My Swarm Academia: Call Of The Void

Chapter 35 - Basic School Stuff

Instantly the class perked up. Considering how yesterday had ended, it had been quite a while since things had been normal and school-like. Almost everyone instantly raised their hands to volunteer themselves for the position. Kai just watched, amused. Mineta declared his perverted manifesto, while everyone else just wanted to have the job.

Kai didn't understand it himself, but Japanese school kids put a lot of importance on this. Like, who was going to remember this after graduation? Maybe the other students would, but would any outsiders care? He'd never heard of anyone being class president. Which is to say that nobody he knew of bragged about it after graduation, and the news wouldn't care. Pros don't care. So why does anyone?

He just shook his head as Iida took control enough to get everyone to vote. Hearing Aizawa say that he didn't care how they picked it as long as they were done before the deadline, he knew that they were like-minded.

The vote was carried out on random scraps of paper. Without a moment of thought, Kai wrote down Yaoyorozu's name. With her analysis yesterday, she seemed smart and level-headed. She gave off a feeling of class, too. Not to mention she was the one with the most raw potential energy. Half a gigaton? Something like that. Some numbers needed to be crunched to be more specific…

Of course, who knew what Midoriya would be capable of as soon as he stopped self-destructing.

When all of the votes were tallied up, there were a couple of surprises. The first were Midoriya and Yaoyorozu at the top, each having gathered three votes. Considering everyone wanting the job, it was surprising that they were two votes ahead. But surprising especially to Kai was that he had a vote.

He didn't want the job, but it was touching that someone would trust him to it. It took a bit of work to keep up a poker face. He didn't want to bring any attention to that person.

Still, it was an intriguing question. Midoriya was the most likely candidate, as he alone hadn't directly seen Kai as a "demon lord." However, he had raised his hand for the title of class president. Maybe he voted for himself. Add in Iida and Uraraka, and his three are accounted for. All other single vote candidates could be ruled out, and probably Yaoyorozu. So who was it…

In the end, he couldn't really deduce much with certainty. There were several people it could have been, but little reason to believe it was them. Especially considering yesterday.

They would come forward themselves sooner or later. No use overthinking things. But poor Midoriya, he wanted the job, got it, and is now a nervous wreck.

And so the day continued. Normal classes all the way up to lunch. The teachers started giving Kai frequent glances, as if they suspected that he wasn't done tearing into them. However, he was perfectly behaved.

Whatever was going on in his head (which due to the actions of changelings around town ranged from reading articles on the internet to playing chess against a few old men in a park) he was ready with an answer when called on and would even offer to help classmates with an explanation in math. Though they knew what happened yesterday, they had a hard time connecting it to the child in the second row.

Lunch arrived without incident. Upon arriving in the cafeteria, Kai was apprehended by Ayako. She grabbed him by the hand and excused them from Class 1-A and went directly to the lunch line, where a place was held by a couple of Ayako's friends. She introduced him to the girls.

Of course she would, Kai thought, internally shaking his head. One of the girls seemed interested. Apparently, Ayako hadn't said enough.

"Kai, I think that there's someone here you should meet," Ayako said, gesturing to a boy with indigo hair that stood behind them. He looked tired. "This is Shinso-kun. His Quirk is amazing, but he didn't have good compatibility with the entrance exam. I think he has a great chance to get into the hero class!"

"Really? Shinso, it's nice to meet you! What abilities do you have? I haven't heard anything, but I'm already impressed if Ayako wants to introduce you like this." Indeed, this was highly irregular. The friends' introduction was expected, as it was in her nature.

"Before I answer, may I ask why you decided to ask so awkwardly?" Shinso asked. Most people would want to know about Quirks, but Kai went a more roundabout way.

"Not everything is about Quirks. Mom always said, 'to be a hero, first comes will, then wisdom, and power last.' I'd rather hear that your Quirk is just common sense before hearing you can fly at the speed of sound, even though I have to admit that would be cool."

"Ayako did say that you were… different." Shinso wasn't quite sure how to react to Kai.

"I'm sure she did, and in almost that exact way!" Kai said with a grin. If she had to describe his personality, how could she not?

Shinso finally laughed, as Kai was absolutely right. In leaving class, she had mentioned a "brother" she was proud of, but when asked more, all she felt comfortable saying was that he was… different. Pause and all.

With that out of the way, Shinso was able to open up about his Brainwashing Quirk. Though he had mostly expected it with Kai's attitude, he was still pleasantly surprised that Kai acted as if it was perfectly normal. Even Ayako had shown some sympathy, realizing how growing up with a Quirk that most would consider inherently sinister would have been.

But, after the group had sat down at a table, he would have never expected that Kai would ask to experience it. Why would anyone want that?

"Because I just want to see what happens," Kai said when Shinso said as much. "I have a mental component to my Quirk, too, so I want to see what happens." It would be very useful knowledge to have in the future.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Shinso asked.

"Absolutely," Kai said. Suddenly, he felt his body go… weird. It was like it was tense and loose at the same time. Not like he was paralyzed, but at the same time, his body wasn't responding.

"Well, he did it. Hey, Shinso, make him slap himself," Ayako said with a smile. "He won't mind, he deserves it."

"Ha ha, Ayako. I don't think I really- oh." Kai realized that while his body wasn't responding he was still able to talk freely. "Is this how things always are?"

"No, no it's not," Shinso said, confused. He'd used his Quirk a lot, mostly to get out of rough situations that his Quirk had gotten him into. But people rarely even had a clear mind through the process, much less retained the ability to speak. With a bit of effort, he was able to make Kai raise his hand, but it was difficult to control.

"Huh. How about that? You know, this is really relaxing. It felt kinda weird at first, but now, I think I like the feeling. I'm sitting up straight, but it's the same as if I was lying down. But you know, I think you should let me go now so that I can eat."

Shinso released his Quirk and resumed conversation, asking Kai about his Quirk to know why he was different.

Just a normal school day, with normal school stuff.

Of course that was when an alarm sounded.
