The Lost Chronicles Of Pangea: Apocalypse

Chapter 58 - The Secret Of The Dragon (VI): Loosing Minerva

As David entered the tunnel he could not help the shiver that flowed from the top of his head to the base of his spine. There was an aura that could not be explained, an eerie chill dancing over the surface of his skin. This place was spooky, and the fact that Vidi was shivering like he had been thrown in a lake one winter morning shows that David was not the only one feeling weird.

The walls of this tunnel was a whole lot more different than the previous, It had murals just like the platform in the first tunnel, it was telling a story just like the first, however this one was a whole lot more complicated and different than the first. The dragons were not four like the first, they were seven.

But David could not understand the story being told, the paintings were all over the place and in no definite sequence for it to be understood. It was as if someone took a perfect picture and broke it into numerous pieces, turning it into a puzzle that no one could make heads or tails of, no matter how hard they tried. David shook his shoulder in resignation as he made his way through the tunnel, if he survives the coming fight, then there was no need to worry about anything, there would be enough time for him to go study those pictures in detail.

The tunnel came to an end in a cavern that was not as big as the previous ones. It was the size of an average class room, and right in the middle was a mass of shadows and black smoke. The wraith looked like a person made completely of shadows as he or she floated two meters above the ground. Its eyes was white, and seemed to be glowing.

The wraith moved around the room in an absent minded way, it went from one end of the room to another, and when it got to one end arcane symbols etched on the walls would light up, and the body of the wraith would distort, and be pushed back for it to continue its repetitive journey of going from one end of the room to the other.

"Do you think it knows we're here?" Minerva asked with a whisper.

"I don't know" David whispered back as he watched the wraith.

All of a sudden the wraith stopped at the center of the room, and slowly turns it's black shadow head towards their direction, then it opened its mouth, as gleaming white fangs and a black tongue stretched out. The wraith suddenly disappeared and appeared in front of David, scaring the heck out of him as he jumped back with a yell and pulled the trigger of his assault rifle hysterically.

"What's wrong with you!" He heard Lilith shout in anger as she pulled the gun out of his hand, completely ignoring the bullets bouncing of her skin.

"The wraith moved, it was right there, didn't you see....…it."

Contrary to what he had seen, David could see that the wraith was still moving from one end of the room to another. What ever he had seen, had just been a hallucination, a rather vivid one none the less, but it was all just in his head. David looked up at Lilith with an embarrassed look on his face, as he tried to say something.

"You don't have to apologize, we're going up against a wraith, it's definitely going to play games with our mind." Lilith spoke with a calm tone.

"That doesn't sound reassuring at all." David muttered as he got back up to his feet.

"Remember we're here because of your hair brained theory." Minerva whipped as she looked at the wraith.

But David stopped cold the moment he was completely back on his feet. He could feel coldness grip his heart as sudden terror seemed to fall on him. Lilith noticed his rather strange state, and decided to ask.

"David what's going on, your dragon eye is glowing."

"Tell me you can see that, tell me I'm not going crazy!"

"See what?" Minerva shouted equal parts angry and scared.

Whatever it was David was seeing, she had to be serious about it. The true scope of his abilities are not really known as the kid was like a freaking encyclopedia of powers that people would kill to have. She had no idea what he was capable of, which was why if he said he had an itch, Minerva would take it seriously, even though he made stupid plans. David looked up at Minerva and swallowed.

"Minerva...…its right behind you."

From his previous outburst, it was obvious the wraith had already started playing with their minds, in fact it could be that the wraith was never moving from one end of the cavern to the other, but has instead being with them from the moment they entered the tunnel. At this point it was hard to say what was real and what was not.

Minerva turned to move away, but it was already to late. The wraith appeared before her and grabbed a hold of her shoulders, then it opened its jaws to inhuman proportions, showing its gleaming teeth and black tongue as it wiggled from left to right like the body of a snake. Then it took a deep breath.

Minerva had never been someone who believed in fate. After all she was a doctor, and leaned more into the scientific study of life. Things like destiny and fate was total crap if you ask her, which was why she always had a falling out with her mother. They never could see eye to eye, and her mom being a necromancer was just a part of the problem between the both of them.

She could only ever relate to her father who tried as much as possible to be there for her, which was why she wanted to be so much like him. It was why she chose the same career path, dressed the same, and learnt to like what he did. She had turned up the level of the word daddy's girl to 22. In the end she did not how to live for herself, it broke her.

And so she decided to take a break, and that was how she made her first true friend and even became a godmother. She found purpose when little Astaroth was born and she held him first. That baby had given her a chance to finally want something for herself. A life of her own, a future to be had and shaped by her own decisions and lifestyle rather than by being a carbon copy of her father and wishing that her mother could put being a mother first, and a world ending, death loving necromancer second.

For a few years it worked out well for her, she got a promotion, her own place, and finally lost her v.i.r.g.i.n.i.t.y. Everything seemed to be looking good and she was putting plans Into place to smuggle Lilith into the city of iron so that her son could grow up in a better environment. At least that was the plan, until the apocalypse happened. Then she had to report for duty with her father, ended up getting captured, and watched helpless as her father was killed by a companion of her best friend. Her only friend, but still it hurt.

From then on it was one trouble after another, So far they've all managed to keep their head above the water and Minerva has been able to connect with other people too. Granted three of them are giant tortoises, but she liked to think that they had carved out a family for themselves here, and the bond between them just kept growing stronger with each day that passed.

But now she felt cold, she felt horror. She felt fear. All of her anguish and pain bubbled up to the front of her mind as her own demons tortured and took her apart, one piece at a time. She could vaguely hear David scream out her name as her body shook within the grasp of the wraith. Then there was an animalistic snarl as a wave of energy washed over her that left her weak. There was a sharp shriek of pain coming from whatever it is that was holding her up as it let go and she fell into his arms.

The boy had potential, but that thought was snuffed out almost as soon as it came to her mind. Her demons l came out of the darkness still biting and clawing, and grabbed hold of her, not caring for her screams and pleas, as they dragged her down into the darkness, relieving her greatest fear, again, and again, and again. For all eternity.

As soon as Veni's cloud of Ionite energy slammed into the wraith, it released a God awful screech, it's body began to develop cracks as light and pale fog began to seep out of it. It shuddered and let go of Minerva who fell like a rag doll. Lilith was in shock, it was like she was frozen in place, replaying the scene of when the wraith appeared, and started s.u.c.k.i.n.g out, what could only be considered Minerva's soul.

David caught her as she fell, her eyes were unfocused and were rapidly turning gray, like those of a blind person. Through his telekinesis, he could feel her mind. It was a jumbled mess of memories and random thoughts, and then there was nothing, only darkness. It was as if she was locked behind a door he couldn't get into, and that door was locked in a vault, and that vault was locked in a bas.e.m.e.nt three hundred feet under the ground. And that bas.e.m.e.nt was in a heavily fortified building, and that building was surrounded by a hundred meter concrete fence. And that fence was on the top of 4000 foot tall mountain, that's surrounded by a force field, right in the. Middle of an island, stuck at that center of an endless ocean.

He couldn't reach her no matter what he tried. She was gone. Her body was still breathing, but whatever it was that made Minerva who she was, was no longer there.

David looked up at Lilith, he sighed in guilt and anguish as he shook his head to tell her Minerva was gone. David did not trust himself enough to say anything, this was a massive blow to him. Because he knew without a doubt, he just got someone hurt, and there was nothing he could do about this.
