RWBY: Fireborn

Chapter 27 - Post report and Enlightening

As Ozpin entered the Lab, he saw Glynda and Yang collapsed in chairs while Logan was checking on a white haired fox faunus girl, who appeared to be passed out, with a clipboard in his now clean hands. All three of them had blood covering random portions of their fronts. Glynda sat lady-like in the chair but, her eyes gave away the stress she went through as she was out of it. Yang was leaned forward with her elbows on her knees and eluded a aura of tiredness. Logan's pet, Roxy, was seen nearby the man, emitting a green glow from it's body. Logan was the only one who seemed to be unaffected by this. As Ozpin continued to look through the lab's interior, he could see a man with no arms laying face down while his back was covered in bandages. The smell of antiseptic was heavy in the air as well as other chemicals used in the surgery. Ozpin slowly walked over to Logan as he jotted down some notes on his clipboard. Logan knew it was he, and without turning around he spoke.

[Logan] "Hello, Professor. I'll be with you in a moment. I'm almost done with Annette here."

[Ozpin] "What caused the wounds and how bad were they?"

[Logan] "A hound type grim called a Cerberus. Annette here had the least worry-some injuries. Mostly small cuts and abrasions from being thrown through trees and brush. Daniel had the worst of it. The grim got a hold of his arms and thrashed him thoroughly. There were several shards throughout his body from the prosthetic arms I made him. I can say without a doubt, it's a miracle he survived."

[Ozpin] "That severe, huh? What did you have to do for him? From when you said 'miracle', it has to be no small feat."

Logan walked back to Daniel and checked his bandages once again. Ozpin followed him with his eyes never leaving his figure. Once he was satisfied, Logan looked directly at Ozpin for the first time since he entered the lab.

[Logan] "I'll spear the gory details. With the little metal I had to work with, I had to brace and reinforce his spinal column from the bottom of his shoulder blades to the base of his neck. Afterwards, I had to have Pyrrha and Professor Goodwitch remove the pieces of shrapnel that was from the arms. If any other surgeon tried to preform surgery, the chance he would have died would be 99%. I did my best, he will walk; however, he can't fight anymore. Daniel, no longer can work as a Hunter."

[Ozpin] "I see what you mean by 'miracle', you've done well. But I having a little trouble with little kids being Hunters."

[???] "Well sorry for being LITTLE! By the way, I'M 23!"

Annette had awoken towards the end of Ozpin's comment. She slowly got up from the table she was resting on. As she got off, you could see her arms and legs bandaged while her face was a pale. Her ears twitched to and fro as she stared at Daniel's bandaged body. She then looked at Logan with pleading eyes, they seemed to be asking if he will be fine.

[Logan] "He'll live. And I don't believe there was anyone else capable of operating on him but me. Although, he'll need to find another job, his days as a Hunter are over."

[Annette] "As long as he lives, I could care less."

Annette breathed a sigh of relief. She slowly limped over to Daniel's face and c.a.r.e.s.sed it before kissing his forehead. She then turned to Ozpin and did a little bow and introduced herself.

[Annette] "I'm sorry for my late introduction. I'm Annette Plum, and this is Daniel 'Hawk' Carolina, my husband. We are, as you guessed, Hunters that try to help as many people as we can. Logan here, helped us when I and Daniel were gravely wounded by grim. Without his help we would have died. Thank you for allowing him to treat us"

[Ozpin] "I'm the headmaster of Beacon, Ozpin. I had heard that Logan was preparing of an emergency. I see now, that I was right not to be worried, as Logan was able to handle it. The two over there are Professor Glynda Goodwitch, and student Ms Yang Xiao Long, both of who had helped with the surgery your husband needed. Any thanks should go to them"

Ozpin gestured to the corner where Glynda and Yang were slumped. Glynda merely nodded her head in response. Yang didn't even stir, she seemed to be oblivious to the world right now. As he was about to continue, Blake, Jaune, and Pyrrha returned with three separate bags. Logan took lead and had Annette lay back down to rest. Jaune gave the bag he was holding to Logan while Blake and Pyrrha went to Glynda and Yang. Waking them from their stupor to get changed, Logan and the guys left and went outside while the girls stayed. As Logan, Jaune, and Ozpin left the lab, Logan went to the side and quickly build a shack with his earth to get changed in. Logan entered and rapidly got changed, as he exited, he turned the shack in to a furnace. Throwing his clothes, shoes, and u.n.d.e.r.w.e.a.r included; in the bag in, he burned them to ashes. They waited for the girls to leave as well, when they did, Logan repeated the process. Burning their clothes, u.n.d.e.r.w.e.a.r, and shoes to ash. When question as to why, he simply responded to lessen the chance to have a blood-born disease to infect one of them. He then promised to pay them for their clothing cost. Glynda was thankful, where as Yang was annoyed that she lost her boots. To calm her down, Logan promised to mod her motorcycle for her. That at least calm her down enough to let it slide for now. Until Glynda faced-palmed herself.

[Glynda] "My scroll was in there. Thankfully, I backed-up all my lesson plans. I'm gonna need something for my class though."

Glynda, now wearing a loose-fitting white blouse, dark blue dress pants, and soft brown loafers; said as she realized what she did. Yang, wearing a yellow shirt, light brown cargo pants, and white sneakers; snickered at her teachers dismay. Logan, wearing a dark red shirt, blue jeans, and black boots; shook his head at her antics. Logan asked them to follow him into his workshop; as they entered, Logan began rummaging through a box labeled 'Scroll prototypes'. As he searched, Logan soon left the box with a bronze cylinder with emerald green diamonds on the ends and one in the middle, a black belt with a magnetic latch for a buckle, and glasses similar to his visor with a microphone bar. The cylinder was about 6in (15.24cm) long and about 2 1/2in (6.35cm) round; on the side had letters that read 'Scroll mk2 prototype'. Logan handed it to Glynda and explained what it was.

[Logan] "This is the Prototype Scroll mk2, it's a full working scroll that doubles as a PC, with some improvements. It has a integrated reader that speaks through the glasses. A full hologram projector for doc.u.ments, and a solid, moveable hologram for any physical projects. The glasses also double as a quick and easy way to answer phone calls. The belt allows it to be kept open for easy access when needed, the fabric can also keep an extra charge when needed. Just attach each side of the buckle to the ends of the scroll."

[Glynda] "This is quite the gift you have given me. Wouldn't this be more useful to you, then me? All your projects could easily be kept in here."

[Logan] "I stopped using it when I managed to fit it in a smaller frame. I already moved all my projects form it and cleared it. It will only open with a fingerprint of the owner. Hold your thumb on the green diamond in the middle for three seconds. Once you do, a tab will pop out for you pull out to work on. If you need any assistance, just call."

Logan gave Glynda a quick rundown of how to work the scroll. Once he was done, he discussed with Ozpin of moving Annette and Daniel to the nurse's office for better watch, as they couldn't sleep in the lab. As they left, Logan dismissed himself to his room to rest. Blake, Jaune, Pyrrha, and Yang followed suit and left as well for their respective rooms. Logan, even though he didn't show it, was tired. After leaving the shop, Jaune grabbed Logan's arm and forced Logan to lean on him. Yang followed suit and did the same with his other arm.

[Logan] "I'm fine. I can walk just fine."

[Jaune] "You may be fine, but let us help. You've been through a lot."

[Yang] "Besides, I know you, Logan. You may not show it, but I can tell your tired. Lean on us for a bit."

[Jaune] "Yeah, you've been doing surgery for the last hour. And you saved someone's life. You eared some rest."

Logan was about to say something, but Auren interrupted him. Auren could sense Logan's mental state, and Logan was trying to force himself to continue on even after the surgery. The mental strain was great as Logan was concentrated so thoroughly, that any outside disturbances were blocked out.

{Auren} "Let them, they care about you dearly. It's fine for you to rest, the boy named Daniel with be alright. From what I could see, his life is not endangered. You did well, rest."

Logan soon started nodding off. He felt as if his eyelids were getting heavier and heavier. By the time the trio got to Logan's room, he had already past out. Logan's room was a standard room any team was given. Except, Logan only had one bed, one desk and one wardrobe all off towards the bathroom on one side. The other side had armor stands, weapon racks, and parts of weapons and armor on a bench in a corner. As Jaune and Yang dragged and lifted him on to his bed, Jaune noticed an open notebook on Logan's desk. Walking over and picking it up, he begins to read aloud.

[Jaune] " 'A man cannot be a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall' -Aristotle. 'I never lose, I ether win or I learn' -Unknown. 'Don't be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try' -Unknown; 'When my day comes to die, I will not beg for more time, nor will I cry. I will have lead a life full of love and glory. My hope is that I leave this world with a smile on my face, and the courage to sing my own death song.' -Unknown Viking. 'The higher your placed, the more humbly you should walk.' -Ciecero. What is all this? It's just pages and pages of old sayings."

[Yang] "Oh, that? It's a collection of philosophies from famous figures. Logan has an understanding that with great power, comes great responsibility, and that the more praise he gets, the more humble he should be. He just knows that he's different."

[Jaune] "What do you mean?"

[Yang] "You know that he's not related to me of Ruby, right?"

[Jaune] "Yeah. His parents are friends of your father. They went on a perilous and harsh mission. Due to the mission, they've been away for years."

[Yang] "They basically instilled in him a sense of worldly understanding. He ultimately grew up in a very short time. They did cherish Logan, and he loves them dearly. However, he had a hard time making friends. He didn't really had any friends before he started living with us, but he got better over time. And ever since we've met him, he always seemed to be wise beyond his years. As if he's already lived a life time."

Jaune went silent, he understood what Yang had said better then she realized. Jaune thought back to the time he spent with his grandfather. When he met Logan, he felt as if he was meeting and old man in a profession where the young die quick. 'Wise beyond years' only summed up a small part of who really Logan was.

[Jaune] " To be honest, when we first met, I remembered a saying my grandfather used to say. He said 'I rather be a solider then a knight in shining armor. Because any knight whose armor is shiny and new, never had it's metal truly tested. For single crack does not mean it was broken, it means that it was put to the test and didn't break. And if you meet a solider or anyone who is damaged, know they can survive'. I can see why he acts the way he does, now more then ever."

[Yang] "He has a similar saying. But I don't care how he acts. He's family to me and Ruby. I will fight by his side when he needs it and he will never walk alone while he has family still kicking."

After speaking, Yang walked out of the room. Jaune followed behind after leaving a note in Logan's notebook. As he left, he remembered Ozpin's words about Logan; 'a genius only found every million years'. Jaune thought that it was more like a young kid with a soul of an elder who has live a long and arduous life. As Jaune left and entered his room with his team. As he enter, he saw Pyrrha laying on her bed with a tired look; Nora was with Ren on his bed, still hugging his arm. Jaune smiled and went to his desk and began writing a letter.

In the letter, he wrote about Logan. His personality, his hobbies, his friends, and his life in general. As he was writing, his team noticed and came over and read over his shoulder. Jaune soon concluded his letter, he folded it up and put it in an envelope. Once he was done, he called his mother, asking to pass on a letter for his grandmother if he sent it to her. After hanging up, his team asked what was the letter for.

[Jaune] "The letter's for my grandmother. Every year she goes to my grandfather's grave to talk to him, I know she'll say something about Logan to him. I have the feeling that if he were alive, both him and Logan would be fast friends. Plus, it's my way of showing her I'm doing fine."

Hearing his reasoning, Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren were surprised and happy at Jaune's care for his family. They began talking about random things to pass the time. As for all of them, even though it was only the afternoon, they had a long day.
