Chapter 38: Roald’s Power

Gods were almighty, eternal, and undefeatable.

In front of gods, human beings were ants. Extraordinaries were just slightly bigger ants.

Gods cared nothing for human beings in the same way that humans paid no attention to ants.

The reality really frightened Thulhu.

If there was nothing that humans could do, how much despair would the world feel?

“As human beings, we can only count on ourselves!”

Roald said this out loud, his expression animated. “This is how the career path came into being. This is a belief shared by generations of extraordinaries!”

“They’re powerful because they have powerful hearts, right?” asked Thulhu.

Roald was gratified by Thulhu’s words. That was exactly what he had been trying to convey to Thulhu from the very beginning.

“The gods are still too far away from us…”

Roald switched to a new topic. “But even a minor projection of them can change the entire world!

“Evil gods, as well as the demon, celebrate and take pleasure in death and chaos!

“Those evil things make a connection with greedy and shameless humans. Once that bridge is established, those human beings obtain ‘gifts’!

“Many of them are thus corrupted and become monsters and evil spirits. But there are also smart humans; by observing and studying those evil creatures, they create their own dark career paths and occupation systems! The authorities won’t allow these people to exist.”

[The Corrupted] was one example: it was a career path that drew ever closer to the demon.

Roald continued, “Most subordinates of the demon are much faster and stronger than ordinary humans, and some of them even carry the unholy aura of the abyss. The powerful ones can contaminate their surroundings, while the cunning ones are good at hiding themselves. They once brought great chaos to the world of human beings!”

“But the problem was still dealt with in the end, right?” asked Thulhu calmly.

“That’s right. They were all killed by demon hunters, who could sense their existence because of the demonic power in their bodies.” Roald nodded. “In fact… ordinary subordinates aren’t very difficult to deal with, since we now have guns. Fighting against evil spirits, on the other hand, is really tough. They’re spirits, so physical attacks don’t work.”

“Besides ordinary subordinates and evil spirits, there are too many others to describe… Like an old mansion that regularly disappears and reappears, a path leading to an unknown space, a time trap… We don’t know where they are and when they appear, but innocent people die because of them!”

“What a dangerous world…” Thulhu was shocked. “I… I’ve never heard of any of this…”

“The frequency of these cases happening drop to the lowest point at Dusk. Also…” Roald cast a glance at Thulhu. “Think about it: Where did you grow up? Where did you study?”

Thulhu was born into an extraordinary family which had produced demon hunters for generations. Thus, ordinary subordinates stayed far away from the family at Dusk.

Thulhu then went to St George’s University which was supported by the Goddess of Light Church – of course he would be safe.

Thulhu felt slightly embarrassed. He grinned and said, “Go on…”

Listening to Roald would for sure help Thulhu upgrade his [Demon Hunting LV1].

Therefore, Thulhu wasn’t going to waste a single second.

Finished with the introduction, they quickly grabbed a bite for lunch. In the afternoon, Roald took off his shirt and revealed to Thulhu the many ugly and horrifying scars on his bronze-coloured body,

“Now, no more talking – let’s fight! This is also part of the training!” said Roald.

“No problem!”

Thulhu took a deep breath and walked to the center. “How… how did you get these?”

“Scars are proof that you’re a man!”

Roald pointed at a scar. “This was left by a ‘horned devil,’ and it really was a hard horn. But now, its head is in my collection. Hm… this was left by a ‘mind manipulator.’ It took the form of a woman and tried to kill me!”

“What about this one?”

Thulhu pointed to a twisted scar on Roald’s belly, which looked like a kid’s careless scrawl.

“…That was left by the appendectomy I had when I was a kid. I filed a complaint already!”

“I see…”

Thulhu almost laughed, but he knew he had better remain serious right now.

It was now time for him to see how powerful a rank two [Demon Hunter] was!

“Watch out!”

Roald gave Thulhu a warning!

The next moment, Roald was already in front of Thulhu!

He was as fast as a black bear!

Roald’s speed was just unbelievable!

Thulhu was completely unprepared!

He clenched his teeth tight.

Besides Roald’s speed, his overbearing manner even made it hard for Thulhu to breathe!

“Turtle Style!”

Under the great pressure, Thulhu instinctively chose to defend himself.

Bang!

Thulhu’s arms were forced to bear the brunt of an extremely fierce and powerful thrust.

Thulhu felt like a steam train had rammed straight into him at full speed. He instantly flew back at the great momentum.

“My arm!”

Thulhu grabbed his right arm, moaning in pain. He felt that Roald had fractured it.

“That was a full-on attack. I wanted to test you…” said Roald as he walked toward Thulhu. “Nice fighting stance, but you haven’t yet reached the level of an extraordinary!”

“Are all specialists this powerful?”

Thulhu’s face was twisted with agony. He took the cream which Roald handed to him and rubbed his elbow with it.

The cream worked very well, although it smelled disgusting. The cool feeling spread further through his muscles and the pain was significantly reduced.

“Now you know what being an ‘extraordinary’ is! An extraordinary surpasses the limits of mankind!”

Roald said, “When you reach rank one, your power will be greatly increased. The higher your rank, the bigger the improvement!”

“You’re saying that the difference between rank one and rank two is much greater than that between an ordinary person and a rank one, right?”

Thulhu asked thoughtfully, “Then what if I take on multiple occupations?”

“You get the most improvement when you get your second occupation. After that, it’s cut by half when you take on a third, and by half again with a fourth occupation. Basically, that means no improvement at all.”

Roald answered, “The more occupations you have, the more rules you have to obey, and the powers can offset each other.”

“I see…”

Thulhu nodded seriously, and knew that his plan to pick up multiple occupations wasn’t going to happen.
