Chapter 39: Spirit Medium

Roald’s training was harsh. It was now already the beginning of August.

The new semester started at St George’s University. As a graduate, Thulhu could no longer stay in his dorm.

In the fight club.

“Congratulations!”

Donald gave Thulhu a big hug and said, “This is your scholarship and… that reward.”

“Finally!”

Thulhu had been looking forward to this reward for more than half a month. He hurriedly walked over to the fat purse on the table.

There were twenty gold dragons in the purse. How pleasant it was just to even look at them!

To most people, this was a fortune!

However, Thulhu soon turned his attention to the transcript lying beside the purse.

“Is this Professor Alannys’s notes on Old Ram?!” Thulhu’s heart thumped.

Donald pushed the thick transcript closer to Thulhu. “Yes, but it’s not an exact copy. The church deleted the evil and dark parts from the notes, but it’s still valuable! I have a copy, too!”

“Of course it is!”

Thulhu picked up the notebook. Scanning the twisted characters that were like tiny snakes, Thulhu grinned. “Old Ram is known as the oldest language. Its origin can be traced back to the dark era before mankind came into being. I’m very interested in it.”

He had been training for more than half a month.

Although Roald didn’t know Old Ram, he had told Thulhu everything he knew.

“Then… good for you, buddy!”

Donald shook hands with Thulhu and asked, “Where are you headed after graduation?”

“I got an offer from a lab in Green Tree Fort! Maybe I’ll go there,” Thulhu answered carelessly.

That was his original plan, but now everything had changed.

“Green Tree Fort?”

Donald looked quite surprised. “Well… That’s very impressive. Congratulations, and good luck!”

That was a bit weird.

Thulhu felt something was wrong.

Donald treated Thulhu even more warmly after learning that Thulhu was going to work at Green Tree Fort.

Was it because Green Tree Fort was actually more important in the union than Thulhu knew?

He walked back to his dorm, the thick notebook in his arms.

Shawn wasn’t here. Maybe he was still looking for a job; given his personality, Thulhu believed that Shawn would always be able to find something.

Thulhu closed his bedroom door and opened the notebook at his table.

When he started reading it, a notification popped up:

[Skill Book – Old Ram, detected. Will you spend 50XP to learn it? Yes/No?]

Thulhu could learn Old Ram through hard study. However, it wouldn’t be easy at all.

To learn a language, especially speech, it was very important to start from childhood. This would determine if one could pronounce the words correctly and finally become proficient in the language.

Thulhu started learning ancient Heber when he was young, so he was good at it. Roald started later, and had a long way to go if he wanted to catch up.

Of course, diligence was also essential in learning a language. As long as a person was willing to work hard, mastering a language was just a matter of time.

However, Thulhu didn’t have much time left.

To learn Old Ram, he would have to spend at least half a year on it.

Therefore, he chose to cheat!

“Yes!”

Thulhu made his decision, and the attributes panel instantly responded:

[50XP consumed. Old Ram acquired. Current level: LV1!]

Holding his head in his hands, Thulhu was overwhelmed with a ton of information.

All of a sudden, the snake-like, twisted characters in the notebook started to make sense to Thulhu.

Although he wasn’t good at Old Ram yet, he could now read the notes.

He checked his attributes panel again:

Name: [Thulhu Botley]

Occupation: [none]

Class: [0]

Title: [none]

Strength: [1.6]; Agility: [1.3]; Constitution: [1.2]; Spirit: [1.6]

Skill: [Corpse Princess LV1]; [Maga Fighting LV5]

Passive: [Common Heber LV3]; [Basic Physics LV4]; [Demon Hunting LV3]; [Ancient Heber LV2]; [Old Ram LV1]

XP: [60]

——————————————

Thanks to the tough training, his constitution had increased by 0.1 and [Demon Hunting] by two levels!

Thulhu was exhilarated at his progress.

Although 0.1 didn’t seem like a large number, an ordinary man would have to train hard for a very long time in order to make such progress.

Roald was very conscientious during the training and really pushed Thulhu hard. Also, the magical cream and essential oil helped a lot.

Thulhu noticed that there was even a faint ‘+’ symbol behind [Old Ram LV1].

He realized that passive skills could also be upgraded once certain prerequisites were met. For example, the notebook could help Thulhu upgrade his Old Ram to level 2 or 3, but wouldn’t be able to help him surpass Professor Alannys’s level.

Thulhu had to spend his XP carefully. Currently, he was fine with level 1 Old Ram.

Taking a deep breath, he took out the parchment pieces that he had found in the sewers.

His gut told him that Katherine and the mysterious man who had died in the sewers were connected somehow!

It wasn’t easy to decipher the characters, but Thulhu finally did it.

“21st January – It’s been six months since I was secretly sent to Niah under orders. Blessed by darkness, Katherine and Alannys from the university have become our new followers. They’ll be helping us from inside in the university. I’m sure that they’ll be of great help in the future.

“February – [Shadower] suits Katherine perfectly, so she will become my apprentice. Alannys’s constitution clashes with the power of shadow magic, but I think [Spirit Medium] is a good fit for her! I have to recall the information in order to teach her…”

To Thulhu’s great surprise, the rest of the parchment provided information on the ritual for turning into a rank one [Spirit Medium]!

[Spirit Medium]…

Thulhu read on. He realized that this was a professional occupation for dealing with spirits. A rank one [Spirit Medium] could form a link with spirits and ghosts that weren’t visible to common people or even extraordinaries, as well as mediate communication between spirits of the dead and living humans by letting the spirits temporarily possess their own body.

In short, this occupation was especially designed for handling ghosts and spirits, not human beings. Plus, it only had two attack methods: One was a long-range attack spell which crushed the enemy’s spirit using the caster’s own greater spirit power; and the other was to condense the caster’s dense spirit into a sharp spike which could only target one enemy at a time.

Thulhu recalled what Alannys’s power had felt like in the woods.

However, becoming a spirit medium couldn’t improve one’s physical strength. No wonder Alannys had been the first to die in that melee!

Thulhu shook his head slightly and felt somewhat hesitant.
