Chapter 40: Thulhu’s Choice

Should he go with the occupation [Spirit Medium]?

Thulhu clutched the parchment piece in his hand.

Reading these parchment pieces didn’t give him any XP. Perhaps this was because of the material it was made from, and the fact that it didn’t contain any power.

After all, the other pages were from a secret group’s holy book, while these parchment pieces were just scraps from someone’s diary.

[Rank one occupation information: Spirit Medium, detected! Prerequisites: Spirit 1.5; Constitution 1.0! Requirements met! Will you spend 200XP to learn it?]

As Thulhu expected, he could choose this occupation right away!

Staring at the notification, Thulhu knew that he could use his XP to quickly upgrade his occupation and take on multiple occupations.

Of course, XP was hard to come by.

Roald had once deliberately lost a fight to Thulhu to stop Thulhu from begging him all the time.

But the panel wouldn’t recognize that win.

After all, Roald wasn’t hostile toward Thulhu at all.

However, deciding whether someone was hostile or not could be tricky. In the extraordinary world, there were all sorts of sinister abilities and powers; perhaps there were occupations that could control one’s mind. Hostility was undoubtedly one of the emotions that could be manipulated and produced. If Thulhu could do it, tons of XP might be waiting for him!

Thulhu became excited at the possibility that he could exploit an advantage with his attributes panel. However, he soon stopped that line of thinking and reminded himself of the horrible consequences that would follow.

Truth was, he knew that the most direct way to get lots of XP was to kill his enemy!

If Thulhu turned into a cruel butcher, he would earn a considerable amount of XP.

But while he had lived as a human being twice over, Thulhu had never killed anyone himself. While this world had completely smashed his understanding into pieces, Thulhu hadn’t gone crazy.

In addition, at least until now, this world was blessed with peace. A bloodthirsty butcher would be annihilated right away by the powerful and main factions.

Thulhu wondered if he should join the army or an exploration team.

This world was so big that human beings had only explored less than ten percent of it so far; plenty of lands and oceans were still waiting to be discovered.

In the dark regions and areas lived all kinds of sinister and extremely dangerous creatures and monsters.

Therefore, exploration teams suffered heavy casualties every year. Nevertheless, this could be a great way for Thulhu to gain XP.

However, Thulhu knew that he would probably die a useless death if he were to explore the fringes of the world. The ages of great geographical discovery in human history all took place during Twilight of the Gods. Since extraordinary power was now waking up, it would be an extremely dangerous job, and making any progress in it would be basically impossible.

Thulhu stopped himself from following that line of thought further. Whatever the case, he had to solve the most urgent problem first.

So he continued reading.

For an ordinary person to become a spirit medium, he or she had to take a lot of drugs first to enhance the “sensations” in order to come closer to the requirements.

This was very dangerous. Those who didn’t have enough determination could easily go insane under the influence of hallucinogens, or even die.

Once the sensations hit the requirement, a person had to hold a psychic ritual in a completely enclosed space without any light or sound, such as in a confinement room.

After establishing an ideal environment for a spirit, the person would have to invoke one.

The power would completely change the quality of the person’s spirit, and they would finally become a spirit medium.

Failure was very common at this stage. Those who failed would be possessed by evil spirits or become horrific monsters.

From the description, only half of them succeeded. Ordinary people had to bet their lives on it.

Thulhu sighed.

Becoming an extraordinary was never going to be easy.

That was another reason why [Soldier] and [Apprentice] were the two most popular occupations; as long as a person had the right aptitude and was resolute enough, they stood a sixty to ninety percent chance of becoming an extraordinary.

In comparison, there was only a forty percent chance of a person becoming a [Demon Contractor], which was even lower than for [Spirit Medium].

To become a spirit medium, Thulhu had two options.

One was to put 200XP on it and instantly become a rank one extraordinary. That would certainly work, and there shouldn’t be any risks involved.

The other option was to follow the instructions and do it step by step, which would take around three to six months if everything went smoothly.

Thulhu didn’t have that much time.

If Thulhu was an ordinary person like Donald, he would have been wild with joy at such an opportunity to become an extraordinary.

For most people, the chance to become an extraordinary was like a dream, so there was no way they would be picky.

Thulhu Botley was different. He came from an extraordinary family and had an elder brother who was a rank two demon hunter. Thus, he knew what he should avoid.

Thulhu decided to finish reading the parchment pieces first.

In the end, there were just some comments left.

“…Katherine and Alannys are like two angels. Pardon me, darkness, for using the word, but that is the best description that I can come up with…

“Katherine’s power is growing very fast, and I can see the wild ambition which underlies that gorgeous face – I’m a little wary of it. Perhaps it’s time for me to place a restriction on her. In comparison, Alannys is docile and smart. Her power is growing at an even faster rate. I think I should prepare her for the next step, [Occult Scholar]; it won’t be difficult to sort it out with Kila Gails. A spirit medium can grow really quickly later and possess great power; there might even be a secret class transfer for spirit mediums!”

Thulhu frowned slightly. According to the parchment pieces, the next stage for [Spirit Medium] should be [Occult Scholar], and someone whose name was Kila Gails knew the secret. Somehow, the name sounded familiar to Thulhu.

He tried his best to recall where he had heard it, and he remembered.

Thulhu had seen the name Kila Gails on a book titled “A Study of Local Customs and Religions” in the university library, which had been published by Sunflower Press. Kila Gails was a well-known expert in the occult and also an explorer!

As Thulhu expected, Kila Gails was an extraordinary, who was also connected to the dead man in the sewers. The man had been confident that Kila would give him the secret to the occupation [Occult Scholar]. Thulhu thought to himself, perhaps they were members of the same secret group.

He became a little excited. It seemed that the [Spirit Medium] career path could go as far as rank three or four at least, and a future in it seemed promising. Thulhu felt that the occupation was quite neutral, as a spirit medium was more like a caster whose expertise was dealing with spirits.

Without doubt, this occupation came from the school of necromancy!

Thulhu had to concede that he now had a preference for [Spirit Medium].

He had the panel. Even if it later proved to be a poor decision, Thulhu could always start over!

As long as he had enough XP, he should be confident in himself.
