We heard a shout from ahead and ducked in time as the boats passed under a rocky outcropping while dodging tendrils of ivy. The boats docked themselves at an underground bay and we were greeted by a stern-looking woman, McGonagall, my mind filled in.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," said the large man, that led us here.

She nodded. "Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here." After she said those words, she motioned for us to follow her and explained on the way.

"Welcome to Hogwarts. The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room. The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."

We stopped before a door, that I recognized would lead us into the Great Hall. She told us to wait and use our time to "smarten up" and gave a redhead and a nervous blond boy a look.

The moment she left the hall erupted in nervous whispers about how we will be sorted. I snorted as I heard the redhead talk about a fight with a troll. "Yeah sure, because one's personality is tested by how one is smashed to pieces." Some looks were shot my way and the kid wanted to retort but was interrupted by the scream of a girl. I frowned as I saw the cause. 'The wards should repel all magical creatures. What are ghosts doing here?'

The ghosts turned to us like they only noticed us now and the monk among them smiled happily. "Oh students! About to be sorted I believe?" "Yes," I answered as the rest of the kids either nodded or mumbled an answer. The ghosts turned to me and their eyes widened. "Sirius Black?" one of them whispered. I smiled, knowing what reputation this body's father has. "Hm, I believe my father is a bit taller than me." McGonagall chose this moment to enter again and usher us into the Great Hall.

The moment I stepped into it - I ignored the whispers of " His father was the traitor" and fearful looks - I ignored the curious looks of the children in the hall and concentrated on the headmaster, who was sitting, where Arthur sat - where I should sit. For a moment I wanted to draw my wand and start flinging the most painful curses at the man, who was ridiculing all I had done, who I had killed and what I had sacrificed, by sitting there with a happy smile as if it was only right that he was there, but I calmed myself and only glowered at him, which didn't do anything to help my new reputation among the first-years. My bloodthirsty thoughts were interrupted by a song. I raised an eyebrow as I saw who it was, that was singing and thought about the charms, that one would need for recreating such an artifact.

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,

But don't judge on what you see,

I'll eat myself if you can find

A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,

Your top hats sleek and tall,

For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat

And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head

The Sorting Hat can't see,

So try me on and I will tell you

Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve, and chivalry

Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,

if you've a ready mind,

Where those of wit and learning,

Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin

You'll make your real friends,

Those cunning folks use any means

To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!

And don't get in a flap!

You're in safe hands (though I have none)

For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

I clapped with the rest of the school till McGonagall began calling us forward to be sorted.

"Abbot, Hannah"

A blonde girl with pigtails ran to the hat and was sorted into "HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Black, Mordred"

I stepped forward and put the hat on. I felt something push softly against my mind shields.

'I shall warn you that any unprovoked harm you do to students will be avenged. Now, where could you be but-' "SLYTHERIN!"
