The Chronicles Of Rhaxtyx

Chapter 30 - Final Preparations

*Rustle rustle*

Rhaxtyx was dumbfounded when he heard the rustling. It was right after he made fun with the name of a godlike being and now this was happening. He stood up and faced the shrub. Miriam was on the edge as well. She never expected something like this would occur. This fast even! She drew her short sword and took position in front of Rhaxtyx.

"Wha-wha-what the… What the hell is going on!? Is that guy really here to smite me!?" (Rhaxtyx)

"I don't know! For now let's step back and see what it is." (Miriam)

They slowly walked backwards, never taking their eyes off of the shrub. Rhaxtyx even began to chant a spell. At that moment, Rhaxtyx thought of something.

"Hey, where's that little bastard?"

Miriam stopped and looked at Rhaxtyx. He walked towards the shrub and looked inside it. There, Badgey was clawing around the branches, looking for nuts to eat. When Rhaxtyx saw this, something snapped and he took Badgey from its scruff while gnashing his teeth.

"You scared the sh*t out of me you little bastard! Apologize right now!" (Rhaxtyx)

Badgey tilted its head and looked at Rhaxtyx innocently. Rhaxtyx became angrier after this and threw Badgey to the opposite side. Badgey landed and after taking a couple of steps to stabilize, looked at Rhaxtyx with angry eyes.

"Oh? You're angry? At least I didn't make you almost sh*t your pants!"

*Grr*

Badgey jumped at Rhaxtyx and they started to brawl. There were biting and clawing, and most of it was by Rhaxtyx. After a moment, because of their fight, a cloud of dust surrounded them and Miriam watched them with an expressionless face. She took out a jerky out of her bag and began chewing at it while watching. When Badgey got the smell of meat, it stopped and looked at Miriam. Its eyes started to shine when it saw the jerky and started to run towards it.

When Miriam saw this, her eyes opened wide and she started to back off. Badgey jumped to her and did a flip to adjust its landing, aiming straight at the jerky in her hand. Surprised by this, Miriam reflexively kicked at Badgey.

*Bmpf!*

"Awooo!" (Badgey)

*Thud*

Badgey flew across the tree line and after a couple of seconds passed, a distant thud was heard. Rhaxtyx was smiling from ear to ear and turned to Miriam with thumbs up.

"Haha! That's what you get! Nice kick Miriam! You're strong." (Rhaxtyx)

His smile broke when he saw Miriam's face. She was shaking and her eyes welled up. She was locked in her place and kept looking to the empty air.

"Umm… Miriam? You okay?"

"Ahem."

She cleared her throat and sat to the tree log behind her. She tried to keep her complexion better was she still occasionally shook. She was chewing on the jerky in her hand furiously. But because she ate fast, a small piece got stuck in her throat and she started to cough wildly.

Rhaxtyx took his water skin and run to her side, handed it and spoke with a broken smile.

"You okay Miriam?"

"I-I just k-k-k-kicked it."

"Yes and it was an awesome one. So why are you giving this strong of a reaction?"

"I kicked it reflexively; I didn't mean to hurt it. Also, I'm not good with animals."

"Aah. I see."

Rhaxtyx comforted Miriam until she stopped shaking. Meanwhile Badgey came unscathed and sat in front of Miriam, giving her a cute look. Miriam could not look it in the eyes.

"See? That bastard is fine! Anyway, now that we have discussed what we intended, let's take a walk and fight some magical beasts." (Rhaxtyx)

"Reason? I already told you about what I can do."

"Well yes but I want to increase our teamwork if need arises. So we need a situation that we fight together. Don't you think so too?"

"I understand."

Miriam stood up and looked at Rhaxtyx resolutely. Badgey was still looking at her with those eyes so she tried hard to not make eye contact. Rhaxtyx smile wryly and started walking. They searched for prey and hunted until it was evening. Their combination was really good and they got used to each other quite quickly. After every hunt, Miriam would extract the monster cores if there was any and the valuable parts of the magical beast while Rhaxtyx kept watch for Badgey.

"This looks enough, don't you think?" (Rhaxtyx)

"Mhm." (Miriam)

Asked Rhaxtyx while wiping his sweat from his forehead. A cold wind blew, telling them the night was coming.

"Let's return. I still have a place to be by this evening."

"Mhm."

Rhaxtyx then made his way towards the city while carrying the loot they collected. Miriam insisted she helped him but he refused, saying this was nothing to a god. Even though Miriam was still skeptical of this remark, by the time they reached the city gates she started to believe just a tiny bit. Because Rhaxtyx was carrying almost eighty kilograms with ease.

The gate guards were shocked when they saw this sight and they hurriedly opened the gate. He donned his usual Disguise along the way so the guards knew who he was. The sergeant was there also. He smiled and came near Rhaxtyx.

"Thank you for your service to our city, Mr. Rex."

"You're welcome. I want a reward for this, y'know."

"May I know the specifics of this bag?"

"Magical beast parts."

"Oh! Then our city will certainly reward you for your service. Please-"

"You know where I stay so send them to my place later."

Rhaxtyx did not wait for sergeant to finish and kept walking while carrying the bag behind him. Sergeant was stunned by this and when he recomposed himself Rhaxtyx was already a long way ahead. He sighed and returned to his post.

Rhaxtyx made his way towards Roman's shop. His preparations were almost complete and he was planning on leaving tomorrow. He wanted to ask Roman to follow him again. He changed his Disguise along the way to Rax and reached the shop. The door was open but Roman was nowhere to be seen.

"Hello~. Roman? I'm here~" (Rhaxtyx)

"I'm coming I'm coming. Just wait a little."

Roman's voice came from the back room where the forge was located. He came out wiping his hands to a cloth and his upper body was n.a.k.e.d as always. His hair was sticking to his forehead because of the sweat. When he saw Rhaxtyx he smiled.

"Oh, welcome!" (Roman)

"Have you thought about what I said to you?" (Rhaxtyx)

"I did. That was what I was doing actually, packing my stuff. This young lady is?"

"She's with me Roman."

"Oh I'm sorry then. I didn't realize. I'm Roman. May I know your name?"

"Miriam."

"Nice to meet you madam."

"Stop flirting with her. I don't want that kind of thing in this group if possible."

"I'm not flirting."

"So? What do you have? We might help you with that."

"Oh just some materials and tools, nothing fancy. They are at the forge. Well it used to be a forge."

"I told you I'm sorry."

"Haha I don't mind. I told you I'm coming with you so it's fine."

Roman talked with a wry smile. He was smiling ear to ear, seemingly excited for this journey that is ahead of him. He led them to the back room, where he got all his stuff. What he showed were crates full of materials and tools. There were also various weapons and armor as well.

"Roman…"

"Yes?"

"What the hell is this?!"

"Don't expect me to sell everything this store has to offer just in two days!"

"Don't you a member of the blacksmith's guild or something!? Isn't there something like that?!"

"Do you think they would open a branch in a place as remote as this!? Only the Adventurers' Guild does that! I have a cart as well so don't worry."

"Even so this is too much man."

Rhaxtyx was genuinely shocked by the amount of materials and wares Roman had. It seemed like the shop was not doing any business but if he pointed that out he might really break Roman so he stopped himself. Miriam's eyes were wide as well. She was looking through the crates and was making herself more surprised by the second.

"If you have anything you want you can take it without reservation. It's not like they would be bought anyway." (Roman)

"It seems like you make bad equipment." (Rhaxtyx)

"You want to say that to my face?!"

"I… already did?"

"Do you want a forger with you?!"

"Are you threatening me?!"

"You are loud." (Miriam)

"Ah, sorry miss."

"Sorry Miriam."

"Well when are we leaving then?" (Roman)

"I was thinking tomorrow morning."

"Okay I'll finish packing and loading by then. Let's meet at the gates."

"Sure thing."

"By the way where are we headed?"

"I didn't really think about it."

"Do you have a place in mind."

"I'm not really around here. For now how about selling these. Do you have an idea?"

"We can always trade them for some pocket money in any store. For that Vulca would be the best choice as it is a border city and it is also a military oriented city like Leilo."

"Then it's decided. We're going to Vulca!"

"Mhm."

"Okay! Be at the west gate in the morning."

"Meet you there!"
