I Slept Through The Apocalypse

Chapter 3 - The End of the World (2)

A grey haired lady in her late 50's ran in to find the Principal screaming at the sky through the window. She was confused but kept her professionalism as she informed him, "Principal Hardy, all the students have been evacuated, we should hurry and join the rest of the staff in the emergency bunker."

Principal Hardy looked over at his secretary. He glanced back at the phone and sighed. Now's not the time to be stressing about females. I'm still a principal, even if the kids call me Mr. Bald and say "shine bright like a forehead" whenever I walk past them.

"Go on ahead Sandy, I have a few more things to take care of so I'll join you in a few minutes. Make sure you lock the bunker. I'll knock when I'm finished."

"But Principal―"

"Go." His face revealed how weary he was from … life. His younger self would have never imagined he'd become a bald principal. His eyes dulled as he escaped back into his own thoughts.

"..." Secretary Sandy knew that arguing was useless and scurried out of the room.

Principal Hardy watched her leaving silhouette knowing it was probably the last he'll see his secretary.

"Take care," he spoke softly.

His gaze swept across his room one last time, before stepping out of his office. He didn't head for the bunker however, and was pacing towards the ladder which ran up to the roof.

Once on top of the roof, He looked down at his high school campus. He had been here for 20 years, yet never took one step on the roof. He looked at the mountains in the far distance, the trees, the creek which ran alongside their school. "It's actually very peaceful up here," he thought, "the world sure is vast. It's a shame I wasn't able to explore it all. Maybe in the next life."

The green glow from the meteor had finally become extremely noticeable. He stared at it. It was a very strange meteor. His surroundings didn't feel any hotter. And he was pretty sure meteors don't have strange bright green glows.

Soon, the entire sky lit up into bright emerald flames, which stretched past the horizon. It was breathtaking, the deep emerald flames danced around excitedly in the sky.

Principal Hardy remained motionless on the roof as he watched the green flames in awe. "At least I get some fireworks before I die here," he smiled. It started to get a little warm.

Principal Hardy recalled his entire life. From birth till now, he was always working to please or benefit someone else. He never had the chance to reflect on his life or his actions throughout. He had wasted this life doing things that others wanted him to do, never what he wanted to do. He resolved in his next life he would do only what he wanted. As Principal Hardy lost himself in this thoughts his eyes suddenly focused. The green flames in the sky reflected from his eyes as he stared into the sky. He hopped onto the railing.

He screamed towards the heavens, "If I have a next life, I'll explore the vast oceans and continents! I'll become the world's most renowned explorer! Never, will I even rest one day. Not one stone will be left unturned on my explorations. This, I vow!"

The flames were getting closer as if engulfing him. His body now felt very warm.

He took one last glance at the world beneath him. He noticed something move under a tree not too far away from him as if it was disturbed by his shouting.

"Wait a minute…" Principal Hardy sweated, "is that a student?"

"The world is ending and this kid decides to take a nap. Even worse, he's such a loser that nobody bothered to wake him up. That's actually really sad when you think about it. Well, he's gone now too. There's not enough time to climb down there and drag him to the bunker."

He chuckled. That's some terrible bad luck. He felt like the kid had even worst luck than him, dying without any closure to the world. What kind of family and friends was he not able to say goodbye too before he decided to take that nap?

CRRAAAKK!

The sound shook the skies.

SHRIII!

Another loud, high-pitched sound followed.

Principal Hardy was startled. He had no idea what was happening. Since when were meteors so loud? Well, I'm not one to judge, I've never been hit by one before.

He looked back up at the sky to see, a huge crack in it! The meteor was cracking? He was able to see a hint of the sun's rays shining at him through the huge crack in the sky. It was quite a strange sight.

The skies above him shook again, and then… BOOM!

The huge meteor broke apart, the majority of the pieces flying far past the horizon until they became little green specks.

Principal Hardy didn't even have time to react when he realized one of the main broken-off specks were headed straight towards him. It grew larger and larger in his field of vision, until it was the size of a truck. "Well, I guess this is it."

He took one last glance at the sleeping student and his eyelids convulsed uncontrollably. The tree he was sleeping under was on fire! The grass surrounding him was on fire! He was even snuggling the grass like someone just dr.a.p.ed a warm quilt on him on a cold night!

"What the hec―" before he could finish his sentence the giant green ball of flames engulfed him.

Not soon, after the rest of the green particles hit their mark. The meteor which was as big as Texas didn't just hit one area like it was predicted. It shattered and rained upon the entire world. The world was bombarded with flaming green meteors the size of trucks. Cities were leveled to the ground as the Earth shook from the impact of the huge meteor. There were many areas with massive pits the size of small lakes. Every standing structure was decimated. From outer space, Earth burned with a rich, dark emerald green and for a moment, the world fell into silence.
