“It was such a beautiful island. Why’d you have to go and destroy it?

“Humbaba are the ones that built an illegal facility in a nature preserve. Humbaba should take responsibility.”

Akkad and the (provisional) American exchanged some light-hearted banter. 

The airplane that was apparently equipped with an anti-gravity device had kicked up a smokescreen of dust in the collision. 

However, through the dust clouds, light suddenly shined outwards. 

“He’s still alive after all that?”

The silvery light spread out over a wide perimeter once, before rapidly converging and forming the shape of a person. 

Gray appeared before us a second time, but a huge hole had been torn open in his abdomen, and the light was disappearing here and there from his body like it was full of craters.

“I am still alive, but I cannot fight any further.

Gray tilted his head with a bitter smile. 

“I have lost to your lot. However, leave Hiroto-san here. That person cannot live anywhere else but here.”

Gray, in a voice as solemn as a preacher’s sermon, made an announcement. 

“Hiroto-san. You’re pregnant. To ensure a safe birthing, you need Doktor Satow.”

“What did you say!?”

The fuck, is that. 

Androids can’t get pregnant. We cannot create life from our own flesh. 

Androids have to be “an existence exactly as humans have imagined”. 

Our natural reproduction by means of birth introduced too many uncertain genetic components. Otherwise, humans wouldn’t have been able to control android production. 

Akkad and his men also froze. The space between us was empty of even sound and as still as death; only Gray’s voice echoed out. 

“Doktor Satow said he noticed your intrinsic qualities, and bestowed upon you the ability to conceive. Because of you, androids will have a lineage of our own to continue into the future. 

He’s lying. There’s no way that’s possible. 

“You’re unstable because you’re still just a prototype, so we don’t know if you’ll be able to safely give birth. You have no choice but to rely on Doktor Satow.”

Gray’s voice clattered around in my head, sinking into the maelstrom of my mind.

I feel nauseous. My body began to shake violently. Pregnant. With a child. 

It’s already inside of my belly. 

Then my poor physical health that was so unusual for an android was because I was pregnant…?

“If there’s a child involved, then all the more! There’s no way I can leave Hiroto here!” Akkad suddenly shouted, embracing my shoulders with a strong grip. 

“You ignored Hiroto’s will, forcing him to get pregnant and more…! At what point will you people feel satisfied to stop stealing things from him!” 

Akkad rested a hand on my head and lowered his face towards me, peering down at me. 

“Hiroto, it’s okay. My company has plenty of brilliant researchers. Whatever choice you may make, we’ll be able to make it work one way or another.”

“They can’t match up to Doktor Satow. Hiroto-san, return to us.”

Gray stretched out his hand to me. 

The two argued violently, while my throat was so dry it closed up. 

What should I do? What’s going to happen to me? Will my own mind be decided for me…?

I forced my stiff tongue to move, and somehow managed to speak a few words to Gray.

“I, I… I don’t know anything outside of the organization. I might be able to genuinely believe Akkad. But I know that Humbaba are the ones that treat us, androids, as things without even batting an eyelash.” 

I grabbed Akkad’s hand. Akkad squeezed my hand back. 

“I’m going with Akkad.”

Gray reluctantly let his hand fall, and his chin pulled back.

“There’s nothing I can do. With my current power, I cannot win against Akkad. Hiroto-san, your womb was only just augmented a few days ago, so you should be fine for a little while. But please return before the birth.”

RIIINNNGGG

The moment the silver light faded, even from his eyes, Gray and Death Worm vanished. 

The stuff immediately following I remember almost nothing of. The people in the unit also floated along in a daze, but somehow we managed to safely retreat to Akkad’s company. 

“Alex is gonna be a dad…”

“Well, anyone can do it if they try.”

The others sneakily whispered.
