The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 28 - New Knowledge

"I accept."

The assassin kneeled and lowered her head. Rhaxtyx was not expecting her to accept it this quickly.

"What made your mind up this quickly?"

"I failed my masters. I was going to be punished upon returning. I had a chance to avoid that."

"Punishment? Like what, whipping?"

"There are worse punishments than physical pain. Also that kind of thing would impair our combat prowess. That's why they use mental punishments."

"I see. Yeah I can see that."

"Usually they would punish me already but…"

"Oh that. With the link broken that spell was lifted as well."

"I felt that."

"So… What's your name?"

"They called me No. 99."

"You don't have a name?"

"Names are just dead weight. They don't mean anything so we don't use them."

"Well I'm not calling you No. 99. So… A name… I'm not that great with this. So how about Jule?"

"No."

"Kate."

"Mm-mhm."

"Hmm, Hale?"

"No thanks, I don't like the nuance of it."

"Okay how about…"

This went on for about half an hour. Every suggestion made by Rhaxtyx was rejected by her and his options were about to end. After trying all the names he knew, he was about to quit. But then he had another idea and asked her.

"How about Miriam? It sounds good right? RIGHT?"

He was desperate. He was out of options and he wanted to eat. He missed eating in just one day.

"I think… I like it. Yes. I like it." (Miriam)

"FINALLY!"

Rhaxtyx jumped around out of joy when he heard she liked it. Even Badgey was kind of scared when it saw Rhaxtyx behaving this way. But soon it disregarded him. It looked at Miriam and began walking towards it. Her gaze was on Rhaxtyx this whole time and as she did not feel blood thirst, she did not realize Badgey approaching her. When it touched her leg and began rubbing itself like a cat and looked at her with the cutest eyes it could do.

When she felt something fluffy touching her feet, Miriam trembled and her whole body was covered in goosebumps. When she looked down, she saw Badgey looking at her.

"KYAAA!"

*Zbam!*

She instinctively kicked and jumped backwards. Badgey was not hurt but it was shocked. As well as Rhaxtyx. He never saw Badgey getting kicked. He smiled broadly and looked at Badgey. It looked back when it felt the gaze on it and was visibly irritated.

"I-I'm sorry. *Ahem* I didn't mean to-" (Miriam)

"It's fine. This little bastard deserves it. But what happened there?"

"I was never good with animals."

"But you have confronted them before?"

"As prey and foe, yes."

"Hehehe. Did you hear that bastard? She doesn't like you. Hahah!"

*Hiss. Poof! Swish.*

"OW!"

After this provocation, Badgey hissed and jumped at Rhaxtyx to claw at him. He was still laughing when this happened and he realized it a bit too late and he could not completely dodge this strike. Badgey was able to claw Rhaxtyx's left calf a bit.

"You little bastard!"

*Snicker*

"Anyway. Are you hungry? Cause I wanna eat! Oh and a little thing."

Rhaxtyx lifted his Disguise of Rax and donned his Rex Disguise.

"I'm constantly using 'Disguise' just to be on the safe side. You don't have to worry though. I don't have a world ending secret or anything like that."

He chuckled and waved his arm.

"Let's go! I don't want to miss lunch time."

They descended the stairs and entered the dining area. Some people were curious about the red-haired girl with the average looking guy. The inn keeper was curious as well. He walked to their table personally and asked.

"G'morning laddie. Whas this? When did ya sneak a gal in eh?"

"Non o' yer bussness! We just want to eat old man."

"Faine faine! The usual? Wha about the ladie?"

"The same as me. I mean, is there any other choice?"

"Nope! Haha! Two breakfast comin righup!"

After the inn keeper left Miriam looked at Rhaxtyx but did not say anything. Rhaxtyx didn't seem to notice it as he was busy looking around. He was thinking something deeply. He turned to Miriam and smiled.

"Today we will go on a request by the guild. With that we can have you as an adventurer too which would help us in the long run."

"How?"

"I know the guild master here, I'm sure he can do something."

Their meal came soon and they ate peacefully. Badgey was happy with its meat pieces as well. It could not compare to the last nights snack but it still thought that it was delicious. After they finished they left for the guild. On the way they made a small detour for Rhaxtyx to cast Disguise of Rax on himself.

They entered the guild, as it was nearing noon there wasn't many people so they were quick to reach front desk. There was a young man this time on the desk and when he saw Rhaxtyx approach, he donned a business smile and talked.

"Good morning. How may I help you?" (Receptionist)

"Yeah yeah. Tell the guild leader that I've come and I have some things to talk." (Rhaxtyx)

"Eh? I-I'm sorry but not everyone-"

"Look I've been in this situation before. Just show him this and tell him that I got some things to talk."

As he spoke, Rhaxtyx gave his nameplate to the young man and waited. Even after a while the receptionist was sitting still. Rhaxtyx became irritated when he saw this but when he was about to open his mouth to speak the back door opened and the guild master appeared from behind it. He raised his hand in an assuring manner and spoke with a gentle smile.

"It's okay Michael, he's a guest." (Guild Master)

"But- but sir…"

"I said it's okay didn't I? Let him through."

"Yes sir."

The receptionist opened the hatch of the front desk's personnel door and let Rhaxtyx and Miriam through. Rhaxtyx took his nameplate back with a smile and Miriam did not even give glance to the boy. They walked with the guild leader leading the way to his office.

When the door opened, a sweet smell entered their noses.

"Sorry about that. I was in the middle of having lunch. I can tell the people to cook for you too if you want." (Guild Master)

"What do you say Miriam?"

"Mmm."

When asked, Miriam nodded with an excited expression. Rhaxtyx gave a wry smile at that. Guild master ordered two more servings and sat down on his chair. Rhaxtyx and Miriam sat down following after.

"So I'm guessing you have matters to discuss Mr. Rax?"

"Kind of yeah. Just wanted to register her as an adventurer."

"You could've done that at the front desk."

"Yeah but then you wouldn't know that she is with me dummy."

When Rhaxtyx looked, Miriam was stuffing herself with food slowly. Her cheeks were full and she was still putting food into her mouth regardless. She noticed Rhaxtyx and guild master was looking at her so she swallowed he food and drank water to wash it down. After a small cough, she acted as if nothing happened. Her eyes were closed and her head faced forward.

"That was all then?" (Guild Master)

"I guess so. There's also a mission too but that is not here."

"Yes."

"But! Free food is good as well. Now, thanks for the meal Mr. Guild Master!"

They had their lunch with guild master. Miriam just sat there eating silently while Badgey lying near the door. Rhaxtyx was asking about various things to the guild master and he tried his best to answer all of them. They were mostly trivial stuff, about chants and spells. Rhaxtyx even asked how he could learn more spells. Apparently one has to have spell books to learn the formula correctly. One can't just learn from someone perfectly.

Spell books work differently from teaching. One writes the spells components and chants to a piece of paper and then casts the spell to the said paper. This is how you create a scroll of learning. Then you add this paper to a book and you get a spell book. A spell book can contain various spells, even the ones the wizards don't have the affinity to. But in that case the wizard can't cast those spells but can use them to teach to their student. A spell books main purpose is to store spells. You can use it to teach.

"Different from spell books and scrolls of learning, there are spell scrolls. You can use them to cast spells even if you don't have the affinity. But these scrolls are one time use only and made by different means. You have to have the affinity to create a spell, for example; fire. To create a Fireball spell scroll, you have to have Fire affinity and you have to know how to cast Fireball. You draw a sigil that can contain the fire element and cast the spell to that sigil. The sigil contains the spell until used. To use a spell scroll you just have to unfurl it, point the sigil to your target and channel your mana into it." (Guild Master)

"Really? Is that all? That's easy. So I just have to obtain a spell book huh?"

"It is easier said than done. A spell book is very precious. They contain the studies and experiences a wizard acc.u.mulates throughout their life. No one will easily show it, forget giving it away. Most wizards don't even show it to their students."

"Maan. I had high hopes. So I just have to kill him or something?"

"Killing a king is easier than killing a wizard. They say 'A wizard prepares'. A wizard's home is the most impenetrable fortress you can see. And it is one of the most dangerous places one can ever be in. There are various magical traps and puzzles a wizard creates just for unwanted guests."

"All the more fun! Anyway we have to go now. We have stuff to do. Thanks for having us."

"Please. Don't come too soon."

"And don't forget about Miriam's registration."

"Do not worry."

They left the office and arrived at the front desk. They left to look for a mission while Rhaxtyx explained the reason.

"So the main reason for this is I want to see your skills. I already know your combat abilities to an extent but I don't know if you can cast any spells or anything. So to see them I would like to have a little combat practice with you. Well to be exact I want you to fight while I observe." (Rhaxtyx)

"Very well."
