized that you were so similar to me when I lost my parents. I know the suffering, so I wanted to help you move on... But I only made you angry and frustrated.. I am really sorry."

"...."

Cipher was speechless. There was nothing he could think of saying in response. But there was something he could still try. He brought his hands to his face and hid his expression. Soon, he started laughing out.

"....."

"....I don't need your help. So, leave."

He spat out after he finished laughing. But the next second, he couldn't help but flinch. He slowly turned his head down to look at the soft hand that gently held his.

"How long are you going to lie to yourself?"

"....."

Cipher wavered once again and the girl took this chance to continue.

"I know. I know how you are feeling. That is just an act that you are forcing yourself to do. It looks very sad to me."

Her words were not really far from the truth. Knowing this, Cipher scoffed and pulled his hands away.

"Are you not trying to read my emotions? You will find out that you are greatly wrong. I am not sad at all. I am really angry and annoyed right now."

"I won't do that anymore. I don't want to make you angry."

"....."

"But I don't even need to try. Anyone will know whether you are angry or not, if they saw you.... You are..crying right now."

The girl finished in a low voice as she looked up at him with a gentle expression. Cipher was honestly surprised by her choice of words and he immediately brought his hands to his face. He then flinched greatly.

"..Why?"

Cipher could feel a tear dripping down on his cheeks. It was only one drop but it really was downright surprising for him.

Tears should be something which had dried out from his eyes a long time ago. The only time he knew himself crying was when he met Sorahiko for the first time. Remembering that, he intently stared at the girl.

The girl didn't turn away and also stared back in his eyes. After some time, she spoke out in a really sad tone.

"..I heard from Sir Torino that you don't have any friends."

"...."

Cipher immediately cringed and soon cursed the old man for speaking too much. He was the same as this girl. A naive old man who speaks freely to a person he has only met once.

"...I didn't speak about it before because I thought you might get angry. But now I know I have to say it."

But Cipher didn't stop listening to this girl. Honestly, he didn't even know why he was still listening to her.

But yeah, one thing was for sure. He had already given up on trying to get away from her. He had given up because he realized that he has already come to see this girl as someone irreplaceable, just like the old man.

It was really something unthinkable for him. He would have never expected to find someone as important, in such a short span of time, not once but twice. But it may be like this from the very start and he was the only one to not really know.

All of it was to be expected. Both the old man and this girl seemed to not care about his rowdy behaviours and only look at him as a whole.

It was a very pleasant yet dreadful feeling, even for him.

"Are you listening?"

Cipher was brought out of his thought when the girl waved her hands in front of him. He slightly nodded his head as he remembered her previous question.

The girl, in turn showed a genuine sweet smile and also nodded. She seemed to have realized that Cipher had grown a bit considering to her than before.

"I just wanted to say that I also don't have friends. So, since both of us don't have any friends, let's start with the two of us."

Cipher silently looked at the outstretched hand of the girl. He was tempted to grab it at this point but his fear stopped him for the last time.

'...Foolish. I am not a child anymore.'

After a while, he brought his hands forward and held her hand in his. He didn't care anymore. Yeah, he was still afraid of losing someone important but he knew the answer now.

'I just need to protect them this time, this time for sure.'

Cipher looked down at the girl who seemed to be extremely happy with a huge smile on her face.

"Can I call you 'Cipher'?"

"Yeah, Yui."

Yui gasped in shock at this moment. She looked at Cipher with wide eyes and spoke out shakily.

"Yo-you remember my name?"

"Of course."
